This is the oVirt project planning mailing list, project-planning at ovirt.org. The initial purpose of this list is the planning around a relaunch of the oVirt project as a KVM open virtualization umbrella project. Currently this list has these settings: * Private archives * Only list members can see who is subscribed * Subscriptions require administrator approval I propose we treat this list as if the archives will be publicly viewable in the future. The two list administrators are currently myself and Robyn Bergeron. I like to spread mailing list admin duties, and want to add a few more people as administrators, especially folks who are not @redhat.com. - Karsten -- name: Karsten 'quaid' Wade, Sr. Community Gardener team: Red Hat Community Architecture & Leadership uri: http://communityleadershipteam.org http://TheOpenSourceWay.org gpg: AD0E0C41 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <4E445CEC.7040406@redhat.com> Hi folks, I thought it would be a good idea to start cobbling together some open task items, and framing an agenda for meetings. I've put together a *very* light schedule below, along with a potential agenda. At this point, I think we need to start identifying the major milestones between now and the first release, and finding owners for the tasks that need to be done to hit those milestones on time. Once we have a better idea on the tasks, we'll have a clearer schedule. As previously suggested, I have put what is listed below on Google Docs. Please feel free to add in your suggestions / additions, particularly in the Open Tasks or Add Your Own Agenda Item areas - the more brains we have looking at this, the better :) (URL REDACTED - INFO: http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/project-planning/2011-September/000283.html) Incidentally, I'll be in Vancouver next week, Wednesday through Friday, for Linuxcon - if anyone would like to get together in a group and hack this into more of a schedule with firmer dates, let me know. :) -Robyn LIGHT SCHEDULE: o KVM Summit - August 15-16 o Website Launch - September o oVirt Workshop - October+ o Community Infrastructure - People - October - December o Community Infrastructure - Technology - Now - October/November o First release - January/February. Need to determine the major/minor milestones for each of the tasks listed above. Once we have an idea of what needs to be done, and when it needs to be done by, we can start building a more thorough schedule. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Meeting Agenda / Points of Discussion: 1) KVM Summit - August 15-16 * Meetings needed? 2) Website Launch * Needs owner. o A team needs to own this content refresh, including working with designers to get open, reusable content - key to ovirt.org belonging entirely to itself * Press release (other press coordination may be needed before/after launch) * Content for oVirt.org page: o What are the main messages. o What are the main outbound links. Suggestions include (new suggestions need someone to drive forward creation of content elsewhere): + Each sub-project with individual content, contribution info, etc. + Governance details. + New legal content. + Contribution policy - outbound == inbound, all contributions of any type (code, content, art, translations, etc.) must be under an acceptable license with necessary source materials. 3) oVirt Workshop / Summit - October+ * NEEDS AN OWNER. * Need to nail down likely dates, location. * Budget? What items need to be covered? Who is paying? * Potential invitees? 4) Community Infrastructure - People: Now - Dec. * Governance Details o Who is the owner for driving this? o Checklist of companies / partners / key contributors to reach out to, status o Writing up documentation of governance o Legal review? * Contribution Policies o Needs owner o Needs to be documented * Coordination with other support. o Legal - Who is helping with Legal issues, do we have a contact? o PR/Marketing - Who is helping with PR, do we have a contact? 5) Community Infrastructure - Technology: Now - Oct/Nov. * Mailing lists o Needs owner, dates. * Git repository o Needs owner, dates when needed. 6) First Community Release - January/February 2012 * Who is managing release? * Release criteria? * Testing/QA resources, Documentation, Translation, etc. - what is needed vs. NTH? 7) Other open tasks/topics * Taking ideas/suggestions, and volunteers. * Analyst briefings - yes/no, when, who? 8) Outreach Opportunities * Jim Jagielski: Transfer Summit, Isle of Open Source, ApacheCon. * List your speaking/travel here 9) Your Agenda Item Here -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I noticed "oVirt Sync meeting for those officially in the program (board)- Concall Wednesday 1:30 EST" is this supposed to be a weekly call? we really need something that works better for GMT+2 time zone. 1:30pm EST is 8:30pm for us 2.Bug tracker for ovirt.org - discussion for devel at . we are using the community --> ovirt project for this under redhat.bugzilla.com 