No, The only way you have is to configure cinder to manage ceph pool or in alternative you have to deploy an iscsi gateway, no other ways are available at the moment. So you can't use rbd directly. Network issues with oVirt 4.2 and cloud-init

oVirt node 4.2.x - custom multipath.conf and external storage availability

HI all How can I provide to my oVirt hosts a custom multipath.conf, considering that we are using shared/mirrored FC storage from HPE 3PAR with high availability of provided LUNs, using peer-persistance feature ? To configure correctly this require a custom multipath.conf is required. How I can avoid it will be overwritten during upgrades ? Second topic: Is ALUA feature supported also in oVirt nodes, like for standard RHEL 6/7 and/or CentOS 6/7 ? I was digging for a while into user's digest, but not able to find focused informations. This is the feature needed by peer-persistance, allowing two different volumes to be masked toward a given host with the same WWN and LUN number. Thanks in advance -- Roberto

Drive letter / scsi id not consistent

Hi, Managing disks in the ovirt gui seems completely error prone since the GUI ordering does not seem to be used in any practical way. The scsi ID's are not exposed via the GUI either, so if you have 2 drives of the same size on NFS there's no way to identify which is which without resorting to dumping the xml. Would anyone have recommends for additional reads? The problem I'm tackling currently looks like this: - We have (2) oVirt Data Centers, each populated by a single Cluster. The Data Centers are physically & network-wise 'distant' from one another - hosted-engine runs on (3) of the (4) Hosts in Data Center A / Cluster A. hosted-engine does not run on Data Center B / Cluster B - When we disrupt network connectivity around Cluster A (yes, that's Cluster *A*), Hosts in Cluster B crash (requiring a power cycle) and Guests in Cluster B get stopped and paused I'm struggling to understand why mussing with Cluster A affects Cluster B. From pcaps, I can see plenty of TLS traffic from Cluster A's Hosts -- presumably from ovirt-engine running on Cluster A -- exchanged with Cluster B. So, during my last maintenance window, I put hosted-engine into maintenance mode ... but Hosts/VMs in Cluster B were still affected. Where do I go to better understand what ovirt-engine does when it is 'managing' Hosts & VMs? --sk

MoM - Not working ? How to use it ?

Hello, I'm trying to test Memory balloon useful functionality, but l'm unable to make it work successfuly. Firstly, I enable the MOM on my Cluster: Memory Balloon Enable Memory Balloon Optimization Secondly, I configure a VM virtual machine like this: On system tab: Memory Size : 28672 MB Maximum memory : 28672 MB On Ressource allocation tab: Memory Allocation: Physical Memory Guaranteed : 2048 MB Memory Balloon Device: Enabled Thirdly, I test 1- I boot the VM. After boot VM consume 200MB 2- I lauch perl program which consume 26GB. 3- During this, Host RAM usage is near 90% 4- I stop the perl program, and on guest side, RAM usage drop down to 200Mo 5- On host side, RAM usage keep to 24 - 26GB. I wait some time to show if the qemu-vm process drop is host-ram-usage. Hi, I recently had to shutdown my oVirt system which contains both the engine and the host. After it came back up, the host was not able to initialize anymore from the oVirt UI. First it kept getting stuck in a loop with setting "ExecutingStarted: Jul 30, 2018, 9:06:21 AMSetting Host pc331 to Non-Operational mode." This was being repeated over and over again. It also gave this error: Host pc331 does not comply with the cluster Default networks, the following networks are missing on host: 'ovirtmgmt' Even though I am using that interface (ovirtmgmt) to access the system and 'ip addr show' shows that it's set up properly. I tried some more things, including upgrading the host, When I do that, the status changes to 'Installing' and later to 'Install Failed'. template disk attribute in version 4 restapi

Hi All, In the restapi of version 3, there is bootable attribute in disk. But in version 4, the bootable attribute is removed from disk. For vm i can get bootable attribute from diskattachment. Data Recovery from snapshot

