Both /home/mburns and /home/mburns/.ssh had incorrect directory permissions. Mike had just run an rsync operation, which worked, and then he couldn't ssh in. Perhaps something in rsync changed the directory permissions? Or the rsync was run from a higher level than you are used to, and it synced over your localhost directory permissions?
