[Users] 3.2 final and status of spice console in ie

Hello, what is the status of support for spice console with ie9 (32bit on win7 32bit in my case) and 3.2 final? I have a windows xp vm but when I try to login to console from win7+ie9 I don't get any activex request to install.... ie exact version: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvVHZhYnczY3lKaTA/edit?usp=sharing If after a few minutes I click again on console button I get Error: A Request to the Server failed with the following Status Code: 400 Tried with both admin and user portal. Thanks, Gianluca

as soon as http://wiki.ovirt.org web site returns available I'm going to check. Right now it seems remaining in waiting state... (it's about half an hour...) Gianluca

No, never seen that page, thanks! I see some things to do engine side too, that I didn't find before... I'm going to test ad report BTW: still now overall www.ovirt.org is down at my side (Italy: I seem to be on fastweb Italy network right now): it remains in waiting for.... While other websites are accessible without any problem. Possibly a fastweb italy connectivity problem towards that domain... Gianluca

Ok, I was able to install and run the spice plugin on my system with WIndows 7 (64bit) and Internet Explorer 9 It seems from first tests that it works quite well (tested only with Windows XP VM right now) I took the time to change two small things on the wiki page: - WEB_INF --> WEB-INF - Changed the note regarding spice servlet this way: NOTE the file web.xml is part of ovirt-engine-backend rpm; in oVirt 3.2 the <servlet> definition for SpiceX.cab is already in place Also, inside the section regarding portals I noticed that the file /usr/share/ovirt-engine/engine.ear/root.war/index.html is different from what written into the wiki... I didn't change it yet, in case you want to retain some sort of 3.1 compatibility... In case let me know and I'll update that too. Some notes regarding installation - added link to spice page in portals main page - click on it - click on button "install spice" - accept activeX install apparently at this point nothing happened.. I waited a couple of minutes.. no virtviewer entry in allprograms section Then I tried to open a spice console and again I got the message regarding the plugin, accept and then got the install window So now I can click again on spice console button of the vm and spice console fires up... I'm going to try with another windows 7 (32bit) system and document better... Note: I also got the " Error: A Request to the Server failed with the following Status Code: 400" window; probably due to the first spice console access that implied true installation of plugin... I'd go ahead and change it, no need to keep obsolete information

Yeah, the download may take quite some time and there's no feedback. Well,I hope people will eventualy give up on IE;) The xpi plugin, MIME file, and HTML5 client would replace ActiveX in the future well enough Thanks, michal

I will be the first ;-) (Even if I have to admit that the rendering of the Webadmin GUI in IE9 and WIndows 7 is far the best one compared with Firefox and Chrome, at this time with 3.2 final. give the devil (his due) ....)

One question about the rendering of the proposed spice.html page in the wiki. At the end of the two "manual install" sections and before the uninstall one there is a code that should propose a button (?) or something to manual install <p>1) Right-Click "Spice Remote-Viewer Client/ActiveX Plugin" and choose "save target as"</p> ... 8) Click the close button once it is done to complete the install 9) The Spice Remote-Viewer Client/ActiveX Plugin is now installed and you will be able to view the consoles of your vm's in the User/Admin portals. here a script section that seems not to be rendered, its code is:
---< <script type="text/JavaScript"> getHttpHref("spice/virt-viewer-0.5.3.exe","Spice Remote-Viewer Client/ActiveX Plugin"); </script> <a name="manual-uninstall1"></a> ---<
Windows XP (x86)/Server 2003/R2 (x86/x64) Uninstall Instructions: 1) *Important* Close all open Internet Explorer windows/sessions! ... But actually I don't see anything between point 9) and the line with Windows XP (x86)/Server 2003/R2 (x86/x64) Uninstall Instructions: Is there anything wrong with the snippet code? I don't understand what should appear in the rendering that I'm able to right-click to manual install.... Tried both in firefox and in IE and nothing appears as a consequence of this javascript code... If I directly go to https://tekkaman.localdomain.local/spice/virt-viewer-0.5.3.exe I get the prompt to download/install the exe, so I think I correctly put my files... Thanks Gianluca

Hello everybody, I have been able to install in my Debian box Iceweasel browser the spice-xpi plugin and I can see consoles from admin portal and User portal. When I go to a Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bits client and open oVirt User Portal login and I can see my Fedora linux 17 VM and my Windows 7 Enterprise 32bits VM in the portal but when I click in the console remote-viewer open with a black screen about two seconds and it closes and the VM doesn't shows. I have tested two versions of virt-viewer, x86 and x64, downloaded from http://spice-space.org/download.html but I can't see my VMs. I have followed the how-to: http://wiki.ovirt.org/How_to_Connect_to_SPICE_Console_With_Portal but nothing happens. I have been to install virt-viewer but VM doesn't show in the console. The Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bits client has IE v.10 and I also have done a downgrade to IE v.9.0 but it doesn't work. Can somebody give me guidance about this problem? Many thanks in avanced, Juanjo. On Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 8:27 AM, Karli Sjöberg <Karli.Sjoberg@slu.se> wrote:

Also, inside the section regarding portals I noticed that the file /usr/share/ovirt-engine/engine.ear/root.war/index.html
is different from what written into the wiki... I didn't change it yet, in case you want to retain some sort of 3.1 compatibility... In case let me know and I'll update that too. I'd go ahead and change it, no need to keep obsolete information
Ok, done.
One question about the rendering of the proposed spice.html page in the wiki. At the end of the two "manual install" sections and before the uninstall one there is a code that should propose a button (?) or something to manual install
<p>1) Right-Click "Spice Remote-Viewer Client/ActiveX Plugin" and choose "save target as"</p> ... 8) Click the close button once it is done to complete the install
9) The Spice Remote-Viewer Client/ActiveX Plugin is now installed and you will be able to view the consoles of your vm's in the User/Admin portals. here a script section that seems not to be rendered, its code is:
---< <script type="text/JavaScript"> getHttpHref("spice/virt-viewer-0.5.3.exe","Spice Remote-Viewer Client/ActiveX Plugin"); </script> <a name="manual-uninstall1"></a> ---<
Windows XP (x86)/Server 2003/R2 (x86/x64) Uninstall Instructions:
1) *Important* Close all open Internet Explorer windows/sessions! ...
But actually I don't see anything between point 9) and the line with
Windows XP (x86)/Server 2003/R2 (x86/x64) Uninstall Instructions:
Is there anything wrong with the snippet code? I don't understand what should appear in the rendering that I'm able to right-click to manual install....
It´s just a button that you click to install remote-viewer. Can´t say why it´s not working for you, but I´ve followed the guide to set up the portal and everything works as expected to install Spice with oVirt-3.1. A co-worker of mine was able to, by himself, figure out how to do it, without me even knowing it; he said that the process was very logical, straight-forward and well presented, so big kudos to DHC for that!
Something that still bothers me in Windows/IE though, is that you are able to get a working console through webadmin, but not the userportal.
/Karli
Tried both in firefox and in IE and nothing appears as a consequence of this javascript code... If I directly go to https://tekkaman.localdomain.local/spice/virt-viewer-0.5.3.exe
I get the prompt to download/install the exe, so I think I correctly put my files...

Hello Karli, I'm working with a oVirt version 3.1, but I have read that Gianluca have been able to do this console works. Anybody can help us providing some guidance? Many thanks in avanced, Juanjo. On Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 2:36 PM, Karli Sjöberg <Karli.Sjoberg@slu.se> wrote:

Hello everybody,
I have been able to install in my Debian box Iceweasel browser the spice-xpi plugin and I can see consoles from admin portal and User portal.
Exactly what I´m experiencing as well! I´m not alone:) What version of oVirt are you running, 3.1, or 3.2?
/Karli
I have tested two versions of virt-viewer, x86 and x64, downloaded from http://spice-space.org/download.html but I can't see my VMs.
I have followed the how-to: http://wiki.ovirt.org/How_to_Connect_to_SPICE_Console_With_Portal but nothing happens. I have been to install virt-viewer but VM doesn't show in the console. The Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bits client has IE v.10 and I also have done a downgrade to IE v.9.0 but it doesn't work.
Can somebody give me guidance about this problem?
Many thanks in avanced,
Juanjo.

