OVA import fails always

Hi, I'm running 4.3.8.2-1.el7 (just updated engine to see if it helps) and I haven't been able to import vms in OVA format, I've tried many appliances downloaded from the web but couldn't get them to work. Any hints? Regards

Different cpu flags preventing live migration

Hello, I would like to share some problems that I'm finding on an environment based on RHV, but could impact also oVirt based environments. For my problems I'm working on an opened case to understand root cause. I have Dell R730 hypervisors (with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v4 @ 2.40GHz cpu) and some VMs configured for "customized" high performance. In the sense that I configure VM as high performance type and then: - I enable the graphical console (I remove the flag of headless Mode" in Console section); - In Host section I set for "Start Running On" Any Host in Cluster and allow manual and automating migration; - I also set HA in high availability section, accepting default values for leasing, resume behaviour, ecc.. These settings however have the effect to leave enable the flag related to "Pass-Through Host CPU" in Host section. I noticed that with same Bios, ecc with kernel in 4.3.8 (that seems equal between oVirt and RHV): [g.cecchi@ov200 ~]$ uname -r 3.10.0-1062.12.1.el7.x86_64 [g.cecchi@ov200 ~]$ I have this cpu flag set: invpcid_single Instead on the same host in 4.3.5 (eg kernel 3.10.0-1062.el7.x86_64) the flag is not set. This creates problem during upgrade from 4.3.5 to 4.3.8 because initially I empty one host and update it, but then I cannot live migrate back the VMs to update the other one, due to the pass-through flag set, that requires exact set of flags. So crosscheck on a test environment in case you have the "Pass-Through Host CPU" set in Host section for any critical VM you cannot shutdown. BTW: the flag is somehow tricky to remove if you set the VM as High Performance type; you have to: edit VM --> Host Start Running On --> change to select a specific host among the available ones Now you can remove the "Pass-Through Host CPU" flag --> remove it Start Running On --> change again to "Any Host in Cluster" Save Now you can live migrate this "customized" High Performance VM But the problem is that if the VM is running, you have to shutdown it to get the change in effect. 1-Host home setup question

Hey folks, for a home-vm setup (1 host): If I setup the Hardware with CentOS7, configure Gluster et all by hand and get things up and running this way: Would it be a viable option to install the ovirt engine directly on the host as well? This would save some overhead. Hello, suppose in a .py using sdk I have my_var1 = 'prefix' then in the workflow I get at runtime another my_var2 that for example has the attribute my_var2.name that equals "suffix" Then I want to define a new variable my_var3 with value "prefix_suffix", where the string "suffix" is known only at runtime, how can I get it? my_var3 = ??? Can I use something similar to what I do when using the print function? print ("My storage domain is %s..." % sd.name) ? Thanks, Gianluca

oVirt Python SDK and monitor export as OVA task

Hello, sometimes I have environments (typically with Oracle RDBMS on virtual machines) where there is one boot disk and one (often big, such as 500Gb or more) data disk. The data disk has already its application backup (typically RMAN) and I want to complement it with a backup of only the boot disk of the operating system and VM configuration. I'm almost done completing a script using oVirt Python SDK and sharing for comments. I could be wrong, but I didn't find any ansible module to do this with Ansible playbooks: I can only save all the VM, that in my case wouldn't be necessary and instead time and storage wasting. The basic steps are: - make a snapshot of the target vm, composed only by the boot disk - clone the snapshot - export the clone as OVA - delete clone - delete snapshot There are some things to discuss about, probably when I will share the overall job (such as the name to give to the boot disk, if not using the bootable flag, the way to import the OVA in case of actual need, where you will have to comment out some fs entries related to missing disks, ecc.). The only thing missing is how to monitor the export to ova task that, as with Ansible, it completes almost immediately, while the export is actually altready running. I need to monitor it, so only at its real end I can run the last 2 steps of the above list of tasks. Can you give me any hint? Not found very much in guide or docs on the web. I'm currently using a sleep because my boot disk is about 20Gb in size and I know that in less than 2 minutes it normally completes. The export as ova is very similar to what found in the examples and they don't contain a monitor for it but only the connection.close() call: cloned_vm_service.export_to_path_on_host( host=types.Host(id=host.id), directory = export_as_ova_dir, filename = cloned_vm.name + '.ova' ) Thanks in advance, Gianluca

