RESTAPIv3 was deprecated in oVirt 4.0 and it didn't provide access to any new features introduced in oVirt 4. The removal of RESTAPIv3 also means that you cannot use any longer Python/Java SDKv3 or oVirt CLI (all of them were also deprecated since 4.0) with oVirt 4.4. Everyone still using those deprecated libraries/tools need to switch to RESTAPIv4, Python/Java/Ruby/Go SDKv4 or oVirt Ansible modules, which provides access to all upcoming features available in oVirt 4.4 or features provided by previous oVirt 4.y releases. Synology NFS confusion

Hi all, I'm trying to set up a hosted engine on an NFS share provided by a Synology NAS. I've been reading the info and threads regarding the requirement that the share be owned by vdsm:kvm with uid:gid of 36:36, but this seems impossible to set on modern Synology boxes. My understanding of DSM is that the user doesn't have control of the UID and GID of users. You can ssh in and modify /etc/passwd but these files are auto-generated from Synology's own scripts so changes here will not persist across reboots. Is that correct? Secondly, having read lots of posts about permissions and various issues around export settings, why isn't this documented anywhere? There just seems to be lots of contradictory posts. For example, my experience has been: - my Synology vdsm:kvm ids are 1028:65536 - the permissions on the NFS export are 777, anything else gives permissions errors in HE setup - the hosted engine install went fine with these settings. - the nfs-check.py script provided to check the NFS export fails but the installation still completes. So are these issues specific to Synology or is the documentation out there just wrong? #confused Cheers, Shareef.

Storage issues on hosted-engine gluster volume

Dear all, after a switch failure, our three-host oVirt hyperconverged setup has strange issues with the gluster replicate-3 volume that contains the hosted-engine VM. Basically, after a host is properly rebooted (but not always after every reboot, it happens quite randomly), the hosted-engine starts, but it is immediately paused. On the other hosts, it runs perfectly. After some digging in the documentation, I realized that this is due to a storage issue. However, the health of the gluster volume is OK, and forcing heal does not fix the problem. The only solution (or workaround, I would say) is to reset the brick on the faulty host and re-format the brick XFS file system. This leaves me with some questions, which are: Why is the volume health OK, while it is clearly not OK? If so, which commands do I need to use to detect gluster issues? And, why is this situation happening? Any suggestion is appreciated. What if any steps do I need to take prior to adding an additional gluster volume to my HCI cluster using new storage devices via the oVirt gui? Will the gui prepare the devices (xfs/lvm etc) or do I need to do that prior?

Several virtual machines all with the same MAC address ?

Hello, I need to replicate some file servers that must have the same MAC address to work properly and which will be placed on different VLANs to avoid MAC conflicts. With VMware and VirtualBox this is quite simple and works without particular problems but it seems that oVirt does not allow it or I did not find how to proceed. Storage Domain already attached to a Data Center

Hi All, I created a little test environment for myself, just to test a few things. The initial test I wanted to do was to see if I can create a new HE, add it to a different Storage Domain, and then import my existing Storage Domains. Everything went through 100%, except for the little option I forgot to select, and that is to put the original Data Center in maintenance. Now, when I want to import my storage domains, it tells me that the storage domain is already attached to a data center. Is there any way that I can remove this storage domain from my original data center through one of my nodes? I would power up the old HE, but I have powered it off just before deploying a new HE. I am having the same issue with a node as well, so if there is a way to remove the node from the Data Center as well, that would be awesome. Client separation on bridge level

Hello everyone, is there a way to seperate the traffic between VMs on the same bridge on one oVirt-node with built-in tools from ovirt? We have VMs using the same bridge which should never be able to talk to each other. We are currently using ebtables for that, but its not working very good anymore now that we upgraded to 4.3 with firewalld. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Hendrik

