You don't need to host the engine on the gluster cluster.
I know people you have hosted the engine on a bare metal (pacemaker cluster) , so feel
free to experiment.
The only requirement is that tge engine needs to be able to communicate with the hosts
(I'm not sure if layer 2 connectivity is necessary).

Every piece of documentation I read regarding the setup of Gluster seems to suggest using
at least one of the the nodes to host the engine. Is this a requirement of can I use an
engine that is deployed on a VM on another server in the same network? Any info would be
much appreciated.
