Planning and upgrade from 3.6.8 to 4.0.6:
4.0.6 mentions supporting CentOS 7.3 and qemu-kvm-ev 2.6
Is it possible in a 3.6.7 environment to upgrade all the hosts first to
CentOS 7.3, vdsm 4.18, and qemu-kvm-ev 2.6 before tackling the engine? In
other words, is the 4.0.6 host stack compatible with a 3.6.7 engine?

It may work, but we don't support 3.6 for a while and I'm not sure what
issues you may encounter.
It is safer to upgrade the engine first and the hosts later. 4.0 supports
3.6 compatibility, just make sure all cluster are 3.6 with el7 prior to
updating.

Just to be 100% sure, on the hosts we upgrade to 7.3 first and then to 4.0?
Or can i add the 4.0 repo and update everything together?
You run yum update for everything together.
For the engine it is quite clear now and makes sense I guess. New CentOS
requires oVirt 4, so we should upgrade to it first.

It is safer to upgrade the engine first and the hosts later. 4.0 supports
3.6 compatibility, just make sure all cluster are 3.6 with el7 prior to
updating.

ovirt-4.0.repo:

ovirt-4.0-dependencies.repo:
B. http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/virt/$basearch/ovirt-4.0/
For auditing purposes, is the following understanding correct?
a. B is a subset of A (meant only for host/node)
b. B RPMs are identical with A RPMs except signed with a different key.
c. A default installation (i.e. don't edit *.repo files) will pull RPMs
from ovirt rather than centos.

I would do this way
yum clean all
modify your repo fies in /etc/yum.repos.d
- verify CentOS-CR is disabled
- at least in
CentOS-Base.repo
where you don't have "enabled=0" (so both where there is no enabled=.. line
and where enabled=1)
comment mirrorlist and uncomment baseurl
in baseurl line substitute the word
$releasever
with
7.2.1511
try a yum update and verify that no 7.3 packages come in.
The problem is that epel repo don't track minor versions, so that if you
have an update in epel that requires a 7.3 package you would get dependency
error.
or you can disable also epel in the mean time if this is the case....

This is very risky and untested, expect issues and throughly test. VSDM
should be updated with all the other packages.

Well, I remember that ovirt-engine uses some yum plugin to lock pkgs
versions. And i found this plugin - *yum-plugin-versionlock.* I will try
it to lock vdsm version.
