Making list members-only for posting

Hi everyone, This is transparent to board members, but for some reason board@ovirt.org, more than any other mailing list, gets a huge amount of spam which generates approval emails to list owners. Given the nature of the list, I would like to propose changing the list to members posting only - membership of the list will still be open to community members, but all email from non-members will be silently dropped rather than put into moderation. Is this acceptable to everyone? Thanks, Dave. -- Dave Neary - Community Action and Impact Open Source and Standards, Red Hat - http://community.redhat.com Ph: +33 9 50 71 55 62 / Cell: +33 6 77 01 92 13

Or, to ask the question differently, is this unacceptable to anyone? Thanks, Dave. -- Dave Neary - Community Action and Impact Open Source and Standards, Red Hat - http://community.redhat.com Ph: +33 9 50 71 55 62 / Cell: +33 6 77 01 92 13

History-wise, the reason we didn't do this in the past was to allow non-board members to send comments/questions to the board mailing list. I know meeting minutes also come to the list. I don't disagree with the move, but did want to mention the background. Mike

Is it maybe possible to allow other @ovirt.org subscribers to post? This way you'd get something in between which IMHO may work pretty well… Thanks, michal

I think it's a nice idea, not sure how easy to implement though.
Thanks, michal

would it be too bad (spam wise) if we reject the emails with reason, rather than drop them?

Rejecting the emails would be the equivalent of creating a DDOS on the mail server - you're confirming to the spam bot that it's a valid email address by sending a reply.
