Hi all, As we want to bring some more action in the community and some collaboration, we would like to setup some new place to communicate for oVirt. The current IRC channel is quite dead, and I think IRC is not what we want to use anymore. Therefor the idea was to setup a Matrix Server/Channels or a Mattermost instance. I think both have their advantages and disadvantages, but might be nice to hear some feedback from the community. What would you prefer as a place to communicate with each other? - Matrix channel on matrix.org - Matrix server with multiple channels - Mattermost instance Or perhaps some other idea's? :) Please let me know so this can be setup! Thanks Jean-Louis

I personally prefer slack or telegram. On Tue, Feb 11, 2025, 08:07 Jean-Louis Dupond via Users <users@ovirt.org> wrote:

A Discourse Forum for better searching Topics, HowTo's, ... and a Matrix Chat for actual Discussions would be good i think. -- Greetings Christian Am Dienstag, dem 11.02.2025 um 14:07 +0100 schrieb Jean-Louis Dupond via Users:

Hello Jean-Louis,
As we want to bring some more action in the community and some collaboration, we would like to setup some new place to communicate for oVirt. The current IRC channel is quite dead, and I think IRC is not what we want to use anymore.
It's good that you're bringing up this topic.
Therefor the idea was to setup a Matrix Server/Channels or a Mattermost instance. I think both have their advantages and disadvantages, but might be nice to hear some feedback from the community.

We use Mattermost internally ourselves and it is a great communication tool. However, the ability to make voice calls in group rooms was removed in the last community version. Therefore, the question would be to what extent one can rely on the current range of functions in the future. I would also be fine with Matrix, because the barrier to participation is just as low here as with Mattermost and both can be self-hosted. I myself would probably use Mattermost/Matrix to ask or answer questions (during the day) that might need to be asked or answered a little more promptly than on the mailing list. What support does RedHat provide for infrastructure? Does it still exist? If you need hosting support, we'd be happy to help. -- Kind Regards Jan

Being that Oracle uses Slack, and ATM they are one of the key contributors, might be easiest to find advanced answers that way

Anything that's not IRC 🙂I've been using it since the early 2000's and I still hate it. I've never used Matrix, but see above comment about IRC 😉 I'd be equally happy with slack or discord or even teams 🙂 ________________________________ From: Jean-Louis Dupond via Users <users@ovirt.org> Sent: Wednesday, February 12, 2025 12:07 AM To: users@ovirt.org <users@ovirt.org> Subject: [ovirt-users] oVirt Chat Hi all, As we want to bring some more action in the community and some collaboration, we would like to setup some new place to communicate for oVirt. I use Mattermost and it's fine for multiple/large teams. However, for a community project, I suggest looking at where others are based. From my point of view, Matrix has the advantage of being decentralized (and with the international context that's a good move) and Discord is gaining in popularity. They both have my vote! Cheers, Renaud

Hello, It's clear that the choice should focus on an open-source project. Indeed, Matrix or Mattermost are viable options. However, I believe using an already managed instance and opening one or more channels on an existing platform is a better option. This could include having a web front-end for quicker access. Therefore, logically, I would lean more towards a Matrix channel on matrix.org. Best regards, Pierre Le 11/02/2025 à 14:07, Jean-Louis Dupond via Users a écrit :