Hi: With yet another gluster disk failure / gluster collapse, it appears I lost the "main" backing image for one of my vm servers. I have snapshots still in tact (or at least, appear to be), but the main image is gone. The main server process stores a backup at regular intervals in its disk, and that would have been changed data, so it would be in the snapshot rather than the base image. Is there any way to recover this one .tar.gz file from the snapshot with the missing main image? This is a backup of dynamic data, and without it, I will have lost several customers data, some of which cannot be recreated/regenerated. it also appears that my backup (gluster geo-replication) did not work (had crashed a while ago, and has a very old backup of this image). --Jim

Migrating Legacy Hyperconverged Legacy switch type to OVS

Spent the better part of a day trying to figure out how to bridge OVN networks with physical networks, only to later find out that "Attach to physical network" has zero effect in a Legacy cluster... which started me down the rabbit hole of "how do I switch the Default cluster to be OVS" Then, I come up with the bright idea that I'm going to create a new OVS cluster and migrate all the hosts there, well in order to do that you might: 1. Put the Host into maintenance 2. Install to UNDEPLOY the hosted engine 3. Remove the host from the cluster 4. Add the host to the new OVS cluster However this has a nasty bug where the required networks won't ever sync I believe because of some QoS settings (even though I haven't set that), so host is not able to reach gluster storage, and this was not one of the 3 replicas, it was just a client So moving on just to test the waters with another angle, I UNDEPLOY on one of the gluster servers, and then and only then after waiting however long it took to install/undeploy, does it tell me that It can't remove this host from the cluster because it holds gluster volumes......... How in the heck can I migrate what I have on Default to use native OVS? Let's say I started fresh (I'm using oVirt Node 4.2.5) since I have that option....I don't ever recall there being an option to select OVS as the hosted-engine switch type, and it of course sets up the Default cluster for you - which is the one I'm having issues with because it's legacy by default. I work at a company with a massive AD infrastructure. Is there any way to specify a specific OU to search through instead of just providing a top level DN? We use sssd for all our authing needs on our linux machines and would like to do something like below: ldap_user_search_base = OU=Employees,OU=blah users,DC=blah,DC=com enumerate = false When I connect on cli it looks like Ovirt is reaching out and grabbing a ton of info it doesn't really need. It takes on average 40 second to allow me to log in on CLI or UI. This is not an AD issue as we use AD on everything in our labs and have no issues with speed. Direct LUNs and VM Pauses

Hello All, We recently stood up a new Ovirt install backed by an ISCSI SAN and it has been working great, but there are a few quirks I am trying to iron out. We have run into an issue where when we fail-over our SAN (for maintenance, or otherwise) any VM with a Direct LUN gets paused and doesn’t resume. VMs without a direct LUN never paused. Digging through posts on this list and reading some bug reports, it seems like this a known quirk with how Ovirt handles Direct LUNs (it doesn't monitor the LUNs and so it wont resume the VM). To get the VMs to automatically restart I have attached VM leases to them and that seems to work fine, not as nice as a pause and resume, but it minimizes downtime. What I’m trying to understand is why the VMs with Direct LUNs paused, and ones without didn’t. My only speculation is that since the Non-Direct is using LVM on top of ISCSI, that LVM is adding its own layer of timeouts that cause it to mask the outage? My other question is, how can I keep my VMs with Direct LUNs from pausing during short outages? Can I put configurations in my multipath.conf for just the wwids of my Direct LUNs to increase the ‘no_path_retry’ to prevent the VMs from pausing in the first place? I know in general you don’t want to increase the ‘no_path_retry’ because it can cause timeout issues with VDSM and SPM operations (LVM changes, etc). But in the case of a Direct LUN would it cause any problems? Thank you, Ryan

