Yeah I have edited isoinfo.py and the patch is in one of these emails. It
has been tested and works on my kimchi fork. However I could not find any
code for identifying or setting the distro of an image file (not iso but an
virtual hard disk file).

Alan, the code responsible to identify the distro and version is the
isoinfo.py and we can test your patch using the following command:
$ PYTHONPATH=<path_to_your>/kimchi/src/ python isoinfo.py
${HOME}/Downloads/debian-7.8.0-amd64-netinst.iso
