self hosted engine migration to existsing node question

So I have a number of nodes already running and in production. My engine is sitting on a test box, and needs to be moved onto the already existing nodes. I've read all the docs, but none of them seem to address the the use of an already existing node. if I run hosted-engine --deploy on an already existing node, is it going to mess things up, or is it really just adding some additional config files, and creating a new VM? Also does it take any additional work to get the engine enabled on all of the other nodes for the HA version? thanks, -jj-

I am however not to= o impressed with trying to actually get a console into a VM. Native gluster without FUSE

Hello, at http://www.ovirt.org/Features/GlusterFS_Storage_Domain I can read oVirt allows glusterfs domains which maps to <disk type=network..>...</disk> in libvirt xml without USE overhead. My oVirt still creates and uses mount for disks at qemu as -drive file=/rhev/data-center/mnt/glusterSD.... Is possible to use GlusterFS storage domain without FUSE? Fedora 19, oVirt 3.4 (Centos 7 the same) Thanks! Jiri

Admin console - Always show advanced options

Hi All, When viewing/editing a VM's properties in the admin console is it possible to show the advanced options by default? Quite frankly, I can't understand why that isn't the default. The standard options show nothing that isn't already visible in the properties window in the console, so what's the point of making that the default in the editing window? Regards, John

User permissions for user portal

Hello, I can't figure out right user permissions. I can add user which can do just this through user portal: - see and change status of VM (including Power Off) - remote console - change CD (+ maybe os type) Change status and console (without power off) comes with UserRole, power off and change CD comes with UserVmManager. But UserVmManager brigns also wide options to manage network interfaces, disks etc, what is unsafe for me to delegate it to this user. Thanks, J.M.

Previously on CentOS-6 I used "sys-unconfig" or "touch /.unconfigured", but this is on CentOS-7 no longer possible. I can use on CentOS-7 the "nmtui" after the OS is loaded, but maybe someone knows a way to run it during the boot sequence. Hi, I tested the support to limit CPU utilization of hosts. Setting it up in the GUI worked correctly, but for running VM settings are ignored. I used XMLRPC protocol to avoid [1]. To simulate VM CPU utilization I used stress tool [2]. Testing steps: 1. Create a VM with the same number of CPUs as Host 2. Create CPU type QoS in DC and set the limit to desired value 3. In Cluster create new CPU profile with above QoS and remove the default CPU profile 4. Start the VM and execute (N is a number of CPUs in VM) stress --cpu N 5. Connect to Host and execute sar -u 1 10 No matter what the limit was set to (1, 50, 100), host CPUs were always utilized to 100%. So I create bug to cover this [3]. Main data storage won't come up

I have a single node ovirt environment (I know its dumb, but I still do). Today for some reason it went down and after coming up again glusterfs wouldn't start. I had managed to fix that by reinitialising the volumes in gluster. However now I am struggling with the issue that the data storage domain for ovirt refuses to come up. Gluster gets the volumes online and mounting gv0 (the data volume) works as well. I have no idea how to go about this. Let me know if any more information is required to resolve this. Hi, everyone, I'm trying to integrate oVirt 3.5 RC2 with latest OpenLDAP 2.4. Both are running on a same server, CentOS 6.5 (Final), oVirt Engine server. But the integration does not succeed. First, I set up OpenLDAP according to the following url: http://www.ovirt.org/LDAP_Quick_Start. And many errors occurred during setup. (like: ldap_modify: Other (e.g., implementation specific) error (80) ). Next, I installed ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap.noarch 0.0.0-0.0.master.20140904095149.gitc7bd415.el6 by yum. Then I set up ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap according to the following url: https://www.mail-archive.com/devel@ovirt.org/msg01449.html After restarting ovirt-engine, the engine.log output: engine.log:2014-09-18 16:35:09, 691 INFO [org.ovirt.engineextensions.aaa.ldap. Framework] (MSC service thread 1-6) Creating LDAP pool 'authz' for 'authn-company'' Error is not detected here. Access to OpenLDAP server succeeded, and the user authentication succeeded too. I think that the cause of failing OpenLDAP integration is OpenLDAP side and the document http://www.ovirt.org/LDAP_Quick_Start is old and not fit to the latest version of OpenLDAP. If anyone know the latest document for the OpenLDAP integration or any help for resolving this problem, please let me know. Very thanks.

