Agentless backup solutions

What backup solutions are people using? I'm only interested in host-level backups (no agents in the vm's) I am aware of the following products: https://storware.eu/en/storware-vprotect/ https://github.com/zipurman/oVIRT_Simple_Backup https://www.sepusa.com/ Any others?

Yes, we do backups but not host only. On Tue, Jun 19, 2018 at 2:41 PM femi adegoke <ovirt@fateknollogee.com> wrote:

Hello, we a re in the same situation as you. We tried vprotect but at the end, we used the script provided in the python SDK example: https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-sdk/tree/master/sdk/examples https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-sdk/blob/master/sdk/examples/vm_backup... We adapt it. It use the same logic as the one here : https://github.com/zipurman/oVIRT_Simple_Backup We didn't go for zipurman's solution because we actually don't really know how ovirt's plugins work.

Hi We are running oVirt 4.2.8.2-1.el7. Should probably upgrade but it works. We are backing up the engine<https://ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/chap-Backups_and_Migration.html> every day with dump going to external NFS file system then onto the cloud. For VMs we are doing backups within Linux itself using a program called Restic<https://github.com/restic/restic> which then sends data to cloud S3 service. That runs daily as well. We also save all configuration data, for applications running on our VMs such as Apache, etc, within Ansible. So we can quickly recreate the VM using Ansible, along with any applications, then restore any data, not saved in Ansible, such as private PKI keys or PostgreSQL dump, for example, from Restic. Dockerized applications even easier. There would be some downtime to redeploy a new VM but this is acceptable given the constrains of our environment. I am wondering under what situations has anyone experienced VM corruption? This would help me determine if more effort should be invested in snapshotting VMs and possibly exporting their disks. Though as I recall removing snapshots from my storage domain would require shutting down the VM, right? -- Thanks, Douglas Duckworth, MSc, LFCS HPC System Administrator Scientific Computing Unit<https://scu.med.cornell.edu/>https://github.com/restic/restic Weill Cornell Medicine E: doug@med.cornell.edu O: 212-746-6305 F: 212-746-8690 ________________________________ From: femi adegoke <ovirt@fateknollogee.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 2:40:52 AM To: users@ovirt.org <users@ovirt.org> Subject: [EXTERNAL] [ovirt-users] Re: Agentless backup solutions Is no one doing any backups? _______________________________________________ Users mailing list -- users@ovirt.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-leave@ovirt.org Privacy Statement: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.ovirt.org_site_privacy-2Dpolicy_&d=DwIGaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=2Fzhh_78OGspKQpl_e-CbhH6xUjnRkaqPFUS2wTJ2cw&m=Sv3Sw3M5zdUMYKSEqPfHFLapnpr4Fxef2Y8IZr0iYGI&s=zUPtqH8SNwjeJ2B_0jQzP-dhSHhh5KjPCQOpNilaGT0&e= oVirt Code of Conduct: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.ovirt.org_community_about_community-2Dguidelines_&d=DwIGaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=2Fzhh_78OGspKQpl_e-CbhH6xUjnRkaqPFUS2wTJ2cw&m=Sv3Sw3M5zdUMYKSEqPfHFLapnpr4Fxef2Y8IZr0iYGI&s=EdYysbsWDfc80CK_Kvxbc6wUHUK8_73BNudu-XEtyMU&e= List Archives: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__lists.ovirt.org_archives_list_users-40ovirt.org_message_6RYDKAMDY4LM7CJRAACZOBQJPC4PISTB_&d=DwIGaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=2Fzhh_78OGspKQpl_e-CbhH6xUjnRkaqPFUS2wTJ2cw&m=Sv3Sw3M5zdUMYKSEqPfHFLapnpr4Fxef2Y8IZr0iYGI&s=mWDIqylJw4VFjWrX2E41F3liNT28oj1oedxaKt6xE2E&e=

Vpdotect is working well for us. It also supports incremental backups. You can backup 10 vms on the free tier, at least to try it out. On Wed, Aug 7, 2019 at 3:13 PM Douglas Duckworth <dod2014@med.cornell.edu> wrote:

Just adding my two cents: oVirt Simple Backup can handle XenServer -> RHV/oVirt migrations on the GUI. I’ve not tested it yet, but I will definitely trying this on the following months. oVirt Simple Backup is nice but it only does Full backups. Zipur (the code owner) says he might implement incrementals in the future.

I contacted the folks at Trilio & they gave me a demo. It looks very nice. Unfortunately, it is not yet ready for production. ETA for beta is Aug/Sept time frame.

Sorry to dig up an old thread... These guys at Trilio have turned out to be a complete waste of time. (I could use some more colorful language) After the post from Greg Sheremeta, I followed up with Trilio. A lot of promises/dates were made (by Trilio) as to when a beta would be made available for testing. Needless to say, they never came through. Finally in Dec 2018, they said we are ready for the demo, we will show you a working product. The day came, Trilio said, sorry it's too close to Xmas, we will postpone the demo's till 2019. In 2019, I continued to follow up & finally they set a date for another demo - Jan 29. On Jan. 29, we get on the Webex, they said, sorry the demo just broke 10 mins prior to our call, so no demo. They show me some screenshots & their OpenStack version & again promise to get me beta software in a few days. I continue to follow up (via email) Yesterday (Feb 6), I get an email from Trilio....(copied & pasted below): "We started RHV betas and decided to prioritize current Trilio customers (those that purchased Triliovault for Openstack). If you would like to be part of the beta now then We can sign you up as a certified Trilio reseller which has a $7,500 Starter Fee. The $7,500 will be credited against your first customer order that is at least $7,500 so it will eventually cost you nothing. Many of our partners can apply the fee against revenue so it's a great tax incentive, but you can confirm with your finance department. Please Lmk how you would like to proceed." Is this typical behavior of RH partners?

Hi Niyazi, Do you work at Open Bacchus? Does Open Bacchus do incremental backups?

I recently found this solution that is in Red Hat ecosystem and tells to cover both RHV (only 4.1 up to now but 4.2 seems in testing) and oVirt. It seems you can use a full featured trial. Not tried myself yet https://access.redhat.com/ecosystem/software/3338211 Gianluca
