[Users] Asking for advice on hosted engine

Hello everybody, I discovered oVirt a couple of months ago when I was looking for the best way to manage our small infrastructure. I have read any document I considered useful but I would like to receive advice from the many experts that are on this list. I think it worths an introduction (I hope doesn't get you bored). I work in a small local government entity and I try to manage effectively our limited resources. We have many years of experience with Linux and especially with CentOS which we have deployed on PC (i.e. for using as firewall in remote locations) and moreover on servers. We have been using Xen virtualization from the early days of CentOS 5 and we have built our positive experience on KVM too. I have to say that libvirt in a small environment like ours is really a nice tool. So nothing to regret. Trying to go a little further, as already said, I stumbled upon oVirt and I've found the project intriguing. At the moment we are thinking of deploying it on a small environment of four very similar servers each having: - a couple of Xeon E5504 - 6 x 1Gb ethernet interfaces - 40 GB of RAM two of them have 72 GB of disk (mirrored) two of them have almost 500GB of useful RAID array Moreover we have an HP iSCSI storage that should easily satisfy our current storage requirement. So, given our small server pool, the necessity of another host just to run the supervisor seems a requirement too high. Enter "hosted engine" and the picture takes brighter colors. Well, I'm usually not the adventurous guy but after experimenting a little with oVirt 3.4 I developed better confidence. We would want to install the engine over the two hosts with smaller disks. For what I know, installing hosted engine mandates NFS storage. But we want this to be highly available too, and possibly to have it on the very same hosts. Here is my solution: make a gluster replicated volume across the two hosts and take advantage of that NFS server. Then I put 127.0.0.1 as the address of the NFS server in the hosted-engine-setup so the host is always able to reach the storage server (itself). GlusterFS configuration is done outside of oVirt that, regarding engine's storage, doesn't even know that it's a gluster thing. Relax, we've finally reached the point where I'm asking advice :-) Storage and virtualization experts, do you see in this configuration any pitfall that I've overlooked given my inexperience in oVirt, Gluster, NFS or clustered filesystems? Do you think that not only it's feasable (I know it is, I made it and it's working now) but it's also reliable and dependable and I'm not risking my neck on this setup? I've obviously made some test but I'm not at the confidence level of saying that all is right in the way it is designed. OK, I think I've already written too much, better I stop and humbly wait for your opinion but I'm obviously here if any clarification by my part is needed. [Users] persisting selinux nightmare

I'm using the ovirt iso image and can't seem to get selinux to persist off no matter what i do. With selinux enforcing, SSHD isnt working, can't install or use the hosts. With it disabled, all seems to work, but after reboot, boom its enforcing again. I even edited /etc/selinux/config and changed it to permissive, then used "persist config" to persist the file. I reboot, I see the file is still changed, but selinux is back into enforcing mode (getenforce) what gives? I'm using this iso image, is this the latest one? It seems really hard to navigate the various old links in docs and such to find the most up to date isos. ovirt-node-iso-3.0.3-1.1.vdsm.fc19.iso

[Users] Host Non-Operational from sanlock and VM fails to migrate

I have a 2 node oVirt 3.3.2 cluster setup and am evaluating the setup for production use on our HPC system for managing our VM infrastructure. Currently I'm trying to utilize our DDR InfiniBand fabric for the storage domains in oVirt using NFS over RDMA. I've noticed some unstable behavior and it seems in every case to begin with sanlock. The ovirt web admin interface shows the following message as first sign of trouble on 2014-Feb-03 07:45. "Invalid status on Data Center Default. Setting Data Center status to Non Responsive (On host vm01.brazos.tamu.edu, Error: Network error during communication with the Host.).". The single VM I had running is stuck in the "Migrating From" state. virsh shows the VM paused on the crashed host and the one it attempted to migrate to. Right now I have a few concerns. 1) The cause of the sanlock (or other instability) and if it's related to a bug or an issue using NFSoRDMA. 2) Why the VM failed to migrate if the second host had no issues. If the first host is down should the VM be considered offline and booted on the second host after first is fenced? Attached are logs from the failed host (vm01) and the healthy host (vm02) as well as engine. The failed host's /var/log/message is also attached (vm01_message.log). Thanks - Trey

I've been testing the 3.4 prerelease on Fedora 19. When I create a GlusterFS (not POSIXFS) storage group and create a VM with a disk image on the storage group, I see a POSIX mount created on the host. Upon further investigation, when evaluating the executed qemu command line, it doesn't appear qemu is being told to use libgfapi but rather that previously observed POSIX mount. One other note, I'm specifically testing the hosted engine, and haven't tested using the non-hosted variant. The question is .... is this expected behavior, and if so, is it because of the hosted engine? Or is this some form of regression from the advertised feature list of oVirt 3.3? Anything I should try or look at? I'm obviously concerned about the FUSE overhead with Gluster and would like to avoid that if possible. Thanks! -Brad

I'm working on (Zabbix) monitoring through the RESTful API. Which role should I assign to the monitoring user? The user only needs read access to the data but it looks like I nead to assign at least an "Admin" role to the user to be able to read data through the API. For this I've created a "AdminLoginOnly" role that only has System->Configure System->Login Permissions access. Is this the way to go for this king of configuration? Or is there a way to further minimize the permissions of this user? Another issue is that a "Login" event is generated every time the user connects through the API. This makes the "Events" pane less useful / readable. Is there a way to disable this for some users/roles?

