Add Instance_type option for VM Portal

Dear oVIrt, We are relying on Templates more and more, which is great. Images/templates built using “official” cloud images usually have 1CPU and 1GB of RAM. Using this feature via Administration portal is super, since we can attach Instance_type to template to provide sufficient CPU and RAM, regardless of via UI or using Ansible. Would it be possible to consider adding Instance_Type option to Create New VM options in VM Portal? Haven’t tested yet, but is Instance_type supported via ovirt_vm ansible module, in case of EndUser privileges? iptables with 4.3+?

Hello, I'm working on migrating an existing ovirt setup to a new hosted-engine setup and I've been seeing messages about iptables support being deprecated and slated to be removed. Can I continue using iptables to manage the firewalls on my ovirt hosts if I don't care about allowing ovirt to configure the firewalls? We manage all of our machines with puppet and iptables is deeply integrated into this. It would be non-trivial to migrate to firewalld support. As it stands I already manage the firewall rules for our ovirt hosts with puppet and iptables and have always ignored the "Automatically Configure Firewall" option when adding new hosts. Will this continue to work? Also with hosted engine, I had to cowboy enable firewalld to get the engine installed, but now that I've got a cluster up and running with hosted engine enabled on several hosts, can I just switch back from firewalld to iptables assuming I've got all the correct ports open? Based on my experience - the OVA contains the xml and the actual disk of the hosted engine. Then the deployment starts locally the VM and populates the necessary data in it Once it's over , the deployment shuts down and copies the disk of that local VM, undefines it and then ovirt's ha agents are being configured - so they can mount the shared storage and power up the VM (special tar /OVMF/ file on shared storage has the agent configuration file). So , in the ova there should be a template VM + the xml config (cpus, ram, devices, etc) . I would be surprised if there is something else in it. hosted engine installation on iscsi multipath/mpath device fails

Dear all, since several days i try to install the hosted engine initially to an iscsi multipath device without success. Some information on the environment: - Ovirt Version 4.3.3 - using two 10gbe interfaces as single lacp - bond for the ovirtmgmt interface - using two 10gbe storage interfaces on each hypervisor for iscsi storage -- each storage interface is configured without any lacp bonding or 802.1q tagging, etc (on the switches the vlan is configured; port based vlan) -- each storage interface lives in a serarate vlan were also the iscsi target is available, the iscsi target has 4x10ge interfaces -- so; each storage interface is connected to a iscsi target through a different vlan The documentation here is for me unclear: https://ovirt.org/documentation/self-hosted/chap-Deploying_Self-Hosted_Engi… <https://ovirt.org/documentation/self-hosted/chap-Deploying_Self-Hosted_Engi…> >Note: To specify more than one iSCSI target, you must enable multipathing before deploying the self-hosted engine. This indicates for me that it should be possbile to install the HE directly on the /dev/mapper/mpath device which is availibale when I have prepared the host accordingly before installing the HE (log in to multiple iscsi targets, create proper multipath,conf, etc) - right ? I login to the two iscsi targets and get in sum 8 pathes, 4 from each interface and iscsi target. I have then the mpath device on the hypervisor available and i can mount the mpath device and put (test) data on it. In the cockpit interface the mount can also be activated and is recognized correctly. multipathd -ll and lsblk looks good. Everything seems to be fine. But when I run the "hosted-engine" --deploy, the last option while running the assistant is to enter the iscsi data. So, basically i just want to define my mpath device - when entering the data for one of my iscsi target I can see the 4 pathes of the single target, and when i choose the path where the "lun" is finally available it fails. I think in general this option is not that what i want to have here for using the multipath device. I' m lost - what is the usual way to install the HE on a mutlipath device ? Do I have to change the configuration of the storage interfaces or the iscsi network design? - Are bond interfaces for these iscsi connections mandatory ? Did I missed something obvious ? Can I put in my multipath data into the answerfile somehow to get rid of the last step of the assistant ? Hi Carl, I'd recommend you to avoid DNS & DHCP unless you oVirt infra consistes of hundreds of servers. It is far more reliable to use static IPs + /etc/hosts . As you could 'ssh' to the engine, check the logs - there should be a clue why it failed. Most probably it's related to the DNS/IP used. I think the devs can tell their opinion on Monday. Does Ovirt 4.3.4 have support for NFS 4/4.1/4.2 or pNFS

