Spice is certainly not a simple protocol, and while not as good as RDP on WAN, it can run pretty well - provided you have the QXL drivers installed on the guest. Y.

Out of curiosity, did you try to use spice? I assume your VM is running windows OS, based on the mentioning of RDP?
