In order to be easier to read, you can rotate the log before starting the engine.Should be
something like:
hosted-engine --set-maintenance --mode=global && logrotate -f
/etc/vdsm/logrotate/vdsm && hosted-engine -- vm-start

I'd suggest to check in /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log why it failed to start.
