I have forgotten that you are doing it in debian. Maybe in case of debian the error can there for some other reason so I leave it for others to answer. But one more thing you can try is to decrease your swappiness value to 10. If you have enough ram then this will at least make your system freeze less.

I have an existing swap partition. I turned swap off and on again,
then attempted the build again. No luck.

Hmmm... I must say I'm not sure I use selinux. I use Debian; if I were
using a RHEL-based distro, then I think this would be the case.
