Backup & Restore

Hi,
I'm testing backup & restore on Ovirt 4.2.
I follow this doc https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/chap-Backups_and_Migration/
Try to restore to a fresh installation but always get this error message:
restore-permissions
Preparing to restore:
- Unpacking file 'back_file'
Restoring:
- Files
Provisioning PostgreSQL users/databases:
- user 'engine', database 'engine'
Restoring:
FATAL: Can't connect to database 'ovirt_engine_history'. Please see '/usr/bin/engine-backup --help'.
On the live engine I run # engine-backup --scope=all --mode=backup --file=file_name --log=log_file_name
And try to restore on a fresh installation:
# engine-backup --mode=restore --file=file_name --log=log_file_name --provision-db --restore-permissions
Any Idea?
Thanks

Failed to synchronize networks of Provider ovirt-provider-ovn
by Kapetanakis Giannis
Hi,
After upgrading to 4.2.1 I have problems with ovn provider.
I'm getting "Failed to synchronize networks of Provider ovirt-provider-ovn."
I use custom SSL certificate in apache and I guess this is the reason.
I've tried to update ovirt-provider-ovn.conf with
[OVIRT]
#ovirt-ca-file=/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/ca.pem
ovirt-ca-file=/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/apache-ca.pem
but still no go
Any tips on this?
thanks

Network issues with oVirt 4.2 and cloud-init

We're using cloud-init to customize VMs built from a template. We're using =
static IPV4 settings so we're specifying an IP address, subnet mask, and ga=
teway. There is apparently a bug in the current version of cloud-init shipp=
ing as part of CentOS 7.4 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3D14=
92726) that fails to set the gateway properly. In the description of the bu=
g, it says it is fixed in RHEL 7.5 but also says one can use https://people=
.redhat.com/rmccabe/cloud-init/cloud-init-0.7.9-20.el7.x86_64.rpm which is =
what we're doing.
When the new VM first boots, the 3 IPv4 settings are all set correctly. Reb=
oots of the VM maintain the settings properly. But, if the VM is shut down =
and started again via the oVirt GUI, all of the IPV4 settings on the eth0 v=
irtual NIC are lost and the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 shows=
that the NIC is now set up for DHCP.
Are we doing something incorrectly?

Unable to backend oVirt with Cinder

I've got Cinder configured and pointed at Ceph for it's back end storage. I can run ceph commands on the cinder machine and cinder is configured for noauth and I've also tried it with Keystone for auth. I can run various cinder commands and it'll return as expected.
When I configure it in oVirt it'll add the external provider fine, but when I go to create a disk it doesn't populate the volume type field, it's just empty. The corresponding command for cinder: cinder type-list and cinder type-show <name> returns fine and it is public.
Ovirt and Cinder are on the same host so it isn't a firewall issue.
Cinder config:

Recovering oVirt-Engine with a backup before upgrading to 4.2

Hi All,
I'm still facing issues with my HE engine. Here are the steps that I took t=
o end up in this situation:
- Update Engine from 4.1.7 to 4.1.9
o That worked as expected
- Automatic Backup of Engine DB in the night
- Upgraded Engine from 4.1.9 to 4.2.1
o That worked fine
- Noticed Issues with the HA support for HE
o Cause was not having the latest ovirt-ha agent/broker version on hosts
- After updating the first host with the latest packages for the Ag=
ent/Broker engine was started twice
o As a result the Engine VM Disk was corrupted and there is no Backup of =
the Disk
o There is also no Backup of the Engine DB with version 4.2
- VM disk was repaired with fsck.ext4, but DB is corrupt
o Can't restore the Engine DB because the Backup DB from Engine V 4.1
- Rolled back all changes on Engine VM to 4.1.9 and imported Backup
o Checked for HA VMs to set as disabled and started the Engine
- Login is fine but the Engine is having trouble picking up and inf=
ormation from the Hosts
o No information on running VMs or hosts status
- Final Situation
o 2 Hosts have VMs still running and I can't stop those
o I still have the image of my corrupted Engine VM (v4.2)
Since there were no major changes after upgrading from 4.1 to 4.2, would it=
be possible to manually restore the 4.1 DB to the 4.2 Engine VM to this up=
and running again or are there modifications made to the DB on upgrading t=
hat are relevant for this ? All my work on rolling back to 4.1.9 with the D=
B restore failed as the Engine is not capable of picking up information fro=
m the hosts. Lessons learned is to always make a copy/snapshot of the engin=
e VM disk before upgrading anything. What are my options on getting back to=
a working environment ? Any help or hint is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Sven

