Might be

    gettext.bind_textdomain_codeset(domain[, codeset])

of help here to globally set the charset?
I'd like to solve this charset problem globally, and don't want to keep the burden on the individual developer to check whether the .encode() is needed or not. Just to prevent future bugs :)
