Have you used the below format in the .netrc?
machine
esx.example.com login root password s3cr3t
Additionally, have you set 0600 as permission to .netrc?
chmod 600 ~/.netrc
The new version of virt-v2v does not use '.netrc' at all. Instead
there is a '--password-file' option. Best to read the manual page:
