You can use a text editor's help to avoid this stuff.
For example, in Sublime Text, I have set:
"translate_tabs_to_spaces": true,
"trim_trailing_white_space_on_save": true
Now pressing "Tab" will write out 4 spaces, and trailing spaces are
deleted on save.