Ansible playbook timeout

Version 4.2.8.2-1.0.9.el7 Per the info near the bottom of /usr/share/ovirt-engine/services/ovirt-engine/ovirt-engine.conf I should be able to create this file, /etc/ovirt-engine/engine.conf.d/99-ansible-playbook-timeout.conf and place in the file these contents, ANSIBLE_PLAYBOOK_EXEC_DEFAULT_TIMEOUT=150 and extend the playbook timeout. It doesn't work, still times out after 30 minutes. Any suggested workarounds?

strange error when editing multiple disks

I'm noticing this on 4.3.8 and I don't have understood exactly the raising condition, if UI based or what At first I thought it was the bootable flag, but it is not, apparently vm1 powered on with two disks I select the VM then Disks subtab select line of second disk --> edit --> OK All goes well Then, remaining in the same Disks subtab window I select the line of the first disk --> Edit --> OK And now I get the error window: " Error while executing action: vm1: - Cannot edit Virtual Disk. At least one of the VMs is not down. " ? Then I go and select another powered on VM, vm2, with only one disk, the one with bootable flag, and I'm able to edit it successfully. Then I come back and select vm1 and Disks subtab, select again the first line of the boot disk --> Edit --> OK and I'm able to edit with success..... but eg if I want to modify both alias and description fields I have to do one at a time, otherwise if in the same window I try to modify both and then press OK I still get the error message above. Can anyone verify/test? I was able to reproduce on bot oVirt 4.3.8 and RHV 4.3.8 Gianluca

Image File Owner change Situation. (root:root)

Hello @All, This has happened to us for the first time and only on One VM. I believe it happened with the switch from Fuse to "LibgfApi" in Ovirt. I was using LibgfApiSupported=True on 4.2.8 . I upgraded to 4.3.8 and did NOT restart all of my VMs (30+) but only some VMs, no problem. Eventually I noticed that LibgfApiSupported=False and reset it to True. The VM was Running WindowsServer2016 and we did a Cold-Reboot (not VM Restart). It did not come back online due to "Invalid Volume" which was eventually due to the IMAGEs (Boot and Data) being user:group=root but not the meta,lease or directory. Nor any other VM have/had this problem but they were (if at all) completely stopped and restarted. I am looking for another VM that has not yet been restarted to test this theory. I thought this would be interesting for others looking into this problem. (I will ask my Colleague next week what he means with Cold-Reboot vs Warm-reboot....) Stay Healthy. Updated quota from Default to qstorage for Templates and related images e. Updated quota from Default to qstorage from all existing VMs and the related Disks Problem: * the percentage of the Storage Consumption is jumping up and down, between 3% and 97%, and at certain point goes back to Unlimited * when checking under Storage tab inside quota name, the value “Used MB out of Total MB” is correct, however, when attempting to exceed the threshold, I am not getting a warning, even though I am consumer of a quota Second issue: User is added to qstorage quota as consumer. Still, when he tries to launch the VMs, Waring is displayed: Cannot add VM. The user is not a consumer of the Quota assigned to the resource. Have I missed something – could it be a permission issue, not a consumer issue. All my users are utilizing Administration Portal with limited set of permissions. They all have same Role assigned, but only few of them are having the problem I described as Second problem. Quota usage and exception trigger 2. User assigned as quota consumer First issue: I have defined quota for storage ( qstorage ), setting all following items: * Defining quota for storage, with threshold and grace * Setting quota mode to enforced in datacenter * Added Users as consumers of the Quota * Updated quota from Default to qstorage for Templates and related images * Updated quota from Default to qstorage from all existing VMs and the related Disks Problem: * the percentage of the Storage Consumption is jumping up and down, between 3% and 97%, and at certain point goes back to Unlimited * when checking under Storage tab inside quota name, the value “Used MB out of Total MB” is correct, however, when attempting to exceed the threshold, I am not getting a warning, even though I am consumer of a quota Second issue: User is added to qstorage quota as consumer. Still, when he tries to launch the VMs, Waring is displayed: Cannot add VM. The user is not a consumer of the Quota assigned to the resource. Have I missed something – could it be a permission issue, not a consumer issue. All my users are utilizing Administration Portal with limited set of permissions. They all have same Role assigned, but only few of them are having the problem I described as Second problem. Host after update NonResponsive

