Because if you're not just updating rpms, the direct upgrade process from 3.1 to 3.3
through engine-setup is not supported.
In this case you should upgrade to 3.2 before upgrading to 3.3.

Should be a simple fix, but where does it get JAVA_HOME from? Setting it in the running
shell doesn’t work. (export JAVA_HOME, etc.) Also wondering
why it can’t find it if the engine is currently working…