I've never gotten it to work in IE (3.1 or 3.2) but haven't put lots of effort into finding out why. I get the exact same results (client for a couple of seconds). I believe it's always been with IE 9 and Windows 7/64.

Many thanks, But to me one question arise, with a Windows clients, XP or 7, any version, it's possible to use the User Portal to be able users lauch the VM console?, or it's mandatory to have Fedora clients with spice-xpi for firefox. On the other hand, if Spice consoles in windows clients can't be used for oVirt 3.1, is It possible open VM consoles from Windows clients with VNC? and in affirmative case, is there some how-to similar to Spice how-to? Many thanks in avanced, Juanjo. On Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 8:39 PM, Jeff Bailey <bailey@cs.kent.edu> wrote:

1. there are wiki's on how to add spice windows support to ovirt: http://wiki.ovirt.org/wiki/How_to_Connect_to_SPICE_Console_With_Portal 2. there are patches for various solutions to this coming (mime based launched, spice.html5, novnc, maybe spice-xpi for firefox windows) HTH, Itamar

Hello Itamar and everybody, I have tested this Howto with a Windows 7 Enterprise edition client and IE 9 and when you click over console button in User portal virt-viewer is launched but after one second it close windows and don't connect to virtual machine. I have oVirt 3.1 and I'm thinking in migrate my system to oVirt 3.2 but it will be nice to know which it is the reason because it doesn't work. Some indications about what would be the problem will be wellcome. If it is necessary some log I can provide it. Many thanks, Juanjo. hard to help without logs (spice client to begin with). will be easier helping/patching you on 3.2 of course.
Many thanks,

Hmm, that does indeed seem to fix it. I added the engine URL to the trusted sites zone and unchecked the "Require server verification" box and now I get a connected spice client. Thanks !

This is exactly the same thing I get. 3.2 doesn't help. The spicex log says that it can't connect to the spice client pipe. This is with both the admin portal and the user portal.
If it is necessary some log I can provide it.
Many thanks,

1. there are wiki's on how to add spice windows support to ovirt: http://wiki.ovirt.org/wiki/How_to_Connect_to_SPICE_Console_With_Portal
2. there are patches for various solutions to this coming (mime based launched, spice.html5, novnc, maybe spice-xpi for firefox windows)

This is exactly the same thing I get. 3.2 doesn't help. The spicex log says that it can't connect to the spice client pipe. This is with both the admin portal and the user portal.

If it is necessary some log I can provide it.

I was referring to the log file named "spicex" related to the activex plugin. Adding the engine url to the IE trusted zone fixed my problem though.

Heh, heh, maybe it's a secret. :) Actually, I believe I got it from http://elmarco.fedorapeople.org/spice.cab and it seems to be version 5.0.2.2.

Ja, Ja, of course not, I have had a power failure in my test installation and I have lost all my VMs and now I have already sent a mail to this list to ask if it is possible to have some workaround about that because I'm in a kind of loop. I can't Activate my Master domain storage because it is empty and my Default Data Center can't be enable. In the other hand I have in my Admin portal some Templates and VMs that they don't exist and I can't delete because I need Data Center on-line. I guess that I will have to clean DB o something like that. I'm waiting if some king of workaround to this issue exists. If you now how to manage this I will be happy to listen you, sorry, read you. As already pointed in another mail of this same thread from Michal Skrivanek (about a month ago), the info is at http://wiki.ovirt.org/How_to_Connect_to_SPICE_Console_With_Portal and the page indeed contains the same link to spice.cab file you are referring so possibly difficult to find but not a secret... ;-) Gianluca

I've described the debugging steps on this list in the past, please look them up and go through spicex.log. If that isn't sufficient, please use debug-helper.exe (IIRC I described it in another mail here) to get remote-viewer debug output. HTH, David

Hello David, My problem was that I needed to add my host to \windows\system32\driver\etc\hosts file moreover to have virt-viewer installed in the Windows 7 client. Now I can open the console after that. Many thanks, Juanjo. On Mon, Apr 8, 2013 at 4:23 PM, David Jaša <djasa@redhat.com> wrote:
