Windows Server 2012 R2 and Nehalem CPUs
by Chris Adams
I have some older servers in my oVirt 3.5.6 cluster (on CentOS 7.2) that
have Nehalem model Xeon CPUs, so that's my cluster CPU type. When I try
to install Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, it gets through the
"copying files to disk" stage and to the first reboot, but then
blue-screens with a KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED error (right about the
time it should be setting up devices).
It does not appear to be related to any virtio driver (I tried with IDE
disk, and with virtio-scsi and memory balloon disabled).
I have Fedora 23 (of course newer qemu-kvm version) on my desktop (with
a much newer Intel CPU), with the libvirt tools installed, so I
installed Windows there, and it worked. If I step the CPU back to
Nehalem, it fails the same way. Go forward one step to Westmere, and it
works (the only CPU feature difference for libvirt appears to be aes,
but configuring Nehalem+aes doesn't seem to work, so there's more to it
than that).
Windows Server 2012 R2 is supposed to still run on Nehalem CPUs, so I
guess there's a bug in qemu-kvm's emulation or features?
I do also have a couple of servers with Sandy Bridge CPUs in my cluster.
Is there any practical way to restrict a VM to running on a couple of
hosts (and then use a hook to override the CPU model)?

My name is Nha and now I had a really serious problem with ovirt 3.5.6.
I set up ovirt 3.5.6 running on single server with DC name is Local, =
storage was local too. Then I want to move VM from local server to =
another local, so that I put a backup hard drive to move all VM into it.
Everything was fine. Then I detached the hard drive and all vm on backup =
storage was deleted.
=20
Step executed.
1. Shut down VM.
2. Select Disk tab and select a disk.
3. Click move and start to move to backup storage.
4. Put back up storage to Maintenance
5. Click detach on back up storage.
=20
Please help because data on vm was really important.

python floppy in RunOnce mode
by Giulio Casella
Hi,
I'm trying to boot a vm with non persistent floppy using python ovirt
sdk (the "RunOnce" way in administrator portal), but guest OS can't see
floppy drive. The ultimate goal is to deploy floppy with sysprep
unattend.xml file for windows 7 pools of vm.
Here is a snippet of code I use:
-------------------------------------------------
myvm = api.vms.get(name="vmname")
content="This is file content!"
f=params.File(name="foobar.txt",content=content)
fs=params.Files()
fs.add_file(f)
payload=params.Payload()
payload.set_type("floppy")
payload.set_files(fs)
payloads=params.Payloads()
payloads.add_payload(payload)
thevm=params.VM()
thevm.set_payloads(payloads)
action=params.Action(vm=thevm)
myvm.start(action=action)
xml = ParseHelper.toXml(action)
print xml
-------------------------------------------------
As you can see, for debugging purpose, I print my xml action, and I get:
-------------------------------------------------
<action>
<vm>
<payloads>
<payload type="floppy">
<files>
<file>
<name>foobar.txt</name>
<content>This is file content</content>
</file>
</files>
</payload>
</payloads>
</vm>
</action>
-------------------------------------------------
in the admin portal I can see my vm in "RunOnce" state, but no floppy is
present...
In fact in the vm process command line
(ps -ef | grep qemu-kvm | grep vmname) I can't see -drive option
referring to floppy (I only see 2 "-drive" options, referring to vm
system disk and to a correctly mounted cdrom ISO)
What I'm doing wrong?
(The engine is RHEV-M version 3.4.1-0.31.el6ev)
Thanks in advance,
Giulio

Rest api body for updating vm os type
by Qingyun Ao
Hello, all,
I want to update vm os type by ovirt rest api.
The following is my request:
Method: put
Content-Type: application/xml
Body: <vm><os type="windows_7"></os></vm>
The response from ovirt engine is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<fault>
<reason>Operation Failed</reason>
<detail>[Cannot edit VM. Invalid time zone for given OS type.]</detail>
</fault>
Can anybody give a correct body for updating vm os type from "other" to
"windows_7"?
Thank you very much.