Sir I cant add domain using the command rhevm-manage-domains. The command that I executed is rhevm-manage-domains action=add domain=example.com user=rhevadmin provider=IPA interactive. The error is Failed to find example.com domain, client not find un Kerberos database. Can u please tell me the solution for this problem as far as possible. I was testing fence kdump integration. Due to the following issues I was not able to test over JSON RPC and all tests were done with XML RPC 1) Manually applied : http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/32843 (this was not included yet in 3.5 and cause an exception in VDSM when fenceNode is called) 2) JSON : does not return status correctly : Test Succeeded, null Therefor , can not stop/start/restart host Related to engine patch : http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/32855/ not back-ported yet to 3.5 (blocker IMO) -------------------------------------------------------------- ALL tests below should be redone after resolving JSON issues ! -------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------- General comment ------------------- All fence kdump flows are related to a scenario in which host became non responsive. In the case of manual PM action (stop/restart) fence kdump is not taking place. We started a vm using the posted ovirt node iso and actually didn't get to test the complete hosted engine setup due to failure which was unclear [3] (opened a bug for that). [OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3] backup/restore/dr + Node

I installed a fresh engine on CentOS 6.5, and 3.5 nodes on two nested VMs. A significant portion of the day was spent testing basic Node functionality to ensure we didn't have any more SELinux denials, install problems on EFI, or other issues, after which I moved onto engine. DR was simply tested by pulling the network cable in the middle of an operation, disconnecting both nodes and waiting for storage arbitration to succeed, and uncleanly terminating the VM running engine then restarting. Backup and restore was tested with ovirt-engine-backup (which I haven't used before, and is quite nice).

Hi list! I got hold of an iSCSI lun and set out to test deploying the hosted-engine over it (I've been successfully running hosted-engine over NFS since oVirt-3.4 and have successfully upgraded it to 3.5 and jsonrpc communication). Unfortunately, things didn't start well with a small issue when calling hosted-engine --deploy Due to the vdsm certs not being propertly generated: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1142696 After working around that doing: vdsm-tool configure --force I repeated the deploy command and answered every question. It created the VM image, but ultimately failed to set up a password for VNC (for that is what I chose to access the VM). https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1142710 I attached the vdsm logs and will investigate more to try to give more info to the hosted engine devs ;-) Regards, Toni

OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3 Instance types

Hi, For the 3rd test day I was assigned to test the new instance types. The following instance types are available: custom: Aka what it was before tiny: 512M memory and 1 cpu small: 2048M memory and 1 cpu medium: 4096M memory and 1 cpu large: 8192M memory and 2 cpus x-large: 16384M memory and 4 cpus I verified that each selection modifies the properties accordingly. As well as the ability to change instance types after creating the VMs and that those changes are reflected. If you change a property lets say the memory after selecting an instance type it changes to custom automatically but keeps all the other pre-selected options the same. The only thing that won't change the instance type to custom if you change the 'optimized for' from server to desktop. This normally changes the soundcard enabled check box in the console tab but if an instance type is selected it doesn't. I don't know if this is on purpose or not. So all in all it works as expected, with a potential minor issue. Alexander

OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3: backup/restore and disaster recovery

