correct me if I am wrong:
1. Uninstall 3.0
2. engine-cleanup do not drop database
3. Reinstall
Good to go right? Will this mess with vm's already running etc.

this will break things badly.
The un-test but the way that should work is.
Uninstall oVirt 3.0 do not engine-clean
Upgrade from Fedora 16 to Fedora 17.
Add the beta repo's
yum clean all
Yum install ovirt-engine
Run enginue-upgrade and follow it instructions
Since I was stuck at the DMV all day I haven't had a change to test
these instructions at all before doing these steps I would do a full
backup of the DB and a snapshot of the system. If you can clone the
system and do these steps on a clone even better.

Has anyone else tested this? I just tried it on a test rig of F16
running 3.0, upgrading to 3.1 beta on F17. All the steps completed fine,
except that I had to remove ovirt-engine-jbossas, which conflicted with
the new, from Fedora, jboss-as, before installing ovirt-engine 3.1.
After engine-upgrade completed, I wasn't able to access the engine.
Jboss-as was stopped, as was httpd. Starting them up didn't make the
engine accessible, though. I just got the default fedora pages for JBoss
and for Apache.
On my own oVirt setup, I moved from 3.0 to 3.1 by moving my VMs and
templates to my export domain, detaching my export and iso domains, and
installing 3.1 from scratch, before importing my iso and export domains
and ferrying my VMs and templates over to my new data domain.
What's the most sane upgrade advice we can offer to oVirt 3.0 users?

I'm afraid this won't work, we changed so many things in the packaging/setup
between 3.0 and 3.1

Can someone please try this out and verify it works? I'd like to include this process
in the release notes.
I've been testing this path today. I get all the way to step 5, running
engine-setup, and the script fails out after asking for my existing db
password. The script asks for my password, over and over (I tried
entering it like 25 times) and keeps on asking until I hit enter with a
blank password a couple of times, at which point it fails out.

See the migration instructions at the bottom of the relese notes. Basically you shut down
all of your VMs, export them to your export domain. Now all you have to do is preserve
that export domain storage. Everything else should be blown away and rebuilt as a
completely new install. Then you import that storage domain you saved and restore the
VM's. It worked just fine for me.

oVirt Nodes can run without a Manager being present and all Guest will
stay Up and running. What if, Taking the whole environment off line,
is not an option...
- From a DR point of view, oVirt needs a Backup solution to backup the
Manager, and more importantly a Restore Option that would mean you can
bring an oVirt Manager Back online without the whole lot being off-line.

TOP POSTING, as I got this question number of times:
oVirt 3.0 was the first release of the oVirt project.
It was based on Fedora16, and a special JBoss package (ovirt-engine-jbossas) which we
created as a temporary solution until JBoss will get into Fedora.
3.1 is Fedora 17 based, and supports the official JBoss.
Due to those huge changes (packaging wise mainly), our upgrade path is non-trivial.
Actually, even if we didn't have the (huge) packaging changes, 3.0 to 3.1 upgrade
would require a big amount of downtime, due to the need to upgrade you base OS (Fedora 16
to 17).
As we mentioned in the release notes, we have two options to do the upgrade:
1. RECOMMENDED - Export all templates ans vms and import them into a new setup
- Downtime depends on the total size of VMs + Templates
2. NOT RECOMMENDED - Follow http://wiki.ovirt.org/wiki/OVirt_3.0_to_3.1_upgrade
- Downtime depends on the F16 -> 17 upgrade + few manual steps
I understand both flows are not perfect, but we had to do those changes.
As a result, future upgrades should be much faster.