Hello to all, I ve done a normal host updadet at the webfrontend. After the reboot the host is NonResponsive. It is a HCI setup with glusterfs But mount shows on this host that only engine is mountet. The data volume is not mounted. Hi, I'm using a nested environment under kvm with cockpit deployment. I was able to pass by the Add VM Phase by starting over with another rhv source image. The NFS shared storage is mapped locally. Everything works fine until the HE is starting on the shared storage but have no connectivity and the ansible script is stopping at checking the health of the HE. When checking the console it looks like the HE goes into a kernel panic. Any suggestions? oVirt Storage quota problems

Dear oVirt, I am experiencing a quota related problem regarding two things: 1. Quota usage and exception trigger 2. User assigned as quota consumer First issue: I have defined quota for storage ( qstorage ), setting all following items: * Defining quota for storage, with threshold and grace * Setting quota mode to enforced in datacenter * Added Users as consumers of the Quota * Updated quota from Default to qstorage for Templates and related images * Updated quota from Default to qstorage from all existing VMs and the related Disks Problem: * the percentage of the Storage Consumption is jumping up and down, between 3% and 97%, and at certain point goes back to Unlimited * when checking under Storage tab inside quota name, the value “Used MB out of Total MB” is correct, however, when attempting to exceed the threshold, I am not getting a warning, even though I am consumer of a quota Second issue: User is added to qstorage quota as consumer. Still, when he tries to launch the VMs, Waring is displayed: Cannot add VM. The user is not a consumer of the Quota assigned to the resource. Have I missed something – could it be a permission issue, not a consumer issue. All my users are utilizing Administration Portal with limited set of permissions. They all have same Role assigned, but only few of them are having the problem I described as Second problem. NFS ISO Domain - Outage ?

Hi Ovirt Mailing-list Hope you are well. We had an outage over several ovirt clusters. It looks like we had the same ISO NFS domain shared to all off them, many of the VM's had a CD attached to it. The NFS server went down for an hour, all hell broke lose when the NFS server went down. Some of the ovirt nodes became "red/unresponssive" on the ovirt dashboard. We learned now to spilt the NFS server for ISO's and/or remove the ISO's when done. Has anyone seen similar issues with an NFS ISO Domain? Is there special options we need to pass to the mount to get around this? Can we put the ISO's somewhere else? Regards Nardus

ETL Service

Hi All, I am having a strange issue. I configured my DWH scale with scales that I would like to report on. I checked this morning, and the last row in my PostgreSQL DB is from the 9th. I checked the logs, and I see that it is referring to an "ETL Service" which I am not familiar with. I have attached the lines in the text document. If anybody could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Re-ip storage

Good afternoon all, We are upgrading our storage backbone, moving it off of our common 1 GBit backbone to a 10 dedicated storage backbone. When this happens, we will need to re-ip the storage domains with to IP address of the 10 GBit release. For a period of time, as we upgrade the rest of our hardware, we may have to operate both the original and the new IP addresses. *Some gotchas:* 1. My controller is at level 4.3, but some of my my compute nodes are at level 4.2 because they have older Penryn class processors. We didn't plan the upgrade - it happened because our controller's hard drive failed and took the cluster with it. *Practical question:* 1. Can I simply operate the same storage domain on two IP addresses on different physical networks eg. 10.10.1.x and 10.10.10.x ? 2. Is an alternative solution to operate two storage domains from the storage appliance, and migrate the storage from the 1GBit domain to the 10 GBit domain over time, then drop/abandon the old storage domain once everything is on the 10 GBit? I have plenty of storage to do this. 3. Is there a better way I haven't thought of? I am planning to host my VM images on backend FreeNAS filer. I am assuming VMs are downloaded and run in the memory of PC running oVirt engine. What would be the way to install all of oVirt on one PC and just store VMs on freeNAS? Also more importantly, what type of HW conifg would that PC need for running a bunch of LAMP VMs?? Thanks. RJ

