+1 - not sure it should replace the mailing list.
Typically:
Users prefer to ask questions and browser on a forum, look through old answers, etc.
Developers tend to work on mailing lists, asking a developer to go looking for questions
to answer in a forum won't work.
Forum sounds great only if we can get it bridged to a mailing list
