Re-ip storage

Good afternoon all, We are upgrading our storage backbone, moving it off of our common 1 GBit backbone to a 10 dedicated storage backbone. When this happens, we will need to re-ip the storage domains with to IP address of the 10 GBit release. For a period of time, as we upgrade the rest of our hardware, we may have to operate both the original and the new IP addresses. *Some gotchas:* 1. My controller is at level 4.3, but some of my my compute nodes are at level 4.2 because they have older Penryn class processors. We didn't plan the upgrade - it happened because our controller's hard drive failed and took the cluster with it. *Practical question:* 1. Can I simply operate the same storage domain on two IP addresses on different physical networks eg. 10.10.1.x and 10.10.10.x ? 2. Is an alternative solution to operate two storage domains from the storage appliance, and migrate the storage from the 1GBit domain to the 10 GBit domain over time, then drop/abandon the old storage domain once everything is on the 10 GBit? I have plenty of storage to do this. 3. Is there a better way I haven't thought of? I am planning to host my VM images on backend FreeNAS filer. I am assuming VMs are downloaded and run in the memory of PC running oVirt engine. What would be the way to install all of oVirt on one PC and just store VMs on freeNAS? Also more importantly, what type of HW conifg would that PC need for running a bunch of LAMP VMs?? Thanks. RJ

Upload/download disks through muCommander

Hi all, I want to share with you that a new version of muCommander has been released and this version includes integration with oVirt! A demo of the provided functionality is available at [1]: First, we connect to RHV (but the following process would work the same for oVirt) and browse the content if its storage domain. Then, we take two virtual disk images, one of format=raw and size=3G and second of format=qcow2 and size=2G, and upload them to that storage domain. In the meantime, we download an iso file from the storage domain and explore its content. We check the format and size for the uploaded disks. Lastly, we remove the first disk from within muCommander and see that it also disappears from the storage domain. That can be seen as a front-end of oVirt's Image I/O [2]. However, please be aware of the following limitations: 1. Snapshots are not supported. 2. There is no way to specify the virtual size of the disk. This means it works nicely for preallocated disks and for uploading iso files to data domains (note the filename must end with the '.iso' extension), but thin-provisioned disks would probably need to be extended after the upload. 3. oVirt-specific things like disk description, host to upload the disk to, wipe-after-delete, and others cannot be specified. Help recovering cluster

Hello all, New to the group, apologies for any poor information. I have a home lab with a single host ovirt setup. I actually don't think I ever set it up exactly right, the agent vm was never created, it was running on the host server. But it ran and I had a handful of vm's running on it successfully. I knew I had to rebuild it but was waiting for funds for extra hardware. Then the other day I came home and could no longer access the web portal. Could get to the login page but after entering my auth info it just hangs. I'm honestly not even sure where to start. Does anyone know any good troubleshooting docs? Or any idea what may be happening? I can see the VM images and such in the proper folders so I don't think I have .lost anything. But can't access any of the vm's now. Any help would be appreciated. I have 3 server HCI with Gluster replica 3 storage (10GBe and SSD disks). Small file performance inner-vm is pretty terrible compared to a similar spec'ed VM using NFS mount (10GBe network, SSD disk) VM with gluster storage: # dd if=/dev/zero of=test2.img bs=512 count=1000 oflag=dsync 1000+0 records in 1000+0 records out 512000 bytes (512 kB) copied, 53.9616 s, 9.5 kB/s VM with NFS: # dd if=/dev/zero of=test2.img bs=512 count=1000 oflag=dsync 1000+0 records in 1000+0 records out 512000 bytes (512 kB) copied, 2.20059 s, 233 kB/s This is a very big difference, 2 seconds to copy 1000 files on NFS VM VS 53 seconds on the other. Aside from enabling libgfapi is there anything I can tune on the gluster or VM side to improve small file performance? I have seen some guides by Redhat in regards to small file performance but I'm not sure what/if any of it applies to oVirt's implementation of gluster in HCI.

