It isn't possible to use shell variables from within ovirt-shell
propmpt, but you can pass a command to it:

  # VAR=myvm
  # ovirt-shell --execute-command "show vm ${VAR}"

Or you can use here documents:

  # VAR=myvm
  # ovirt-shell <<.
  show vm ${VAR}
  .