3. Git hosting information since we use gerrit, which has an internal git repo, we need a gerrit instance more than we need git hosting (i.e., a public gerrit will also serve as git hosting). specifically, we'll probably want to use some of the gerrit hooks we have for better workflow / integration with mailing list. In line with oVirt being a fully stand-alone-from-one-corporate-entity project, it seemed to make sense to have $SomeBugTracker.ovirt.org as the upstream location. Since we'll need a general devel at ovirt.org for every sub-project developer to be on, that is the perfect location to discuss which bug tracker to use. (This is why it will be very important that we have resourcing figured out amongst all current and future community members so we can keep a strong infrastructure commons going. Expect to hear about that working group starting up ASAP.) > 3. Thanks for the reminder, Perry Myers put together a nice infrastructure list of must-haves that included gerrit, I forgot to make sure Robyn got those detailed out in the task list. - Karsten -- name: Karsten 'quaid' Wade, Sr. Community Gardener team: Red Hat Community Architecture & Leadership uri: http://communityleadershipteam.org http://TheOpenSourceWay.org gpg: AD0E0C41 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <4E4D7E95.3070108@redhat.com> Hi folks, It was great to meet those of you were were about yesterday evening for Carl's presentation. As I said yesterday - we have a number of "unowned" tasks on the shared document which need people to drive them, and I'm sure there are tasks not even listed yet. Part of a weekly phone call should be checking in on the progress of some of these tasks, particularly those which are time-sensitive as we move towards a launch date. Certainly not something that should take a large chunk of time in a phone call, but at least should be a time for people to raise flags if they have concerns about ability to deliver, or need help. If anyone is interested in gathering tomorrow (Friday, Aug 19) at Linuxcon, I'd be happy to get together either 1:1 or in a group to sort through some of the tasks/durations, if anyone is interested in defining more solid timelines/milestones for any of the tasks in the shared document, particularly if anyone wants to be an owner in driving something forward. (URL REDACTED - INFO: http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/project-planning/2011-September/000283.html) Feel free to respond on-list if you're interested, and if we have a few people who want to work on things, I'll see if I can find us a room tomorrow at some point to do so. Message-ID: <4E53DBF5.2040907@redhat.com> Hi folks, Hopefully most on this list received the invite for the weekly synchronization call that Carl sent out. (If not, let me know and I can forward it on to you.) I've put together a proposed agenda for the phone call below; with a 30m call each week, I think we can cover status on a lot of items, provided we make efficient use of the time. :) Since we're really still in start-up mode, I'd like to propose that we cover the big-ticket items and get ownership of things that need to be done in the next 1-2 months in each meeting, and leave longer-term tasks towards the bottom of the agenda (so people know that they're looking for owners, at least.) In my mind, those things are: * Status on initial project invites * Website launch * oVirt Workshop We can track minutes from each week in the shared document [1], and I'll volunteer to ship the minutes out to this list as well after each meeting. If you have other items you'd like to add to the agenda, or have other comments re: this mail, please speak up :) -Robyn [1] (URL REDACTED - INFO: http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/project-planning/2011-September/000283.html) Proposed Agenda: oVirt Sync Call Wednesdays, 17:30 UTC (1:30pm US Eastern, 10:30am US Pacific) == Intercall Conference == Toll Free Dial-In Number (US & Canada): (800) 451-8679 International Dial-In Number: (212) 729-5016 Other Toll-Free Dial-In Numbers: Listed in meeting invite Conference code: 9197544554 If you are not actively participating in the conversation please put your line on mute to make it easier for all participants to hear. *6 -- Mute your line #6 -- Unmute your line == Invitees/Attendees == project-planning at ovirt.org Attendee names go here. == Project Schedule == * Confirm initial project invites by September 14 * Website Launch - September * oVirt Workshop - week of (October 24th or November 14th) * Community startup @ workshop * Press release post-workshop * Community Infrastructure Tasks - People - October - December (need list) * Governance * How to get involved * Community Infrastructure Tasks - Technology - Now - October/November (need list) * Source code release * ?? * First release - January/February. == Working Shared Document == (URL REDACTED - INFO: http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/project-planning/2011-September/000283.html) == Agenda == 1) Board invites, status (Carl) 2) Website launch * Need owner * Content/scope? 