I'll take this as an opportunity to ask some questions:
if and under what circumstances can the "default" DC
be safely removed if you do not use it?
Or can't you delete it, would it break something (what)?
Why is there a "default" DC in the first place?

Default is always created. Normal setups start with just it, and others can be created if
needed.
local_datacenter is all-in-one-specific - you were asked about it during setup - name,
location etc.
It's "local" in that it uses a local directory on the host, so VMs on it
cannot be migrated to other
hosts if/when you add them.