Hi, today I had to test how to recover a broken system using backup/restore tool [1] or disaster recovery procedure [2]. Unfortunately I really had a lot of troubles just trying to setup my test environment so no good news on that side. I was using two host: one for the engine, the other as an hypervisor. Both with latest fedora 19 updates. For a fault of mine I add oVirt 3.5 RC2 repository on the engine host but I forgot to do the same on the second host and it generates a lot of problems. I installed the ovirt engine, release 3.5 RC2, on the first host and from the web admin UI I was trying to add the second host. I discovered that using jsonrpc mode it doesn't check/enforce or at least advice about cluster compatibility level failing silently. I opened a bug for that [3]. Than I start using xmlrpc mode that suggested me to downgrade the cluster compatibility mode to 3.3; I did that but it still failed adding my host apparently due to SELinux or Gluster errors; I opened a bug also for that [4]. So I understood that I forgot to add oVirt 3.5 repo on the second host; I opened a bug against host-deploy with install rpms but doesn't handle RPM repos. On my opinion it would make the setup more user friendly or at least more controllable for us [5]. So I added the yum repository and I tried again; I noticed that host-deploy upgrades vdsm stuff but it wasn't enough to get 3.5 compatibility level so, investigating it a bit, I noticed that host-deploy upgrades vdsm stuff but completely ignores libvirt one generating a nonworking setup; I opened a bug also for that [6]. At the end, after manually upgrade libvirt rpms I was able to add my host. Than I briefly tested backup/restore and disaster recovery procedures which seam to work as expected. So, at the end, on my opinion we have still to work a bit more to make the setup more user friendly. OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3: replace XML-rpc with JSON-rpc

Hi everyone of this test day I played with the new JSON-rpc transport, which is enabled by default. I set up from scratch two hypervisors running on RHEL 6.5, while Engine was running on F19. I created everything from scratch and tested all the flows I known good enough, including less-then-common stuff. The list includes creating storage domains, VMs, hotplug/unplug disks, snapshots, migration, hibernation and dehibernation. On top of that, I prepared an environment to run more tests, that included create 200 VMs, started/stopped 100 of them to test. I kept an eye on the logs other than Engine. Everything I tried went OK, and logs look good to me. I run in a few hiccups, which I mention for the sake of completeness: - VDSM refused to start or run VMs initially: libvirt config included relics from past environment on the same box, not JSON-rpc fault. Fixed with new config and (later) a reboot. - Trying recovery, Engine took longer than expected to sync up with VDSM. I have not hard data and feeling is not enough to file a BZ, so I didn't. - Still trying recovery, one and just one time Engine had stale data from VDSM (reported two VMs as present which actually aren't). Not sure it was related to JSON-rpc, can't reproduce, so not filed a BZ. Since I need to continue profiling anyway (better late than never I guess), I include a couple of test to see if JSON-rpc makes any difference to JSON-rpc. Hi, I installed fresh engine on CentOS 6.5 (inside a VM) and dwh + reports to other CentOS 6.5 VM. Except being a bit confused by the certificate signing step during the setup all went well and I can see that the dwh service is running and I can access the reports site. I started in the afternoon, because I had to reinstall my hosts first, so I might try poking around tomorrow as well. Virtual Machines reporting as paused

A large number of my virtual machines are reporting in a paused state but they are actually up and running. Unfortunately I don't look at this cluster very often so I don't know exactly when it got into this state, I believe it may have happened a couple months back when I deployed a change to /etc/vdsm/vdsm.conf to throttle virtual machines migrations. I deployed this change via puppet and had puppet cycle the vdsm daemon. All of the vdsm daemons in the cluster were restarted in a short period of time. Since this happened some time back all the logs have rotated off. I have tried restarting vdsmd and libvirtd, but that doesn't appear to return the virtual machines to an up state. The output of "vdsClient -s 0 getAllVmStats" reports them as paused, "virsh -r list --all" reports them as running. From the GUI I can click run and the VM will show “Up” in the GUI and vdsClient. But if I restart vdsm, the VM's revert back to displaying a paused state. I did find that the *.recovery files in /var/run/vdsm contain a status of Paused even when the GUI and vdsClient are reporting it as up. I did try and change the status in this file while vdsm was down and then start vdsm, but it had no effect and the entry in the *.recovery file which reverted to paused. p335 sasS'status' p336 S'Paused' Any idea what might have caused the VM's to report as paused and how to recover from it? I am running ovirt-3.3.4-1 and vdsm-4.13.3-4

