Only problem with that is spam. If you allow non-registered to post to lists in general w/o moderation, you inevitably end up with spam being sent to the list. Otherwise, I agree with you and it _would_ be much nicer to allow unregistered users to post Perry

Spam is annoying but qemu is open and isn't full w/ span. We can try opening up ovrit* and close it back to registered only if we'll get too many Viagra offers. I'm just glad to help some poor soles in Africa from time to time :)

LOL. Is there such a thing as 'too many Viagra offers' ?

I'm fine with opening up and then closing only if we get inundated. So +1 on your suggestion then.

Based on what I've seen so far to e.g. rsvp@ovirt.org (an open-to-any-poster list) and in the moderation queues, it will be nearly zero time until the spam starts. It's several pieces a day, each list, some days several multiples of that, and it seems to be growing in intensity. - - Karsten - -- name: Karsten 'quaid' Wade, Sr. Community Architect team: Red Hat Community Architecture & Leadership uri: http://communityleadershipteam.org http://TheOpenSourceWay.org gpg: AD0E0C41 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iD8DBQFOw9DD2ZIOBq0ODEERAvujAJ4w+xWy6THJ7kJ+dkXso++Mk+9y8gCfYO/C dXFT2riM8XLMjtEdswc0wrc= =BF6e -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

The consensus from the meeting today was to make a call for moderators and get the queues under control and flowing inbound non-spam to the lists. - From the setup-new-services perspective, we need a bit more time in Infrastructure to add new services to manage. We've grown really quickly, and we need to bring in more help, get everyone familiar with working together, and organize the processes before we add an entirely new service. - - Karsten - -- name: Karsten 'quaid' Wade, Sr. Community Architect team: Red Hat Community Architecture & Leadership uri: http://communityleadershipteam.org http://TheOpenSourceWay.org gpg: AD0E0C41 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iD8DBQFOw+Yw2ZIOBq0ODEERAoq/AJ9YWSpBC2Ha1soNlW27nkkns7vuMwCgv1Yn igdIo2LE5ZNJqI5qOGgDjyg= =yUj8 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

It's also annoying to register or wait for the moderator to authorize your request. Ignore me but think of someone random from qemu/libvirt/whatever that wants to report something or participate in a discussion. Filtering 3-5 spam emails a day is not much.

same here.
IMHO a new project should be friendlier to the community than for its maintainers. The kernel, qemu, kvm, xen and more manage to handle the spam alright.

I have same issue w/ mailman lists @linuxfoundation. I have them closed and moderate unsubscribed posters. The sender is not informed that they are being moderated, and I always add the sender to the whitelist as part of accepting the email. I don't ever get complaints for this setup. thanks, -chris

Hi all, The issue of list moderation, particularly moderation of posts from unsubscribed users (usually their first post) vs spam, was raised at today's meeting. For now we have agreed that we should continue with the status quo whereby posts from unsubscribed users require moderation, as always there is a 'but' though. We need more moderators! The task is not too onerous at this time but ideally we'd like a few moderators for each list to ensure that any posts awaiting moderation are always processed in a timely manner. If you'd like to nominate yourself as a volunteer please just respond to this message, include the @ovirt.org list(s) you'd be happy to moderate in your message.
