well, I can't find anything special within the httpd logs. Only ssl_error_log shows
some, but there is no relation to the connection tries.

You can try restarting the engine (service ovirt-engine restart).
If it doesn't work, please check/post:
/etc/httpd/conf.d/z-ovirt-engine-reports-proxy.conf