Hosted Engine deploy failed on new HCI build

Latest version of oVirt node 4.2 installed on three hosts. I completed successfully the cockpit gdeploy process to deploy HCI. All of that went well with no errors. I then proceeded to the hosted engine deployment step which eventually failed (log attached). Hello, I try to mount an NFS Data share from a EMC VNXe3200 export. Unfortunately, NFS share cannot be mount, there is permission error. (Indeed, after the same issue on another NFS ISO repo, I’ve change exported directory user/group to 36:36, and O-Virt NFS mount was great). So, I think issue with my VNXe3200 is regarding UID / GID owner on VNXe3200 side. After webex with EMC support, change owner / permission on VNXe side seems not possible / supported. Upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2 failing - SQL Issues

Hi All, I'm still struggling to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2 and the root cause seems to be the SQL upgrade. I installed my 4.1.9 with the engine appliance image and restored a DB to it. adding hosts problems with GlusterFS

Hi, I setup my 3 host HCI cluster and things are going pretty good. I have a few issues though... one of them is that I added two more hosts to the three node cluster to make it a 5 nodes. This seemed to work fine until I went to create bricks. I have 6 x 2 TB disks for use as JBOD in each node. After I added the nodes, I went to the host and storage devices. This looks significantly different that the view on my first 3 hosts. On the two new hosts all my drives sdb - sdg have locks next to them and file system type is multipath__member. Further up the page then I see a UID under the name and description is PERC H710P dm-multipath - no lock next to it. I created a brick on this and it created the lvmpv file system, however when I go to bricks view, there are no bricks. So, did I make a mistake while adding the hosts? is there some way to prevent this dm-multipath configuration? Thanks Bill

Hi, I have my ovirt 4.2 hci cluster up and running, but I have a probably stupid question. During the setup and in the documents it defaults to setting up the engine datastore/volume, a VMstore/volume and a data/volume. What is the Data volume for? I am planning on running VMs on this so I would assume I need VMstore and that's what I will grow on my system. In previous installs you had the opportunity to create the ISO domain, but not now. I can see how to create in the engine UI so that's fine, but I am just wondering what people use the Data volume for as an example. Thanks Bill

Import Netapp snapshot volume into ovirt and start VM from volume snapshot

Hello. I'm trying to implement following backup scenario for my VMs: storage domain is a volume on netapp appliance connected to oVirt cluster via NFS3. Netapp produces its zero copy snapshots of this volume. I want to be able to restore VMs from these snapshots, e.g. Netapp can export snapshot to ovirt as another NFS volume after that I want to be able to import VM or attach VM disks from snapshot volume to VM and start it. As far as I understand it is basic backup|migration scenario when user wants to move VMs from one ovirt DC to another ovirt DC. Right now I cannot import snapshot volume which contains exactly same domain metadata (in dom_dm/ directory) as original volume (which I cannot detach since it hosts disks for running VMs). I tried to rename dom_md/, but with no success in domain import process. Maybe someone in this list uses same scenario for VM backup and can give some advice.

Hosted engine unaviable after storage rebuild

Hello all, My hosted engine does not start up anymore, because the node can't reach the storage. The hosted engine configuration has not been retrieved from shared storage. Please ensure that ovirt-ha-agent is running and the storage server is reachable. What happend is that my NAS crashed and I had to rebuild it from the backup. I'm quit sure that I called all the NFS shares the same way as they bevore the issue. How can I figure out whats the issue with the storage? The logs wheren't realy helpful for me (but may it's me and not the logs to blame) Regards and thanks Sebi

Changing Network Interfaces on host causes bond to go offline

Everytime I try to change assigned Logical networks (add ip addresses, assign a logical network, etc) the bond0 interface winds up going down. I have to do a ifup bond0 from the console, and the engine reconnects. After a lot of digging, I think this is the offending command, but I don't know how to read it or next troubleshooting steps. Anyone want to point me in the right direction? I currently have a NFS server with decent speeds. I get about 200MB/s write and 400+ MB/s read. My single node oVirt host has a mirrored SSD store for my Windows 10 VM, and I have about 3-5 VMs running on the NFS data store. However, VM/s on the NFS datastore are SLOW. They can write to their own disk around 10-50 MB/s. However a VM on the mirrored SSD drives can get 150-250 MB/s transfer speed from the same NFS storage (Through NFS mounts). Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could try to speed up the NFS storage for the VMs? My single node ovirt box has a 1ft Cat6 crossover cable plugged directly into my NFS servers 10GB port. Spice console pixelated noise on display changes

