oVirt 4.6 OS versions

Has it yet been decided which OS and version will be used for the oVirt 4.6 Hosted Engine and for 4.6 oVirt Node?

As far as I can tell, no. There was a discussion about rebasing on CentOS Stream 10 or on Fedora in this list, but I haven't seen any patch related to that or any proposal to vote for one of them within the community. -- Sandro Bonazzola MANAGER, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System Red Hat EMEA <https://www.redhat.com/> <https://www.redhat.com/> *Red Hat respects your work life balance. I have a problem with CentOS stream. The purpose of Redhat and clone is to have good hardware and software support. Vendors will provide tools and driver to know OS versions. I’m afraid that in case of problems with Stream release, I will be on my own, with unexpected broken node in case of kernel regression in an hardware driver.

Then pay for redhat? I really don't understand this. You want a free OS with a team of people behind that help you within x hours if you have an issue, but you don't want to pay for it. Either pay, or use centos stream and report the issues/debug them yourselves. On 12/12/2023 11:29, Fabrice Bacchella wrote:

Whatever it’s Redhat or a clone, the situation is the same, Stream is a risky path, independently of the reliability of the OS by itself.

As oVirt is no longer a RHV-Next upstream, I don't see a reason for trying to convince the community to keep using CentOS Stream as the chosen OS for 4.6 development. As a community, you all can suggest which OS you'd like to have in your datacenter, gather consensus about it and change oVirt as it best fits to the winning OS. We have had positive experience with Rocky Linux 9. We run RL9 for most of our VMs under oVirt 4.4. We also run RL9 on some of our stand-alone HP Gen8 servers. We are also currently running oVirt 4.4 on HP Gen8 servers and will probably run oVirt 4.6 on HP Gen8 servers. So, my vote is for Rocky Linux 9 as a base for oVirt 4.6 .?! --- On 12/12/2023 6:22 AM, Sandro Bonazzola wrote:

We are running Redhat familly on HPE hardware for ages, and everything was always fine. But they plan to remove hpsa drivers I think in later release, see https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/9/htm...

I would like to add +1 for Rocky. I believe it's a strong contender for long term stability and cooperation. Pat. On 2023-12-12 17:41, d03@bornfree.org wrote:
We have had positive experience with Rocky Linux 9. We run RL9 for most of our VMs under oVirt 4.4. We also run RL9 on some of our stand-alone HP Gen8 servers. We are also currently running oVirt 4.4 on HP Gen8 servers and will probably run oVirt 4.6 on HP Gen8 servers.
So, my vote is for Rocky Linux 9 as a base for oVirt 4.6 .?!

The ONLY was Rocky Linux 9 will be supported is by somebody doing a complete check of everything (ovirt-engine, vdsm, etc), and makes it compatible with RL9 and get all the changes/fixes merges. Supporting RL9 does also not mean we cannot support any other distro next to it. For example CentOS Steam 9/10 and RL9 would be great. But this will need effort from the community, otherwise you can give as many +1's as you want, things won't change. Thanks On 13/12/2023 14:53, Patrick Dubois via Users wrote:

Hi all! Just to sweeten the conversation... We're running Virt 4.5.5 on CentOS Stream 9 and everything works wonderfully. I tested the Engine and host installation using RL9 and it also worked. Here we used several Supermicros, HPE DL560 Gen10, Gigabyte CL2200 Gen10, Dell R930, and they were all compatible. We also use LSI SAS 3, PERC and other RAID controllers... all of them compatible with Stream 9. Of course, if you have much older hardware, there will be compatibility issues, that's normal. It's the hardware life cycle, just like it works with smartphones and video games. Doesn't a vote for "support Rocky 9" basically mean "continue supporting RHEL 9 and derivatives"? So effecitvely no change from 4.5 except for potentially dropping EL8. On Wed, 13 Dec 2023, Jean-Louis Dupond via Users wrote:

I also agree... I believe that, in addition to the location of the binaries (which is different for other distributions), I think another problem is going to a distribution that does not support NetworkManager. I confess that I've never been a fan of SUSE, but it's worth staying up to date with SUSE Liberty Linux... https://www.suse.com/products/suse-liberty-linux/ https://www.suse.com/c/suse-liberty-linux/ Em qui., 14 de dez. de 2023 às 18:53, Sketch <ovirt@rednsx.org> escreveu:

Another +1 - We've been using Rocky (8) for a few years now and its been great. (Yes, we're prep-ing to update to RL9 at the moment, but we've had a "minor" iSCSI connectivity issue just raise its ugly head so we're dealing with that right now :-( ) And for the record: My personal ambition is to contribute to oVirt as soon as I can "clear the decks" with some other stuff first, for what its worth. :-)