3) oVirt Workshop / Summit * Needs owner * Needs dates, several under consideration. 4) Governance Docs (Carl) 5) Infrastructure * Other mailing lists * Source code release 6) Initial Code release 7) Your Agenda Item Here -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Yes, 9:30 am Eastern works better from here.. though it may be a little early for the left coast folks... Maybe 10:00 am or 10:30am would work better? 10:00am Eastern / 7:00am Pacific / 3:00pm England / 4:00pm Germany / 5:00pm Haifa,Tel Aviv / 10:00 pm Beijing or 10:30am Eastern / 7:30am Pacific / 3:30pm England / 4:30pm Germany / 5:30pm Haifa,Tel Aviv / 10:30 pm Beijing i'd have a slight preference for the 10:00 am Eastern time because of another call at 10:30, but we'll have folks with potential conflicts no matter when we try, so i'll figure something out about that.. doing the 1:30 pm Eastern, while maybe once or so I could make, but 1:30 am on regular basis would be tough! I do hope to get on something close to a semi-normal, if shortened sleeping schedule..! > > Carl. Jan to reach out and get contact info. * Do we have communication in place with folks at Early Adoption Level? * Mid-September will probably be the time to engage. Working on Board-level commitments first. * Action: Robyn to open separate document for user participation for the workshops, start building that list. Anyone can add to that. * Engagement / Speaking Opportunities: *End of September in Paris is Open World Forum. Jan and Karsten to possibly do briefings there. * Potential to use other speaking slots at OWF to promote oVirt Project, OVA, etc. * Action: Everyone, list speaking/engagement opportunities in the Google Doc, use times to advertise workshop. (Section 8) 4) Project Logistics * Please take a look at the google doc around mailing lists - where to do cross-project release coordination, etc.? * Subproject mailing lists? * Coordination list? (logistics, perhaps?) * Patches list, etc. * Review/feedback welcomed. * Perry - do we really need this for every project? Not really a need to have a private mailing list - some lists may be optional as needed. Anthony: should probably be decided by each community. Don't make it policy and let each project decide. * Decision: Yes, let's mark it as optional. * Jan: Is there a defined intellectual property policy? Carl: Apache style - this is my own work, etc., ASL or GPLv2 license. ASL is strong enough that we don't need anything else. Jan agrees. We need to put it up front. * Anthony: Would be helpful to have DSO as well as an option. * Action: Robyn to add section to document - have Legal, etc. provide feedback. * Karsten: Let's get it on the list, at least, to have a place to point to for Legal questions. * Action: Carl, Karsten, Jimjag working on first-pass of site content including governance. * Carl noted in Section about community, etc. that we need to note how governance works, committing, voting, how new subprojects work, releases and release management, subprojects and requirements. Need to add licensing. Any other topics that we want to explicity call out, please add it to the list. 5) Top Community Pages - Goal, Mission, etc. * 2 sites Carl likes - Eclipse.org, JBoss Project Matrix. 6) Logistics for Workshop * Action: Robyn to send mail about weeks that are options for the Workshop. Get feedback. * Will settle next week in this call. * Locations: Ask Intel - good hosting facilities. London, East Coast, West Coast. * What timezone is the best time zone to do it in? * Additional ideas on locations welcome for hosting. * # of expected people - location should be able to handle 60-100 people. * Linuxcon Europe is an option - October 26-28. * Make sense to combine with OVA meeting? * Looking for a Volunteer to work through location logistics. * Action: Karsten to lead this discussion. * High-level, bigger workshop vs. smaller, focused. * Initial is high-level, large invite to create lots of buzz. * Afterward run monthly etc. From jimjag at redhat.com Wed Aug 24 19:21:08 2011 From: jimjag at redhat.com (Jim Jagielski) Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2011 15:21:08 -0400 Subject: oVirt Sync Call Meeting Minutes :: 2011-08-24 In-Reply-To: <4E554D99.8060202@redhat.com> References: <4E554D99.8060202@redhat.com> Message-ID: Apologies for missing this one? trying to close the Apache httpd byte-range CVE? It's still very much taking shape. Since we don't have a wiki or other shared space at this point, it's about the best we can do for the moment. If you have information you'd like to add, please feel free to place it in the document; adding your name is helpful if you have questions or comments that you are putting in so we have context around who is asking. Carl, Karsten, and I have been working this document fairly actively, and everyone is welcome to join in and help. I suggest that people add who / where they