[Users] Problems with first time oVirt installation

Hi all - trying to evaluate ovirt and having real problems with getting a self contained install running. I've followed the Quickstart guide at: http://www.ovirt.org/Download word for word using a fresh CentOS 6.4 install with all updates applied on a Intel based PC with 8GB Ram and two nics. It seems to all go well but when I get into the web interface, none of the storage is initially visible, neither the ISO_DOMAIN nor the local storage. Oddly if I refresh the browser (firefox & chrome) while on the storage page the ISO_DOMAIN appears but can't be attached to a datacenter - "None Available" If I go into the host page the host is there but not finished configuring. The network setup is unfinished, the management interface is not attached to a NIC. If I attach it to the active nic (NIC 0) it throws an exception on Save. I can attach it to nic 1 but its not actually hooked up to anything. I have successfully installed and run proxmox on this pc, so don;t think there are hardware problems. On a related note - I've also been trying to test ovirt at home, which means running it on KVM (setup with virt-manager). CentOS installs fine but on reboot just goes to a black screen with the hour glass. If anyone has suggestions on how to get past that it would help my test config a lot :) Host machine is Kubuntu 13.10. Thanks, -- Lindsay

i don't remember them of the top of my head, but you can run the engine-log-collector and it will collec them for you. sandro - any wiki on troubleshooting/log locations?

I ran that, large number of logs collected - any ones in particualr you want to see? the sos.log consists of this: 2013-11-15 13:49:51,373 INFO: could not run command: /usr/bin/systool -v -c -b scsi 2013-11-15 13:49:53,699 INFO: error copying file /sys/bus/scsi/uevent (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:53,701 INFO: error copying file /sys/bus/scsi/drivers/sr/uevent (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:53,701 INFO: error copying file /sys/bus/scsi/drivers/sr/unbind (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:53,702 INFO: error copying file /sys/bus/scsi/drivers/sr/bind (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:53,702 INFO: error copying file /sys/bus/scsi/drivers_probe (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:54,113 INFO: could not run command: /usr/bin/cpufreq-info 2013-11-15 13:49:55,203 INFO: could not run command: /usr/bin/systool -c fc_host -v 2013-11-15 13:49:55,203 INFO: could not run command: /usr/bin/systool -c scsi_host -v 2013-11-15 13:49:55,215 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/ipmi_si/parameters/hotmod (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,232 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/md_mod/parameters/new_array (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,239 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/libfcoe/parameters/disable (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,239 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/libfcoe/parameters/enable (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,240 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/libfcoe/parameters/destroy (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,240 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/libfcoe/parameters/create_vn2vn (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,240 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/libfcoe/parameters/create (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,241 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/fcoe/parameters/disable (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,241 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/fcoe/parameters/enable (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,241 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/fcoe/parameters/destroy (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:55,241 INFO: error copying file /sys/module/fcoe/parameters/create (IOError) 2013-11-15 13:49:56,085 INFO: could not run command: /usr/sbin/dkms status NB:This was run in a XenServer VM so Host virtulisation and the all-in-one plugine weren't possible. oh, was nested virt enabled? this is an all in one deployment, right? it needs VT extensions to work. you pasted the errors of the sos.log, not the content of the zip

I've been testing in a mix of environments between home and work :) My oriignaltest was with real hardware but thats not available right now. This latest was on XenServer, so I don't think kvm can run nested on that. I was just trying the management interface out - I presumed the storage etc could be setup without a hostnode attached. I'd do nested virt at home, CentOS installs via virt-manager fine, but just displays a black screen on startup. thanks, -- Lindsay

you can install the engine as a VM, but the download describes deploying the all-in-one plugin - that deployes engine+vdsm(host) on same box.

that's a centos/ubuntu issue - sorry i can't help with that. if you want to easily play with it for a demo, may i suggest you try to boot from the live-usb? http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Live
thanks,

Yah, the plug was disabled as no kvm available. I thought the all-in-one was optional for that guide?

The all-in-one is optional in the sense that you need to run sudo yum install -y ovirt-engine-setup-plugin-allinone only if you want an all-in-one setup (aka one engine that is also the hypervisor) Normally when you deploy a host there is the reboot of the host itself at the end of the stage In case of all-in-one this would be a problem.of course So the engine-setup after you install all-in-one plugin would take care itself to make as normally the engine configuration and setup, but also the deploy part of itself as a host, without reboot (there was a bug in the past hitting me on this... ;-) see also here for further information about all-in-one: http://www.ovirt.org/Feature/AllInOne HiH, Gianluca

actually, in 3.3 there is no longer a reboot at host install. still, the AIO automatically defines the DC as local-host type, auto configures the host and a data storage domain, etc.
