We don't have anymore an all-in-one installation where the engine and vdsm runs altogether in the same machine; the proposed replacement is hosted-engine which doesn't work with local storage since it's supposed to be able to restart the engine VM somewhere else for HA reasons and the local storage is against that by definition. If you have three machines I'd suggest an hyperconverged gluster deployment with replica 3.
