Poor guest write speeds

I have two Western Digital WD20EZRX drives in a hardware RAID1 configuration. My storage is actually on the single server, but I am attaching to it via NFS. I created a Windows 7 guest, and I am finding its write speeds to be horrible. It is a VirtIO-SCSI drive and the guest additions are installed. The installation of the OS took way longer than bare metal or even VMware. When I ran Windows updates, it again took a *lot* longer than on bar metal or on VMware. The read speeds seem to be fine. The guest is responsive when I click on programs and they open about as fast as bare metal or VMware. I downloaded and ran "Parkdale" HDD tester and ran a test with the following settings: - File size: 4000 - Block Size: 1 MByte The results are as follows: - Seq. Write Speed: 10.7 MByte/sec (Random Q32D: ) - Seq. Read Speed: 237.3 MByte/sec (Random Q32D: ) I ran another test, but this time changing the "Block Size" to "64 kByte [Windows Default]". Results are as follows: - Seq. Write Speed: 10.7 MByte/sec (Random Q32D: ) - Seq. Read Speed: 237.3 MByte/sec (Random Q32D: ) On the host, running '|dd bs=1M count=256 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync|' on my data mount via NFS rsuled in the following: 256+0 records in 256+0 records out 268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 3.59431 s, 74.7 MB/s I got this <https://romanrm.net/dd-benchmark> and measures the write speed of a disk. As you can see, it is significantly higher than what I am getting in the Windows guest VM. Running that same "dd" test on an Ubuntu guest VM gives me 24MB/s. Any ideas why I have such poor write performance? Is this normal with oVirt guests? Any ideas on what I might be able to do to improve them? I don't expect to get close to the "bare metal" results, but maybe something in the 40-60 MB/s range would be nice. All in one question

Hi guys, Please excuse this if it sounds like a dumb question, it's my first time doing an All-in-one" oVirt installation I've installed the All-in-one on one physical machine, and configured this as a host in the cluster, and my intention was to use local NFS storage as the primary storage domain for the VM's, but then add a second host to the cluster which would access this NFS primary storage domain on the original "All-in-one" installation... After doing the install when I log in I see that when you do an "All-in-one" install you end up with a "local_cluster" as well as a "Default" cluster and you can't add another host to the "local_cluster", so it appears I'll need to add the second host to the "Default" which I'm assuming means I won't be able to share the primary NFS storage between the two clusters and I won't get live migration between my two physical hosts across the clusters? Could anyone confirm if my assumptions are correct please? Thank you! Regards. Neil Wilson.

CPU family: which should I choose?

Hello, I am a bit confused about the CPU families. When I installed my host, it prompted me for the CPU family to use, and gave me a list of CPU models to choose from. I chose the default suggestion, model_SandyBridge. I don't recall all the choices it gave me offhand, but when I run ' vdsClient -s 0 getVdsCaps | grep -i flags ; echo -e -n "\n" ;cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "model name" | head -n 1', it indicates the following models detected: model_Nehalem model_Conroe model_coreduo model_core2duo model_Penryn model_Westmere model_n270 model_SandyBridge Which one would provide the most compatibility? Is there a list of CPU family "hierarchies" which would indicate what model(s) could fit with what? Thanks! :-) -Alan

Storage network question

If I am using a NIC on my host on the storage network to access storage (NFS, iSCSI, Gluster, etc.), is there any issue with allowing VMs to be assigned to it so they can access the same storage network? (the VMs would have a NIC added specifically for this, of course) Basically, unlike in VMware and Hyper-V, in oVirt can the same NIC be used for host and VM access to the storage network? Dropping Fedora 21 engine builds on master / 3.6 on July 31

Hi, since Fedora 21 is not going to be officially supported in 3.6 / master, in order to save resources for our CI systems we're going to drop builds for engine related packages starting from July 31. You may still continue developing engine on Fedora 21 by manually building required dependencies or you may upgrade to Fedora 22 and receive nightly builds by CI system. In the video demo, two hosts attach the neutron network to their eth1 interfaces, and their VMs can communicate with each other. But the demo doesn't go on to show how to connect those VMs to the internet with floating IPs. In the OpenStack Neutron videos I've watched on youtube, the common basic configuration seems to be a single 'network node' that connects to the public and private networks and routes to the 'compute nodes', which aren't connected to the public network. With the oVirt/Neutron integration, it seems like all hosts are both 'network' and 'compute' nodes, meaning that they need to be connected to the public network. Is that right, or am I missing some fundamental concept? Is it possible to designate 1 or 2 hosts of a cluster (with public network access) for the neutron appliance, while the remaining hosts only have private network access + floating IPs for VMs? Question about manual pools and statefulness

Hi, as far as I understand Manual Pools should be "stateful" as long as the admin does not return the vm to the pool (removing the permissions). In my test lab I did the following: Created Windows template Sysprep and Shutdown Configured a manual pool with the above template Configure "Initial run" with domain membership and so on Assigned permissions to the pool Logged in in the user portal and launched my pool The vm starts up but in the admin portal I see the vm has a Stateless snapshot (read-only) "VM TestPoolMan-1 was restarted on Host kvm02 as stateless" Then in the user portal I shut down the vm and the stateless snapshot is removed "VM TestPoolMan-1 is down. Exit message: User shut down from within the guest" I powered up it again and now it is stateful (no snapshot) "VM TestPoolMan-1 was started by c.mammoli(a)apra.it (Host: kvm02)." So it's like the first time a user starts a vm in a manual pool it is stateless and from the second start it becomes stateful...

LUN space lost after disk creation

Hello, yesterday I want to add a new disk with 100 GB to a running vm. The creation of the disk fails, but in the GUI, the disk space of the storage domain is about 100 GB too small. With lvdisplay I can't see a new volume and vgdisplay shows the correct values. I attache the vdsm.log of the affected time from the SPM. How can I get back the lost space? Best Regards, Michael
