set up ovirt 4.2 hyperconverged with glusterfs "storage network" over infiniband

Hi All! I'm try to set up last ovirt version : ovirt-release42-pre.rpm repository (because bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1637468 , for example - it's not fixed in release42 stable) Then, I install these (and many deps) rpms: ovirt-hosted-engine-setup-2.2.30-1.el7.noarch ovirt-engine-appliance-4.2-20181026.1.el7.noarch vdsm-4.20.43-1.el7.x86_64 vdsm-gluster-4.20.43-1.el7.x86_64 vdsm-network-4.20.43-1.el7.x86_64 All from that repository, and use webui installer for create glusterfs volumes (default suggested engine, data, vmstore) and then install hosted engine on that "engine" volume. But in my case i try to setup additional "storage network" (for example, as described there: https://ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/gluster/select-networ… ) These screenshots are too old, and in 4.2 UI changed as I see, but idea are same. I have two interface on each host: one ethernet (enp59s0f0 with address from 172.16.10.0/24 with default gateway) and one "Infiniband" (no default gateway, only between cluster nodes, no routing, no external access). Where is a webui place when I can configure that i want to use "storage network" ? I try to create second network (network->networks->new), but vdsm overwrite the ifcfg-ib0 file without that properties, as it is "like ethernet" interface: Generated by VDSM version 4.20.43-1.el7 DEVICE=ib0 ONBOOT=yes IPADDR=172.16.100.5 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 BOOTPROTO=none MTU=65520 DEFROUTE=no NM_CONTROLLED=no IPV6INIT=no MTU i entered by hand in General->MTU-Custom field, but: It cannot be set without "CONNECTED_MODE=yes" property, and now in networks->"storage"->hosts it always show as "out-of-sync". "Custom properties" are greyed and not available. 2. If I use checkbox "VM network" when create network and then "setup host networks" with this network for ib0 interface - all engine hangs. I think it's because it try to bridge infiniband interface with other, and that cannot done (i see only "1 task running" that never ends and no other interface can show any details) 3. Gluster volumes are in strange state: I "import domain" (storage->domains) that webui installer created on first step, but in "host to use" there is a drop-down list contains only host names as it added to cluster, i.e. ovirtnode1, ovirtnode{N}. Starting local bricks. What does it mean? If "quorum REGAINED" that all bricks must be started, isn't it? When i try to create volume (storage->volumes->new), press "add bricks" - there is a similar drop-down box "Bricks Host" contains only "ovirtnode" names, not "ovirtstor" ib interfaces.. If I try to use it - It cannot finished with error like "This host not in trusted pool", its true - in trusted tool there is other interface. What the right way to configure this? Are there a "some start guide" for this case with config-steps? I found https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/quickstart/quickstart-guide/ but it also out-of-date, for example it not describe GlusterFS for storage domains, has old screenshots (previous interface version), etc... I cannot find any documentation in https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/ For example, https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/chap-Logical_Networks/ Explanation of Settings in the Manage Networks Window does not contain role "Gluster network" at all... Many links point to not-existent pages, for example "For more information on these parameters, see Explanation of bridge opts Parameters." link to https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/chap-Logical_Networks/Expla… that "404 Not found :( Sorry, but the page you were trying to view does not exist." Import VM from VMware fails

Hi, I configured a VMware Provider (Test success) and tried to import a VM which fails shortly after starting. Hello, we are looking to expand our oVirt system, at present we use HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 servers but are considering using Broadberry TN200B7108-X4L Multi Node Servers. I was wondering if anyone had experience of using them, they are quad-node systems and I assume we can use them as 4 oVirt nodes. Thanks, Paul S.

Good day all, Is there a simple step-by-step instruction to give my cluster controller the ability to turn the power for my compute nodes on and off? I am running ovirt 4.7.2 on Centos 7. My compute nodes are on Supermicro X7QC3 hosts. I know it is supposed to be there since every time I look at the dashbaord it complains that "Host has disabled power management". I imagine it is supposed to be trivial to configure. What I keep running into with the documents is the assumption that you already know what to do before you read the documents. This makes for a dizzy cycle of digging through various feature documents, manuals, etc, to end up back where I started. Any assistance would be appreciated. Foreman integration / CDRom boot ?

Hello everybody, Is there a way to make work Foreman/OVirt provisioning integration without use of DHCP ? I explain: On some of my networks, I don't want to use DHCP for provisioning, so I want to provision Foreman / OVirt VM with CDRom tool, After some research, bootdisk plugin seem mandatory: https://github.com/theforeman/foreman_bootdisk. I've install it succesfully, but I can't provision VM with Boot disk based Provisioning Method ( UI > Create Host > Operating System). Is it possible to boot a Foreman / OVirt VM to CDRom ? (or Network Based with DHCP is mandatory for provisioning ?) Regards,

Involuntary emergency upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2

I'm looking for a hand in recovering my ovirt cluster from a hardware failure. The hard drive on my cluster controller failed, and I would like to recover from backup. The problem is, the cluster was 4.1, which is less than a year old, but was nevertheless removed from the active repositories back in May. 4.2 will not recover from 4.1 backups. The storage domains are all intact (I think), and the hosts are still running (unmanaged). I've tried to manually restore the engine from backups, but either the upgrade is reinitializing or I am missing something. Any ideas?