EqualLogic SAN controller switchover

How well does oVirt handle an EqualLogic SAN controller switchover event? IIRC that can result in a short iSCSI "pause" (can't remember how long it takes) - I'm not sure what oVirt's threshold before VMs (including the hosted engine) get paused for storage timeouts. I've got a small setup where the active SAN controller's battery has gone bad, so I need to switch to the other controller, and I'm trying to figure out the impact - do I need to shut all VMs (including the engine) down first, will they just briefly pause and then continue, etc. -- Chris Adams <cma(a)cmadams.net>

oVirt 4.3.8 ovn vms doesn't ping

All seems ok from a configuration point of view, but if I use OVN based interfaces on two VMs, they are not able to ping, both if I put them on the same host and if I put on different hosts. At this point they are both running on the same host and their only vnic is on ovn172 network (defined as 192.168.172.0/24). oVirt 4.3.8 and almost unpredictable export as ova duration

Hello, on a test oVirt environment I have export as ova task that, based on same disk size (20Gb) it could last 35 seconds or 11 minutes.... During the long lasting test I see on host that almost all and only I/O (in the measure of 6-7 MB/s) is done by a [loop0] process that has ppid 2 and apparently (with "fuser" command on /dev/loop0 file) is uses by noone. Is it implicitly used by the "qemu-img convert " command of the export as ova? Why so great difference in elapsed time? The disk is the same of the same VM. The oVirt env has almost nothing running only 2 CentOS 8.1 VMs doing nothing. Same host used for export as ova in the two runs in a 20 minutes timeframe. As the path for OVA I'm temporarily using a connected export domain subdirectory, using directory='/rhev/data-center/mnt/10.4.192.69:_export_ovirt/dump' Donna if it can have a role in the problem... Hi, no, fortunately, the bug didn't came back. It looks like, that the engine needs its time to settle after changing the cluster compatibility version. After about 2 hours, the CPU load was as low as before. The time to load the VM UI takes a little bit more time, but I think this is also normal, because all VMs still have the orange triangle and need a reboot. After upgrading the cluster compatibility version from 4.2 to 4.3, I have seen a huge increase of CPU load on the engine VM. The engine had 4 cores (16GB mem) and never had load issues, but after the upgrade, the system has a load of 6 and more. I have increased the CPUs to 8, because working in the UI was impossible. I have noticed, that the load always increase, when I load the VM UI tab, where now all VMs have the orange triangle with pending changes: Custom compatibility version The problem I have, is, that I can't reboot now all VMs, maybe in the next 3 or 4 weeks. Working now with the UI is quite problematic, because of the slowness. The engine VM was already rebooted, but didn't solve the problem. What logs do you need and is there a workaround available? Dear oVirt, My platform is running SHE oVirt version 4.3.8. Why is my StorageQuota consumption still showing “ 0 out of 3700” ? Did I forget something? Storage performance comparison (gluster vs FC)

