oVirt project was initiated from virtual desktop project. It supported an open desktop protocol SPICE from the beginning which gave a nice 2D performance driven by the various graphics drivers on different OSs. Do you have a target in mind? Like what is ratio of virtual desktops per physical servers? Does the virtual desktop support support video playback?
