ovirt-engine-3.6.6.2 over centos 3.10.0-327.18.2.el7.x86_64 and
periodically updates the kernel.

Yes, it was about
kpatch, but you're right, kpatch must be manually
applied from a diff source kernel, and is not applied by default.