Hi, We currently use oVirt on two hosts that connect to a shared storage using SAS. In oVirt this is a "FC" storage domain. Since the warrantly on the storage box is ending, we are looking at alternatives. One of the options would be to use gluster and use a "hyperconverged" setup where compute and gluster are on the same hosts. We would probably end up with 3 hosts and a "replica 3 arbiter 1" gluster volume. (Or is another volume type more recommended for this type of setup?) I was wondering what the expected performance would be of this type of setup compared to a shared storage over FC. I expect the I/O latency of gluster to be much higher than the latency for the SAS connected storage box? Has anybody compared these storage setups? Hello, I'm registering problems with spice console session that remains stuck and not working after vm migration. Tried with 7.6 and 8.1 based virtual machines. The client is an updated Fedora 31 system. Using lsof -Pp pid command I don't see any tcp sessione opened Making the same when session is connected before migration: remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 21u IPv4 243582 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35218->10.4.192.32:5902 (ESTABLISHED) remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 22u IPv4 248960 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35226->10.4.192.32:5902 (ESTABLISHED) remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 23u IPv4 248961 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35228->10.4.192.32:5902 (ESTABLISHED) remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 24u IPv4 248962 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35230->10.4.192.32:5902 (ESTABLISHED) Right after migration I see only the close wait of the previous but not a new one with the ip of the destination host: remote-vi 8013 g.cecchi 21u IPv4 243582 0t0 TCP localhost.localdomain:35218->10.4.192.32:5902 (CLOSE_WAIT) And after a few seconds none. Also, closing the blocked spice window doesn't work: it becomes gray with in the middle "Waiting for display 1..." and I have to "kill -9 the remote-viewer process. Strangely the reverse works. After force closing spice console and connecting to the remote and making migrate reverse, the spice console session keeps working... As you are replacing an old brick, you have to recreate the old LV and mount it on the same location. Then you can use the gluster's "reset-brick" (i thing ovirt UI has that option too) and all data will be replicated there. You got also the "replace-brick" option if you decided to change the mount location. P.S.: with replica volumes your volume should be still working, in case it has stopped - you have to investigate before proceeding. I'm a bit confused about adding a second network provider. If I understand it correctly, I have to add it on a host and then import it? Is that correct or am I miss reading it. Please enlighten me. Thanks.

HostedEngine Upgrade and Rollback

Hi Everyone, Our HostedEngine is previously running in version 4.3.7 then updated it to 4.3.8. Before the update, we did a full backup of the HE. After a successful update, we're testing to roll it back to the previous backup. The cluster setting has been rolled back but the Hosted version is still 4.3.8. Is there a best way to rollback a HostedEngine after a successful minor update? I've read somewhere that if an upgrade / update is unsuccessful, HostedEngine will be rolled back to the previous version automatically. Thanks in advance.

Ovirt ansible snapshots, specify disk to snap

Is there a way to specify only certain disks to snapshot using the ansible playbooks? We have servers with hostname_disk0 and hostname_disk1. And i just want to create snapshots with the OS disk which is always hostname_disk0. Thanks in advance. Tom

oVirt ansible backup improvements

If anyone has been following along, I had previously shared a blog post and GitHub repo regarding my unofficial solution for backing up oVirt VMs using Ansible. Martin Necas reached out to me and we collaborated on some great improvements. Namely, it is now possible to run the playbook from any host without requiring direct access to storage (which I was previously using for export status verification). There were several other improvements and cleanups made as well. Hello, I'm interested by installing okd on ovirt with the official openshift installer (https://github.com/openshift/installer) but ovirt is not yet supported. Dashboard very slow to load: change default page possible?

Hi, I'm noticing that after upgrading to 4.3.8, sometimes the dashboard is very slow and it takes minutes to display and to let me work, even if I'm not interested at all to the dashboard for the activities I have to do. As a consequence it becomes a bottleneck. On engine I see that during these moments the postmaster process related to ovirt_engine_history database is 100% cpu consuming. Almost every minor update I run vacuum but I don't know if there is something else involved. Is there any bug open with in in 4.3.8? Is there any option to set another page as the landing one when I open web admin portal? I have similar problem on a RHV environment where I have done upgrade form 4.2.7 to 4.2.8 and then 4.3.8 in the same day (eventually I'm going to open a case fir this one). When passing from 4.2.7 to 4.2.8 I chose full vacuum for the engine history database: Perform full vacuum on the oVirt engine history database ovirt_engine_history@localhost? This operation may take a while depending on this setup health and the configuration of the db vacuum process.