can invite, and then put their name next to that, that they will invite. If you want to invite a group but are not the best person to do the invitation we can leave the second column bank so someone can volunteer. I believe we want to make the invatation to the workshop as broad as possible Then as Jon suggests we could use a 3rd column to indicate the geo concentration for that community. Thanks Carl. I've added myself and Alan Pevec (oVirt Node maintainer). I haven't talked to Alan about this, but depending on the location I'm sure he can come (and I'll talk with him about it to make sure) I also think it might be useful to have Dan Berrange come from the libvirt team. Actually - let's keep it at the same time (1:30pm eastern). I think there were some folks with conflicts at the 10am time, and we had a proposal to perhaps move it to Tuesdays at 10am, but we're already into Tuesday. Unless anyone has any objections, I think we should stick with the original plan - I'll send out an invite in about an hour unless I hear anyone yell otherwise. He's going to clean up and send to Karsten / Carl for feedback. * Karsten is working on getting up a wiki instance in a private space for us in the meantime, should be up in the next week. 5) oVirt Workshop / Summit (Karsten/Robyn) * Workshop participation - attendee list status (Robyn) * We still need names. PLEASE ADD THEM. * Please reach out to your teams internally or add their names proactively. * Action: If you were a touch point in inviting someone to the board who is NOT representing on the Workshop list - please reach out to them. * Location * Tentatively considering colocation with LinuxCon Europe. * WANT TO DECIDE BY END OF WEEK. * Action: Robyn to continue driving on list. * Action: Need to add companies we are in discussions with ((COMPANY NAME REDACTED - INFO: http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/project-planning/2011-September/000283.html), (COMPANY NAME REDACTED - INFO: http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/project-planning/2011-September/000283.html) for example) to invite list. * Non-Board invitees - Need to frame how to invite. * Pending updated slideset for non-board members. * Current Workshop Attendee / Invitee list: (URL REDACTED - INFO: http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/project-planning/2011-September/000283.html) 6) Governance Docs (Carl) * Carl out this week. 7) Infrastructure (Open Agenda item) * Need more discussion on google doc - Robyn to prod on mailing list. From kwade at redhat.com Wed Aug 31 19:15:34 2011 From: kwade at redhat.com (Karsten Wade) Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2011 12:15:34 -0700 Subject: what and why - oVirt positioning Message-ID: <20110831191534.GC26984@calliope.fairy-talefarm.com> There was a short and lively discussion on the phone today about why we are building an open virtualization community from the ground up. For example, people are being asked why we aren't putting this energy in to joining existing open-virt efforts. The problem with the latter discussion is it too easily gets in to comparing fresh oranges with dried bananas - that is, it appears to be a common discussion domain (fruit!), but the form, function, and contents are very different. In the end, if you are going to talk about fresh oranges, it doesn't make sense to bring up dried bananas. Bringing this discussion to the mailing list, this gives us a chance to work out our ideas in an open forum (that is, these archives will eventually be open to the public.) Thus a consensus here about why to do this project proves the point that this is an open leadership community from the outset. One theme that came up today I paraphrase here: We have very specific ideas about how to do things the open source way, learned from places such as Apache and Eclipse: * Involve key stakeholders from the beginning; * Require them to put a real stake down to be first-movers; * Make the community from the very outset openly constructed for shared control and management; * Show how to earn a seat at the board table; * Design and build leadership so consensus rolls up and down from sub-projects to a central governance body; * The community sets the project's direction by consensus from the outset. ... then condensing it: The only way to ensure a community is open and moving in the correct direction is to do it right from the start. There's no mistake in starting a new effort to accomplish those goals. ... another version: We're building an open virtualization project from the ground-up, involving key stakeholders as a start, and aggressively focusing on an open governance and project model. As we proceed, if our technology and community-style fit with all these other virtualization and cloud efforts, then integration will go more smoothly. Those are some ideas to start off. If the output is in fact very new, this is a very effective way to nurture innovation and determine viability for virtualization management.
