oVirt CLI tool for automation tasks
by munnadawood＠gmail.com 29 Jun '26

29 Jun '26

We recently migrated from VMware to oVirt. I am looking for any CLI tool well suited for my automation tasks like VM create, clone, migrate 100s of Virtual machines in oVirt cluster. with VMware I was using govc (vSphere CLI built on top of govmomi). Another option I read is powercli, quite unsure if it works with oVirt. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Hosted Engine Deployment timeout waiting for VM
by Jonas Liechti 09 Feb '26

Hello users, I am currently trying to deploy the self-hosted engine via the web interface but it seems stuck at the task "Wait for the local VM" (https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-ansible-collection/blob/master/roles/hosted_…) I am unsure what to look at for getting more info as I haven't worked a lot with Ansible before. Do you have any idea how to debug? The temporary IP is added to /etc/hosts and I can also login to the VM via SSH: [root@server-005 ~]# cat /etc/hosts 192.168.1.97 ovirt-engine-test.admin.int.rabe.ch # temporary entry added by hosted-engine-setup for the bootstrap VM 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4 ::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6 10.128.16.5 server-005.admin.int.rabe.ch 10.128.16.6 server-006.admin.int.rabe.ch 10.128.16.7 server-007.admin.int.rabe.ch #10.128.32.2 ovirt-engine-test.admin.int.rabe.ch 10.132.16.5 server-005.storage.int.rabe.ch 10.132.16.6 server-006.storage.int.rabe.ch 10.132.16.7 server-007.storage.int.rabe.ch [root@server-005 ~]# ssh ovirt-engine-test.admin.int.rabe.ch root(a)ovirt-engine-test.admin.int.rabe.ch's password: Web console: https://ovirt-engine-test.admin.int.rabe.ch:9090/ or https://192.168.1.97:9090/ Last login: Mon Apr 18 11:33:53 2022 from 192.168.1.1 [root@ovirt-engine-test ~]# ip a 1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000 link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00 inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever inet6 ::1/128 scope host valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever 2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP group default qlen 1000 link/ether 00:16:3e:58:7a:a3 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 192.168.1.97/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global dynamic noprefixroute eth0 valid_lft 2313sec preferred_lft 2313sec inet6 fe80::216:3eff:fe58:7aa3/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever Thank you for any tips for debugging. It doesn't matter if it's a fresh install or import. I go to ui and edit vm and change to one of the default size templates, usually large, it boots with no nic and I can add a nic once it's booted and restart it, then it gets an IP and is fine unless you shut it down. In that case, you have to go through setting size and adding nic after vm boot. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance/

Unable to upload or download iso via admin portal
by Igor Filipovic 10 Dec '25

Hi, I'm having a trouble on fresh 4.4.10.7 installation (on oracle linux), I'm not able to upload or download any file using storage domain upload image function. I've imported CA certificate and have tried on several browsers (firefow, chrome, edge), on different computers (and browsers are green - claiming that I'm securely connected), but I'm always getting error regarding CA certificate when I test connection, or when I try to upload ISO image. I've tried to upload ISO image via cli commands (upload_disk.py), and that scenario was successful, however this method It is not very convenient for my co-workers. I have 5 physical hosts, one is dedicated to run ovirt-engine, and other 4 are kvm hypervisors. When I try to upload ISO this is what engine.log logs: 2023-04-08 11:00:28,339+02 INFO [org.ovirt.engine.core.bll.storage.disk.image.TransferImageStatusCommand] (default task-2) [f6b62add-0a0c-45ee-a985-a76171843382] Running command: TransferImageStatusCommand internal: false. Installing oVirt on RHEL vs CentOS Stream, Alma or Rocky Linux
by Richard W.M. Jones 07 Oct '25

07 Oct '25

I'm still struggling to get oVirt installed. It absolutely will not install on RHEL 8, the documentation here is flat out wrong: https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/installing_ovirt_as_a_standalone_manage… javapackages-tools is not a module that exists in RHEL 8. Apparently it's a CentOS PowerTools module. Since original CentOS no longer really exists either, does anyone have any opinions or experience with installing oVirt on any of: - CentOS Stream 8 - Alma Linux 8.5 - Rocky Linux Alma in particular looks like a straight replacement for old CentOS. Rich. -- Richard Jones, Virtualization Group, Red Hat http://people.redhat.com/~rjones Read my programming and virtualization blog: http://rwmj.wordpress.com virt-top is 'top' for virtual machines. Tiny program with many powerful monitoring features, net stats, disk stats, logging, etc. http://people.redhat.com/~rjones/virt-top

Is oVirt a dead project ???
by Diggy Mc 18 Sep '25

18 Sep '25

Based on the lack of list activity and updates, I am starting to think oVirt is a dead project. I sure hope not. It is a great product. My two cents: Whomever at Red Hat decided to abandon RHEV is an idiot. j/s Does anyone know if Oracle plans to fund the oVirt project? I think it would be a great move on their part. I believe virtualization still has a future for years to come. If oVirt is a dead project, what is the next best choice enterprise virtualization? ProxMox? Microsoft Hypervisor? Something else? Feedback is appreciated because I manage/recommend virtualization solutions for several small- and medium-sized companies.

New oVirt plugin for The Foreman
by Frank Wall 01 Sep '25

01 Sep '25

Hi, for those of you using Foreman with oVirt: Please note that starting with Foreman 3.16 you have to install a new oVirt plugin. The plugin will be available from both the official Foreman DNF/DEB repositories, as well as from rubygems.org. For those of you that would like to support the new oVirt plugin, use the GitHub issue tracker to create issues and submit pull-requests: https://github.com/markt-de/foreman_ovirt/ Ciao - Frank

Re: ovirt 4.5 VNC Failed to complete handshake Error in the pull function on Windows

Were you able to get this working? To fix the problem: 1. Download the Engine CA Certificate (pki-resource) 2. Copy the Engine CA Certificate to /etc/pki/ca-trust/source/anchors 3. run #update-ca-trust extract 4. Restart your web browser and login to oVirt Manager 5. Check VM - Console settings 6. Launch Console - Open .vv file and you should be connected If it errors check DNS make sure you can resolve to your ovirt-engine. -Mark
