You can detach the relevant storage domain and attach it back to the relevant DC.
That functionality replaces the export domains.

You can also import a VM using an OVA file.

It’s not going to work from 3.5 to 4.3 directly
If you have an old setup with those VMs then just incrementally upgrade.
