I believe you are partially right? Originally it was an OVA file. I uncompressed the file which gave me another file and the vm.ovf. The OVF file appears to be only an xml file? Or are you saying I can also uncompressed the ovf file as well like I did the OVA?

OVF file is just a tar archive with disks and XML descriptor. So untar the OVF
file should work.