Dear all, We are running the following setup: ovirt-engine host: - CentOS release 7.5.1804 - ovirt-engine-4.1.9.1-1.el7.centos.noarch - spice-html5-0.1.7-1.el7.noarch We have noticed problems with the Spice console. When it opens and displays the information presented by the VM's console it is OK at first. But as soon as any part of the display changes, that part gets replaced by random pixelated noise. For example I open the console of a standard CentOS server. When I type something at the login prompt the text is invisible and random pixels are displayed at the position of the blinking cursor. Please see attached screenshot spice-1-login_typing_and_cursor_waiting.png. Please also see other the attached screenshots. Login prompt after VM reboot: spice-2-login_after_boot.png Login prompt after hitting Enter a few times: spice-3-login_2x_enter.png We have tried and succesfully reproduced the issue on OSX (Chrome, FF, Safari) and Windows (Chrome, FF). Understanding JBOD brick configuration

I'm deploying three host Ovirt HCI and I'm a bit confused about how to configure the glusterFS volumes and bricks in the cockpit. My three hosts are configured the exact same way physically: 2x250GB SSDs in Raid 1 for OS 2 x 2TB SSD in JBOD which I intend to use for Gluster (devices sda and sdb) So on Step 3 (Volumes) of gluster deployment I'm leaving the volumes default (with no arbiter as I want replica 3). So that is creating a volume for Engine, Data and VMstore On step 4 (Bricks) I'm choosing jbod and next is where I'm getting confused. I have to specify the device name and size for each volume. It appears that I have to break up sda and sdb devices here. I have 4 TB total between the two JBOD drives but does that mean I can only specify up to 2TB usable for the data volume (on either sda or sdb) then split the space on the second 2TB drive between engine and vmstore? If so this seems like an awful waste of a 2TB drive for use for only engine and vmstore volumes. With my JBOD configuration of two separate disks per hosts is there any way I can have a data volume use most of that space say 3.5TB and the rest goes to engine/vmstore? It was my understanding that glusterFS would pool all available space together and I could use it however I wanted. Can I achieve this without putting the 2TB disks in to a raid configuraiton? trunked ports

Hi, I setup oVirt a few years back. now that the HCI is real, I am revisiting it. I have deployed with Gluster, and am now moving on to networking. I come from a VMware shop and normally we trunk all the network ports exposing all VLANs to the hosts and place VMs in Portgoups that are tagged with VLANs. I did manage to do this years back but I am struggling to get this to work today. I had pretty limited hardware back then and I thought I installed using vlan tagging and trunked ports, but I don't see any option to do this using the glusterfs and hosted engine setup. Each host has a dual port 10Gb NICs I use one for storage that is connected to my storage network and one for ovirtmgmt. (I need to add another of these for redundancy down the road, but no money for that at the moment) The hosts also have 4 x 1Gb ports. So in lieu of being able to configure vlan tagging to trunked ports on hosted engine deploy, I am considering cabling up a 1 Gb port on each in my management services VLAN and when it is all up and running create another logical network (or several of them as I think these equate to what is a vlan tagged port group in VMware) with the 10Gb NIC backing for VMs. Does that sound reasonable? Or if anyone can point me to any docs that describe how to deploy to a specific VLAN with trunk ports, that would be nice as well as I won't have to actually go to the office and run additional cables. Do you need to format/mount bricks before deploying HCI?

I'm building a 3 host HCI configuration. I have servers configured and latest version of oVirt node 4.2 installed. I'm preparing to run the cockpit hosted engine + glusterFS deploy. Each of my hosts have two SSDs in JBOD /dev/sda and /dev/sdb Currently these drives have not been touched, formatted or mounted. Is this required before continuing with the deploy, or will the deploy script format and mount the drives accordingly? Thanks!