VM Network Interfaces - bad cluster network and VLAN assignment

Hello, I have 4 Cluster networks and I am trying to add 2 NICs to VM now: nic0 -> br0 nic1 -> br1 At ovirt-engine it seems ok, but assignment in qemu is incorrect - going to this: nic0 -> br1 nic1 -> br0 So nics belongs to incorrect bridges and so incorrect VLANs. Cannot create disk image on storage domain NOT master

oVirt Engine Virtual Appliance for 3.5 is ready for testing

Hello! The ready-to-use Engine appliance is now building again and should contain the the latest and greatest 3.5rc2 packages. That appliance can be used for testing hosted engine, as well as testing oVirt Engine 3.5 in general. The ova (intended to be used with hosted engine setup) and the qcow2 (intended to be used for testing) images can be found here: http://jenkins.ovirt.org/view/All/job/ovirt-appliance_master_merged/ All relevant packages are pre-installed, but the appliance still needs to be configured. To configure the appliance you need to run: $ engine-setup --offline --config-append=ovirt-engine-answers inside the appliance after downloading it. Please let us know if you have any issues. Moving hosted-engine NFS storage

I was thinking it would be relatively simple: 1. Stop hosted-engine 2. Copy existing share to new nfs share 3. Edit /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/hosted-engine.conf and change storag= e to the new address 4. Restart hosted-engine services on hosts 5. Restart hosted-engine However online reading says that this won't work because the storage domain= info is stored in different places. Is there a procedure or anything for = how to do this? cloud-init issues on fedora ovirt

I am running ovirt 3.4.3 on a Fedora 19 manager and have 1 node running Fedora 19 as well. I am attempting to get cloud-init to work on a CentOS VM but I am running into issues. I can see where in the log it mounts /dev/sr1 to /tmp/tmp_random_location and where it reads the meta-data.json and user_data from that location but after it unmounts it moves on to /var/lib/cloud/data/instance-id and returns "No instance datasource found! Likely bad things to come!" Has anyone seen this before? Am I missing something? -- Patrick Pierson

Gluster command [<UNKNOWN>] failed on server

I gave up on trying to import my gluster config into ovirt so I tried a fresh install and just set the gluster peers without creating any volumes. However none of my hosts will activate, when I try I get: Gluster command [<UNKNOWN>] failed on server virt01a. Can't understand Template Sub Version

Hi, All I'm using oVirt Engine Version: 3.4.3-1.el6, but I can't understand this function. I have 3 question: 1 How to change a vm to use other template sub version? I don't want to build a new vm from new template version. 2 How to update a pool to use other template sub version? I'm using non latest version, and shutdown all vm of this pool, but I still can't change template version. 3 How to create a pool with disable stateless function? In the property of template vm, I'm sure I don't enable "stateless". But in the testing, I found all the vm are stateless vm. How to disable it, or I'll lost all config and personal data. Move ovirt-engine to a new server

Hi guys, Please could someone try assist me. I'm starting to lose hair over this :) I'm trying to migrate my current engine to a new host with the same OS and hostname. Centos 6.5, ovirt-engine-3.4.3-1.el6.noarch I've installed all the packages, I run engine-setup and go through the options keeping the details the same as before, I then restore my config back to /etc/ovirt-engine as well as to /etc/pki/ovirt-engine, but when it gets to trying to restore my database I get the following error... [root@backup dbscripts]# ./restore.sh -u postgres -f /mnt/fw-ovirt-backup/engine-db-2014-09-15-16-48.sql psql: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "postgres" Database engine does not exist, please create an empty database named engine.