qcow on LVM‽ Why‽

Hi *, I’m a bit frustrated, so please excuse any harshness in this mail. Whose idea was it to place qcow on logical volumes anyway? I was shrinking a hard disc: first the filesystems inside the VM, then the partitions inside the VM, then the LV… then I wanted to convert the LV to a compressed qcow2 file for transport, and it told me that the source is corrupted. Huh? I had already wondered why I was unable to inspect the LV on the host the usual way (kpartx -v -a /dev/VG/LV after finding out, with “virsh --readonly -c qemu:///system domblklist VM_NAME”, which LV is the right one). Turns out that ovirt stores qcow on LVs instead of raw images ☹ Well, vgcfgrestore to my rescue: - vgcfgrestore -l VG_NAME - vgcfgrestore -f /etc/… VG_NAME The image was still marked as corrupted, but exported fine. I could not write it back to the LV as preallocated, which seems to be what ovirt does, because qemu-img doesn’t wish to do that when the target is a special device (not a regular file). Meh. Does ovirt handle raw images on LV, and if so, how can we enable this for new VMs? If not, whyever the hell not? And whose “great” idea was this anyway? Windows deployment

I have a Windows Deployment server that works with Hyper-V. I am tryng to see if it will bare metal provision to Ovirt. I have the necessary drivers loaded and initially it gets an IP and starts the installation. When it comes to the screen starting setup, I get an IP error. I have included a screenshot. Has anyone see this before? I also considered provisioning from Foreman but I would rather use what I have instead of recreating the entire installation. Any help would be appreciated. subnets

I have a network in place with several subnets, one for iscsi and one for virtual pbx and VoIP phones. I use the iscsi in Ovirt, but I cannot get Ovirt to recognize and use the physical vlan 3 network for phones. If I add it and the subnet, Ovirt will make give it an IP, but it's an isolated network with no connectivity to the other vm's or the Internet. I have read several topics on this but I can't get it to work properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Debian 10 template - cloud init not working

Hi, I have tried centos7 & 8, debian 9 and ubuntu 18.04 template based VMs with cloud init (Initial run/use cloud init) and they all work as expected. However, the debian 10 template based VM seems *not* to execute the cloud init at all. It boots but hostname is not set and users / password are not set. You can't log in since there is no users and passwords/keys. Is this a known issue? Or am I missing something? The templates are from ovirt-image-repository storage domain. I have also created newer debian 10.3.0 template via ovirt.image-template ansible role. Results are the same. I am running ovirt 4.4-pre. Thanks, Sakari

Hello, I would like to share some problems that I'm finding on an environment based on RHV, but could impact also oVirt based environments. For my problems I'm working on an opened case to understand root cause. I have Dell R730 hypervisors (with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v4 @ 2.40GHz cpu) and some VMs configured for "customized" high performance. In the sense that I configure VM as high performance type and then: - I enable the graphical console (I remove the flag of headless Mode" in Console section); - In Host section I set for "Start Running On" Any Host in Cluster and allow manual and automating migration; - I also set HA in high availability section, accepting default values for leasing, resume behaviour, ecc.. These settings however have the effect to leave enable the flag related to "Pass-Through Host CPU" in Host section. I noticed that with same Bios, ecc with kernel in 4.3.8 (that seems equal between oVirt and RHV): [g.cecchi@ov200 ~]$ uname -r 3.10.0-1062.12.1.el7.x86_64 [g.cecchi@ov200 ~]$ I have this cpu flag set: invpcid_single Instead on the same host in 4.3.5 (eg kernel 3.10.0-1062.el7.x86_64) the flag is not set. This creates problem during upgrade from 4.3.5 to 4.3.8 because initially I empty one host and update it, but then I cannot live migrate back the VMs to update the other one, due to the pass-through flag set, that requires exact set of flags. So crosscheck on a test environment in case you have the "Pass-Through Host CPU" set in Host section for any critical VM you cannot shutdown. BTW: the flag is somehow tricky to remove if you set the VM as High Performance type; you have to: edit VM --> Host Start Running On --> change to select a specific host among the available ones Now you can remove the "Pass-Through Host CPU" flag --> remove it Start Running On --> change again to "Any Host in Cluster" Save Now you can live migrate this "customized" High Performance VM But the problem is that if the VM is running, you have to shutdown it to get the change in effect. Hi Marko, I guess you can use distributed-replicated volumes and oVirt cluster with host triplets. 1-Host home setup question

Hey folks, for a home-vm setup (1 host): If I setup the Hardware with CentOS7, configure Gluster et all by hand and get things up and running this way: Would it be a viable option to install the ovirt engine directly on the host as well? This would save some overhead. Or is running ovirt engine directly inside an ovirt host, even using CentOS (not the node) not recommended and will break things? -- with kind regards, mit freundlichen Gruessen, Christian Reiss
