I don't think that it's related to the engine.
I've never seen it on any ovirt setup that I have.

Anyway, you can try running:
lsof -c ovirt | wc -l

In order to see how many open files ovirt is using.

Changing the limits of the OS shouldn't cause any bad behaviour.
You can read a little bit about it - there is a soft limit and a hard limit.