Hi all Running RHV 4.1.10 with AD integration (ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap), I'd like to prevent disabled users from appearing in the Users or Permissions tab. In addition, I'd like to exclude "example.com/PROD/Users/Admin" from being searched for the above, is that possible? oVirt deployment with GlusterFS with replica 3 arbiter 1

Hello community, I am planing to deploy a lab with oVirt and I would like to know if the design in my mind has any flaws. Current plan is to deploy oVirt on 2 workstations with 24GB of RAM and 8 threads each while the 3rd machine will be a VM in a public Cloud and will be used for GlusterFS arbiter. Is it a problem if the arbiter is a vanilla CentOS 7 . I am affraid that oVirt will require all GlusterFS nodes to be also oVirt Hosts, but the VM will lack the necessary resources and I would like to not use that 3rd system. Is this idea possible ? iSCSI Boot from SAN

Hi, I'm setting up a lab with oVirt 4.2. All hosts are disk-less and boot from a NetApp using iSCSI. All storage domains are also iSCSI, to the same NetApp as BFS. Whenever I put a host into maintenance vdsm seems to try to un-mount all iSCSI partitions including the OS partition, causing the host fail. Is this a supported configuration? Thanks, Alan

Desktops as Nodes and Client?

Hi, I'm starting to look at oVirt to help with a datacentre consolidation project to drastically reduce the number of physical servers and it seems like a great fit. As an added bonus, it looks like it might help solve some desktop management challenges we have. Since the desktop PCs are reasonably powerful, what I would ideally like is for them to be nodes, each capable of running a single templated VM accessed by the local user. I can only seem to find documentation relating to standard VDI, i.e thin clients and fat servers. As I'm trying to reduce the number of servers, this is not ideal. Does anyone know of a similar setup or can provide some pointers? Thanks

I ran the command $ ovirt-engine-extensions-tool --log-level=FINEST aaa login-user --user-name=admin --profile=ldap.cyber-range.lan --password=pass:mypassword and replaced mypassword with the actual password for the admin user. How to test incremental backup

Hello, based on this: https://ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/storage/incremental-b… how can I made an initial test run? Which version of hypervisor? Am I forced to test with RHEL 7.6 beta right now, or are there ovirt-node-ng master images available with the features? Which version of oVirt to use to try? No data after update

Hi all! Let me explain this step by step. Today I found out that certificates on engine expired (oVirt 3.3.1). I had trouble renewing them. After some investigation I found out that since version 3.5.4 certificates are renewed with engine-setup. All was ok when I updated (version by version) to version 3.5 (certs still not updated) but since my engine was running on FC19 I had to update to FC20 to continue update to desired version 3.5.4. Fedora updated, yum updated engine-setup. After engine-setup (certificates were updated!) I could login to oVirt webadmin, but... All data gone! No data center, no hosts, no VMs... It's all blank. Like I installed it from scratch. I used psql to check and data is in database. So what could be wrong? Help, please help! Thank you all! BR

Open UDS and Ovirt

Hi Team, I come across one interesting article: https://www.udsenterprise.com/en/blog/2018/05/24/uds-enterprise-supports-ov… which talks about the integration of UDS with Ovirt. My question is as a default ovirt provides the way to create the VM and take the console of it using virt-viewer then why we need the open UDS to be integrated with ovirt? Am I missing something? High frequency of getVolumeSize()

Hi, we observed high count of getVolumeSize() calls in vdsm.log Looking at the logs it seems as if this is done every minute for all disk that are currently running on a node. data(Master) storage domain is inactive / Failed to Reconstruct Master Domain

Hi all, After a power outage, I face a big issue with my setup: -Under "Compute ===> Data Centers" by Default DC status is "Non responsive" -Under "Compute ===>Data Centers ===> Default" all my storage domain are inactive even the Data (Master). Both of by storage domaine ISO and Data(master) are NFS based. The NFS node is up and running and oVirt file on the mount are accessible. log: -Failed to activate Storage Domain nas01-data2 (Data Center Default) by admin@internal-authz -Failed to Reconstruct Master Domain for Data Center Default. The result is that I can't start any of my VM. For you information, I have 23 VM running in this setup so wiping everything is not an option. Any idea how I can restore the storage domain? Force VM delete API

Hi Team, I have a VM which is moved to Image locked state in ovirt, I am not able to remove this VM from ovirt, So Is there a way to perform force delete of VM using ovirt API? Automated VM rollout

Hi! We are developing a tool for automated vm rollouts and struggle with the disk ordering which seems to be completly random? ie. when creating a vm with 3 disks the order on the virtio scsi bus is different each time - which of course causes troubles when executing the next steps. Thanks for any hints on this!

VM paused then killed with "device vda reported I/O error"

Hi, related (or maybe not) with my problem "VMs unexpectidly restarted", I have one VM (only one) which was paused then killed this morning (1:01AM). This is the second time (first time about 15 days ago), only this one (it is on a domain with 5 others VMs, and it is not the most used of them. And it was at night, without any particular treatment at this time). The others VMs on the same storage were not impacted at all. And it is not on the same storage domain as the other VM of "VMs unexpectidly restarted"... At the same time, gluster seems to have seen absolutly nothing. Is there really a storage issue ?? Here are some revelant logs /var/log/messages of the node vdsm.log engine.log glusterd.log data01-brick.log For recall, this is a 3 nodes 4.2.3 cluster, on Gluster 3.12.13 (2+arbiter).