I have read the archives and the most recent discussion was 5 years ago. So I better ask again. My NAS runs Centos with NFS4.2 (and I am testing Ganesha in another server) Does Ovirt 4.3.4 have support for NFS 4/4.1/4.2 or pNFS Specially version 4.2 due to: Server-Side Copy: NFSv4.2 supports copy_file_range() system call, which allows the NFS client to efficiently copy data without wasting network resources. But this will only happen if the Ovirt (which I know is Centos based) supports NFS 4.2. Not sure If I update the NFS toolset on the Ovirt install, it will break something or worst.

"Actual timezone in guest doesn't match configuration" for Windows VMs since guest agent 4.3

Hi, the oVirt guest agent seems to report DST configuration for the timezone since version 4.3 (of the guest agent). this results in "Actual timezone in guest doesn't match configuration" messages in the UI for windows VMs because the timezone field can't be matched with oVirt configuration anymore (no DST flag). to me this looks like a bug. shall I report it? I know there was a similar thread at the beginning of May, but there was no solution mentioned. Matthias

Hello everyone, I have installed an 'oVirt Engine' by 'yum install ovirt-engine' and the engine runs fine after 'engine-setup'. Update 4.2.8 --> 4.3.5

Hello! We have a 4.2.8 environment with some managed gluster-volumes as storage domains and we want to go up to 4.3.5. How is that procedure especially with the gluster nodes in ovirt that are running 3.12.15? My fear is on the jump to gluster 6. Do the cluster work if the first node (of three) is upgraded? And what about the sequence - first the hypervisors or first gluster nodes? Is there anyone who had done this? Greetings! Christoph Köhler

Power down the VM and reduce the memory a little bit but keep the maximum memory value the same or larger. Then power it up and extend the ram to the same value the VM had. It's a wild guess... So don't expect miracles. Manual Migration not working and Dashboard broken after 4.3.4 update

Hi guys. I have two problems since upgrading from 4.2.x to 4.3.4 First issue is I can no longer manually migrate VM's between hosts, I get an error in the ovirt GUI that says "Could not fetch data needed for VM migrate operation" and nothing gets logged either in my engine.log or my vdsm.log Then the other issue is my Dashboard says the following "Error! Could not fetch dashboard data. Please ensure that data warehouse is properly installed and configured." Hi Abdoul, what I don't get right is what is your setup. Ovirt can have data domains that is where you put the vm disks. That domains can be NFS share, gluster bricks, iscsi san or direct disk. When you say files sharing folders, I can't think of a data domain attached there unless it's a NFS local share. Maybe I'm missing something, but I can see that working. Do you have a data domain in storage? I tend to think you have because otherway you can't create the disks for the vms (which you add when you create the vm) Please, replay to the list too so others can see the thread. Firewalld was deployed in EL7 , because they got plans of getting rid of iptables. With EL8 , we got only emulation of iptables for backward compatibility. Also the integration between NetworkManager.service and firewalld is quite good - which is another reason behind that. Last but not least, in the enterprise almost all systems are with firewalld down and behind hardware-based appliances and keeping the complex filtering away of the systems. Thus firewalld is nice for simple tasks, while complex tasks require nftables ... VM Migrations Failing

I need to migrate running VMs from one host in our cluster to another however the task keeps failing any time I start a migration. There is no host that satisfies current scheduling constraints. See below for details:, The host ovirt-node-production3 did not satisfy internal filter Memory.] (VM: vm2, Source: ovirt-node-production2). I also checked the vdsm.log on the destination host which is showing an error like this. ERROR (jsonrpc/2) [virt.vm] (vmId='f5bb25a8-3176-40b6-b21b-f07ed1089b27') Alias not found for device type balloon during migration at destination host (vm:5562) Does anybody know how to resolve this? The destination host is able to run VMs and I've been able to move a few VMs by shutting down and doing a restart however I'd like to do a live migration if possible.

