Check the performance by using multi queue and 'none' I/O scheduler.

Yes, VMs can benefit from Hugepages - but there are some open issues and you have to
leave that for oVirt 4.4
Also, check that your hosts cpus are in highest C state -> there are nice articles
about that.
There is an interesting thread about SPICE streaming for better in-VM performance.
Also, as it was mentioned - there are different VM types -> try the recommended