Upload/download disks through muCommander

Hi all, I want to share with you that a new version of muCommander has been released and this version includes integration with oVirt! A demo of the provided functionality is available at [1]: First, we connect to RHV (but the following process would work the same for oVirt) and browse the content if its storage domain. Then, we take two virtual disk images, one of format=raw and size=3G and second of format=qcow2 and size=2G, and upload them to that storage domain. In the meantime, we download an iso file from the storage domain and explore its content. We check the format and size for the uploaded disks. Lastly, we remove the first disk from within muCommander and see that it also disappears from the storage domain. That can be seen as a front-end of oVirt's Image I/O [2]. However, please be aware of the following limitations: 1. Snapshots are not supported. 2. There is no way to specify the virtual size of the disk. This means it works nicely for preallocated disks and for uploading iso files to data domains (note the filename must end with the '.iso' extension), but thin-provisioned disks would probably need to be extended after the upload. 3. oVirt-specific things like disk description, host to upload the disk to, wipe-after-delete, and others cannot be specified. Help recovering cluster

Hello all, New to the group, apologies for any poor information. I have a home lab with a single host ovirt setup. I actually don't think I ever set it up exactly right, the agent vm was never created, it was running on the host server. But it ran and I had a handful of vm's running on it successfully. I knew I had to rebuild it but was waiting for funds for extra hardware. Then the other day I came home and could no longer access the web portal. Could get to the login page but after entering my auth info it just hangs. I'm honestly not even sure where to start. Does anyone know any good troubleshooting docs? Or any idea what may be happening? I can see the VM images and such in the proper folders so I don't think I have .lost anything. But can't access any of the vm's now. Any help would be appreciated. What if anything can be done to improve small file performance with gluster?

I have 3 server HCI with Gluster replica 3 storage (10GBe and SSD disks). Small file performance inner-vm is pretty terrible compared to a similar spec'ed VM using NFS mount (10GBe network, SSD disk) VM with gluster storage: # dd if=/dev/zero of=test2.img bs=512 count=1000 oflag=dsync 1000+0 records in 1000+0 records out 512000 bytes (512 kB) copied, 53.9616 s, 9.5 kB/s VM with NFS: # dd if=/dev/zero of=test2.img bs=512 count=1000 oflag=dsync 1000+0 records in 1000+0 records out 512000 bytes (512 kB) copied, 2.20059 s, 233 kB/s This is a very big difference, 2 seconds to copy 1000 files on NFS VM VS 53 seconds on the other. Aside from enabling libgfapi is there anything I can tune on the gluster or VM side to improve small file performance? I have seen some guides by Redhat in regards to small file performance but I'm not sure what/if any of it applies to oVirt's implementation of gluster in HCI.

Getting Redhat Yum mirrors issues on some of my network subnet and not on the others

Hi, This is not really an OVirt matter but I'll try my chance if anyone here has already had this kind of issue or could help I've two bare metal servers in two different network subnets with same release version of RHVH/Ovirt. I use an automated script to deploy VMs on both, and provision a docker repository file there on VMs. The issue I'm facing is when I'm trying to query `container-selinux` package. qcow on LVM‽ Why‽