Ok, after more investigation on agent logs and some code modification it seem that the agent is receiving commands from virtio device. As it should. I have seen commands lock-screen, shutdown, etc... But not the "login" command. Look like engine trouble... I will do more testing tomorrow. Simon

So far I got my company to run oVirt in our lab. They love it so far. The nail in the coffin for vmware would be easy migration path options. Conversions are kicking my tail right now. I did try it about a year ago (although I no longer recall if I was converting ESX or VBox images since I had both), in a standalone mode, and failed miserably and didn't pursue it. [Users] Help required: Selinux disable for ovirt iso image

I apologize if this comes off a little brusque, but there's really a lot of random information out there right now, to the point where i've seen it confuse not only myself but other new installers. Based on the problems I still have, I have a suggestion, and I also need some help. Again, some of this may come off as a bit of a TLDR Rant but if ovirt is to become popular, I believe my experience as a hardware engineer, software/hardware QA director/manager/engineer, may be valuable to this project. Two things keep me from getting this system working for me in a useful manner: #1, and the most important blocker: Disabling or fixing selinux, using ovirt-node-iso-3.0.3-1.1.vdsm.fc19.iso. #2, getting raritan pdu support For issue #1: I've had a lot of people say "disable selinux" or "fix selinux" all over this user list and in recent replies. This really isn't fully helpful information. Even stating "edit the /etc/selinux/config" or use the kernel boot command "selinux=0" or read some other doc on the internet. These all apply to full fledged releases, not to the ovirt iso image. The main issue is that SSHD is not being allowed through selinux by default on this image. The right thing to do would be to fix the image and re-release it, and DELETE the broken one that is currently available. However a simple doc explaining how to persist the selinux disable or fix the SSHD problem with selinux would be the easiest solution. Others ran me down the path of "edit the selinux file and persist it" which didn't work, but gave no productive help on how to make it permanent. Equally I've been told to edit the grub config and add selinux=0 to the kernel, however after attempting this, adding it manually at the grub boot causes the system not to boot, and I haven't found the *right* grub.cfg file to edit and persist to keep the changes. For issue #2: I've hacked up some of the fence-agents scripts and am in the process of attempting to figure out how to compile/set up my own local copy to verify the raritan changes. Ideally the fence-agents folks would add a "generic support" portion, which I may actually do myself as well, allowing *any* PDU with at least the usual login/password/command/logout sequence to be used. So you see, I'm not totally useless, I'm helping here. Next suggestions: A) Compatibility list B) Cleanup of old project crap For A) For each release, I suggest there be a spreadsheet or simple document that shows which ovirt ISO images are compatible with which manager versions. There could be a wiki where people can add references to bug #s that have been found and links to their solutions. Right now there are ancient docs all over google searches that send people down paths of days of turmoil to no avail. For B) When iso images or other releases are superseded because of blocking, non-operable bugs, they should either be resolved and re-released or a clear path to making them function be documented. Once a re-release is done, the old images should be wiped out or moved to a clearly marked deprecated folder. Thats my 100 cents worth, I really do appreciate the work and effort that goes into this project, it appears to be a wonderful one, I hope to make good use of it, but the initial learning curve is a real deal breaker I'm sure for many others, especially not those willing and able to spend the time hacking at it like I have for the past week. Quick overview: Ovirt 3.3.2 running on CentOS 6.5 Two hosts: ovirt001, ovirt002 Migrating two VM's: puppet-agent1, puppet-agent2 from ovirt002 to ovirt001. The first VM puppet-agent1 migrates successfully. The second VM puppet-agent2 fails with "Migration failed due to Error: Fatal error during migration (VM: puppet-agent2, Source: ovirt002, Destination: ovirt001)." I've attached the logs if anyone can help me track down the issue. Hello Group, Please help me out in storage issue in ovirt. I am using Dell PowerEdge XD 720 servers, as node in Ovirt. Every node has 24TB storage space, so i am using all this space as the local storage in that.. But still i am facing the problem in storgae performance. My guests os are very slow to write the data.
