Local disk RAID best practices (HW vs SW RAID)

Hello, I’m RAIDing the local hypervisor disks. I’m aware that in some scenarios this isn’t even needed. But I would like to know which is the best practice in this scenario: Hardware RAID from a cheap Dell H330 controller, or just leave the controller in HBA mode and make a software RAID during install of the Hypervisor? Thanks, Sent from my iPhone

Normal best practice is to use the storage's RAID. Not saying there aren't cases for when you'd want to create a RAID on virtual disks, but performance usually wouldn't be one of the reasons. You'll get better features usually from the HW RAID with regards to failure detection and automatic rebuild. Now...after setting storage up using your storage solution's RAID, anything on top of that is totally up to you. With that said, I've never used the H330 RAID controller.