Hi *, I’m a bit frustrated, so please excuse any harshness in this mail. Whose idea was it to place qcow on logical volumes anyway? I was shrinking a hard disc: first the filesystems inside the VM, then the partitions inside the VM, then the LV… then I wanted to convert the LV to a compressed qcow2 file for transport, and it told me that the source is corrupted. Huh? I had already wondered why I was unable to inspect the LV on the host the usual way (kpartx -v -a /dev/VG/LV after finding out, with “virsh --readonly -c qemu:///system domblklist VM_NAME”, which LV is the right one). Turns out that ovirt stores qcow on LVs instead of raw images ☹ Well, vgcfgrestore to my rescue: - vgcfgrestore -l VG_NAME - vgcfgrestore -f /etc/… VG_NAME The image was still marked as corrupted, but exported fine. I could not write it back to the LV as preallocated, which seems to be what ovirt does, because qemu-img doesn’t wish to do that when the target is a special device (not a regular file). Meh. Does ovirt handle raw images on LV, and if so, how can we enable this for new VMs? If not, whyever the hell not? And whose “great” idea was this anyway? Windows deployment

I have a Windows Deployment server that works with Hyper-V. I am tryng to see if it will bare metal provision to Ovirt. I have the necessary drivers loaded and initially it gets an IP and starts the installation. When it comes to the screen starting setup, I get an IP error. I have included a screenshot. Has anyone see this before? I also considered provisioning from Foreman but I would rather use what I have instead of recreating the entire installation. Any help would be appreciated. subnets

I have a network in place with several subnets, one for iscsi and one for virtual pbx and VoIP phones. I use the iscsi in Ovirt, but I cannot get Ovirt to recognize and use the physical vlan 3 network for phones. If I add it and the subnet, Ovirt will make give it an IP, but it's an isolated network with no connectivity to the other vm's or the Internet. I have read several topics on this but I can't get it to work properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Debian 10 template - cloud init not working

Hi, I have tried centos7 & 8, debian 9 and ubuntu 18.04 template based VMs with cloud init (Initial run/use cloud init) and they all work as expected. However, the debian 10 template based VM seems *not* to execute the cloud init at all. It boots but hostname is not set and users / password are not set. You can't log in since there is no users and passwords/keys. Is this a known issue? Or am I missing something? The templates are from ovirt-image-repository storage domain. I have also created newer debian 10.3.0 template via ovirt.image-template ansible role. Results are the same. I am running ovirt 4.4-pre. Thanks, Sakari

Different cpu flags preventing live migration

Hello, I would like to share some problems that I'm finding on an environment based on RHV, but could impact also oVirt based environments. For my problems I'm working on an opened case to understand root cause. I have Dell R730 hypervisors (with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v4 @ 2.40GHz cpu) and some VMs configured for "customized" high performance. In the sense that I configure VM as high performance type and then: - I enable the graphical console (I remove the flag of headless Mode" in Console section); - In Host section I set for "Start Running On" Any Host in Cluster and allow manual and automating migration; - I also set HA in high availability section, accepting default values for leasing, resume behaviour, ecc.. These settings however have the effect to leave enable the flag related to "Pass-Through Host CPU" in Host section. I noticed that with same Bios, ecc with kernel in 4.3.8 (that seems equal between oVirt and RHV): [g.cecchi@ov200 ~]$ uname -r 3.10.0-1062.12.1.el7.x86_64 [g.cecchi@ov200 ~]$ I have this cpu flag set: invpcid_single Instead on the same host in 4.3.5 (eg kernel 3.10.0-1062.el7.x86_64) the flag is not set. This creates problem during upgrade from 4.3.5 to 4.3.8 because initially I empty one host and update it, but then I cannot live migrate back the VMs to update the other one, due to the pass-through flag set, that requires exact set of flags. So crosscheck on a test environment in case you have the "Pass-Through Host CPU" set in Host section for any critical VM you cannot shutdown. BTW: the flag is somehow tricky to remove if you set the VM as High Performance type; you have to: edit VM --> Host Start Running On --> change to select a specific host among the available ones Now you can remove the "Pass-Through Host CPU" flag --> remove it Start Running On --> change again to "Any Host in Cluster" Save Now you can live migrate this "customized" High Performance VM But the problem is that if the VM is running, you have to shutdown it to get the change in effect.