Edit the VM and go to 'system' tab (on the left). If you don't see it -click on 'show advanced options'. There select Harddisk as 1st device and DVD as second. Then I confided ovirt as well as the iso and data domains. Now the problem, I try to create a VM by setting up the entries and attaching a CD from the iso data center. ISO Upload "Paused by System"

Hi Guys, I tried to upload an ISO, and from "chrome" it's just "paused by system" from the beginning From "Firefox", it started to upload, but after 0.5 hour it becomes "paused by system" too. I suspect it's the certificate issue, but I installed the certificate. [I'm working with Windows 10] Can you please tell me it this is the issue ?and if yes, how can I solve the Cert issue ? Ovirt Hyperconverged Cluster

I am installing ovirt 4.2 on three nodes. I am using centos with ovirt cockpit. My /sdb is my boot disk and /sda is my local storage, When I started the setup with cockpit I selected the sda but the ansible script stay on sdb. I have fix all changing the playbook manually but in the execution the gdeploy tool stay blocked on TASK [Create Physical Volume] . I don't find any logs. How I can fix that?

Dear oVIrt, Happy to report I have deployed my first python vdsm_hook which removes A, AAAA, TXT records of VM each time after_vm_destroy event is triggered, and it works fine. This was required to be able to quickly redploy/rebuild VMs using same hostname. Don't forget to run a ping with a size of 8500 and "do not fragment" flag. This will really prove that you are no longer using the small MTU anywhere on the path. Managed Block Storage

I'm testing out the managed storage to connect to ceph and I have a few questions: * Would I be correct in assuming that the hosted engine VM needs connectivity to the storage and not just the underlying hosts themselves? It seems like the cinderlib client runs from the engine? * Does the ceph config and keyring need to replicated onto each hypervisor/host? * I have managed to do one block operation so far (i've created a volume which is visible on the ceph side), but multiple other operations have failed and are 'running' in the engine task list. Is there any way I can increase debugging to see whats happening?

Storage domain format version info

Hello, part of updating a DC from 4.2 to 4.3 consists in updating format of data storage domains from V4 to V5. Questions: - where can I find list of differences between V4 and V5? And in general between previous ones? - can I force only a particular storage domain to remain in V4 while having the other ones upgraded to V5, for any reason? Or the reverse: update only one of the defined domains? Eg on oVirt web site I only found this for V4 https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/storage/storage_d… with mention about Qcow2 v3 (link broken.. one ot the upstream pages for it here: https://wiki.qemu.org/Features/Qcow3 ) that should give near raw performance with advantages of qcow2 format... Ovirt Secure boot issues

Hello All, I would like to ask any of you to do a simple test. Please install a linux on a VM with Secure boot and after the install wizzard is over -power it off and then on. Here is what I have observed: 1. UEFI forgets the certificates after a poweroff and asks for the openSUSE certificate every time. Rebooting from the VM doesn't cause any problems till nextg boot. 2. RHEL8 grub menu consists only of 'System setup'. When you select it - you are sent to the UEFI menu. If you select continue - everything is fine. Poweroff + Poweron makes everything to repeat. Do you observe the same issues. If I'm not the only one hitting this - I will open a bug, otherwise I will try to further debug this. Best Regards, Strahil Nikolov

Hi there, I have a problem, Last week I lost connectivity a VM with OS Windows server 2008 I access to check it and in ovirtmanager that VM is power on and I could login it, but there was no ping to other VM machines So I restarted VM and I recovery connectivity. Today It shows the same scenario with same VM. I checked log from ovirtmananer and ovirt node from running VM but I didnt find any error. Where can I find out more ? HE deployment failing

Hey! I'm trying to deploy a 3 node cluster with gluster storage. After the gluster deployment is completed successfully, the creation of storage domain fails during HE deployment giving the error: [ ERROR ] fatal: [localhost]: FAILED! => {"changed": false, "msg": "Error: the target storage domain contains only 46.0GiB of available space while a minimum of 61.0GiB is required If you wish to use the current target storage domain by extending it, make sure it contains nothing before adding it."} I have tried to increase the disk size(provided in storage tab) to 90GiB. But the deployment still fails. A 50GiB storage domain is created by default even if some other size is provided. Has anyone faced a similar issue? Regards Parth Dhanjal

Everything ended well - despite the warning 'do not shutdown' I powered off and powered on the VM. This action allowed me to trigger a snapshot deletion (again) and it completed successfully. Removing the disk of interest also completed successfully. So, I got a happy ending. I think I'm getting closer. It seems the snapshot of the VM did not get deleted and that might be the problem. Can someone give me a hint how to remove the snapshot as I get an error: Cannot remove Snapshot. The following disks are in ILLEGAL status: uyuni-OS-Disk1 - please remove them and try again. Yet, removal of the disk cannot happen as I got: Cannot detach Virtual Disk. The disk is already configured in a snapshot. In order to detach it, remove the disk's snapshot. This seems like 'Catch 22' . Hello All, I have changed my system layout and the old disk is removed (echo 1 > /sys/block/sdX/device/delete) from OS, but UI complains when I try to remove with the following error: Error while executing action: Cannot remove Virtual Disk. At least one of the VMs is not down. Is it a limitation of oVirt ? If so, I will open an enhancement entry in bugzilla. Hi oVirters, Did a 4.1 - > 4.2.8 -> 4.3.4 upgrade in two hops. Here is my experience, hope it can save you some pain. Gotchas 1. For shutdown VMs, their disks were deactivated (though still attached) 2. For shutdown VMs, their NICs were "Up" but "Unplugged" 3. VM Custom Compatibility Version is hard to find. (If it is too old say 3.6, 4.1) they won't start up. The location is: VM -> Edit -> System -> Advanced Parameters (click this) "Advanced Parameters" is an expandable widget that is quite small when collapsed. When it is expanded then you will see "Custom Compatibility Version" 4. Storage Domain migration to V5: I use a NFS storoage domain. This is migrated to the "V5" format and a lot of cleanup is done. If you have stray files or images not owned by 36:36 (vdsm:kvm on my NFS server), the V5 upgrade will fail, there will be no SPM, and the Data Center will oscillate between Non-responsive and Contending. Why would there be non 36:36 uid/gid files? This is a long story, but from the older 3.x days when there was less functionality, we would sometimes directly manipulate the filesystem and/or qcow2 images using guestfish or equivalent tools which would change the owner to qemu:qemu. Forgetting to chown back to vdsm:kvm is a recipe for pain. Cheers! -- Richard Chan

Hello there! I'm trying to install an oVirt node(the most stable recent one) on a machine(just in case you didn't figure from the title :P) and anaconda just crashes \o/ I've tried to start anaconda in text mode, but the error is the exact same. Here's a screenshot of the event(text mode, although it shouldn't matter): https://i.imgur.com/ihO1xWP.jpg The only "disk" attached to the machine has no partitions, it's absolutely clean. The machine in question is a PowerEdge M520, if that matters, and I'm trying to install on top of a pair of 32GB mirrored SD cards. I installed CentOS7 on a machine that's virtually the same(they're the exact same, but aren't the same machine) and didn't have any problem. I just have no idea. Never encountered such problem. So any help would be very appreciated. Thanks ^^

I'm having a similar problem. The passtrough needs 2 steps, the first is to attach the host device to the VM, but if you don't enable the spice usb the vm fails to start. I don't know if the USB works straight from the host device or if it depends on the spice console. In my case, a device that work in a windows 10 pc doesn't work in a windows 10 vm. Maybe we both can get help in this matter.
