You could upgrade your CPU firmware and get up-to-date packages, but what about the new CPU types for the guests?

There are no plans to backport the patch for them[1] to 4.0 (though I assume you could patch your own engine with it!).

I believe you most upgrade to 4.1 first, and then to 4.2.