Quack,
On behalf of the oVirt infra team, I'd like to announce the current
Mailing-Lists system is going to be upgraded to a brand new Mailman 3
installation on Monday during the slot 11:00-12:00 JST.
It should not take a full hour to migrate as we already made incremental
synchronization with the current system but better keep some margin. The
system will then take over delivery of the mails but might be a bit slow
at first as it needs to reindex all the archived mails (which might take
a few hours).
To manage your subscriptions and delivery settings you can do this
easily on the much nicer web interface (https://lists.ovirt.org). There
is a notion of account so you don't need to login separately for each ML.=
You can Sign In using Fedora, GitHub or Google or create a local account
if you prefer. Please keep in mind signing in with a different method
would create separate accounts (which cannot be merged at the moment).
But you can easily link your account to other authentication methods in
your settings (click on you name in the up-right corner -> Account ->
Account Connections).
As for the original mail archives, because the previous system did not
have stable URLs, we cannot create mappings to the new pages. We decided
to keep the old archives around on the same URL (/pipermail), so the
Internet links would still work fine.
Hope you'd be happy with the new system.

vdsClient is removed and replaced by vdsm-client
by Irit Goihman
Hi All,
vdsClient will be removed from master branch today.
It is using XMLRPC protocol which has been deprecated and replaced by
JSON-RPC.
A new client for vdsm was introduced in 4.1: vdsm-client.
This is a simple client that uses JSON-RPC protocol which was introduced in
ovirt 3.5.
The client is not aware of the available methods and parameters, and you
should consult
the schema [1] in order to construct the desired command.
Future version should parse the schema and provide online help.
If you're using vdsClient, we will be happy to assist you in migrating to
the new vdsm client.
*vdsm-client usage:*
vdsm-client [-h] [-a ADDRESS] [-p PORT] [--unsecure] [--timeout TIMEOUT]
[-f FILE] namespace method [name=value [name=value] ...]
Invoking simple methods:
# vdsm-client Host getVMList
['b3f6fa00-b315-4ad4-8108-f73da817b5c5']
For invoking methods with many or complex parameters, you can read
the parameters from a JSON format file:
# vdsm-client Lease info -f lease.json
where lease.json file content is:
{
"lease": {
"sd_id": "75ab40e3-06b1-4a54-a825-2df7a40b93b2",
"lease_id": "b3f6fa00-b315-4ad4-8108-f73da817b5c5"
}
}
It is also possible to read parameters from standard input, creating
complex parameters interactively:
# cat <<EOF | vdsm-client Lease info -f -
{
"lease": {
"sd_id": "75ab40e3-06b1-4a54-a825-2df7a40b93b2",
"lease_id": "b3f6fa00-b315-4ad4-8108-f73da817b5c5"
}
}
EOF
*Constructing a command from vdsm schema:*
Let's take VM.getStats as an example.
This is the entry in the schema:
VM.getStats:
added: '3.1'
description: Get statistics about a running virtual machine.
params:
- description: The UUID of the VM
name: vmID
type: *UUID
return:
description: An array containing a single VmStats record
type:
- *VmStats
namespace: VM
method name: getStats
params: vmID
The vdsm-client command is:
# vdsm-client VM getStats vmID=b3f6fa00-b315-4ad4-8108-f73da817b5c5
*Invoking getVdsCaps command:*
# vdsm-client Host getCapabilities
Please consult vdsm-client help and man page for further details and
options.

ovirt snapshot issue
by Alex K
Hi folks,
I am facing frequently the following issue:
On some large VMs (Windows 2016 with two disk drives, 60GB and 500GB) when
attempting to create a snapshot of the VM, the VM becomes unresponsive.
The errors that I managed to collect were:

As soon as the VM is unresponsive, the VM console that was already open
freezes. I can resume the VM only by powering off and on.
I am using ovirt 4.1.9 with 3 nodes and self-hosted engine. I am running
mostly Windows 10 and Windows 2016 server VMs. I have installed latest
guest agents from:
http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-4.2/iso/oVirt-toolsSetup/4.2-1.el7.c...
At the screen where one takes a snapshot I get a warning saying "Could not
detect guest agent on the VM. Note that without guest agent the data on the
created snapshot may be inconsistent". See attached. I have verified that
ovirt guest tools are installed and shown at installed apps at engine GUI.
Also Ovirt Guest Agent (32 bit) and qemu-ga are listed as running at the
windows tasks manager. Shouldn't ovirt guest agent be 64 bit on Windows 64
bit?
Any advice will be much appreciated.
