[Users] oVirt 3.1 -> 3.2 upgrade path

Hi, Anyone been doing upgrades of ovirt engine + nodes from 3.1 to 3.2 yet ? what is the proposed upgrade path ? nodes first, then engine or other way around ? As the "domain" is a 3.1 domain currently, the nodes (HVs) would become disconnected from the engine if the engine was upgrade first ? Or, if you upgrade the nodes (HVs) first to 3.2 will it be able to run in a "3.1 compatibility" mode to still be controlled by a 3.1 engine, and when engine is upgraded to 3.2 will the node (HV) then switch to 3.2 automatically / or is a restart / reconfiguration required ? Hi... I've been working with both RHEV and Ovirt and can see distinct changes and improvements with regards to how Ovirt is emerging and changing. One area that still disturbs me is in the area of recovery and cleanup, specifically around the ovirt-engine (rhevm) node. I've observed a few things about the project: - backup of a engine db seems to be a fairly manual process with many steps. There are many files listed that need to be backed up manually as listed in the RHEVM admin manual. pg_dump seems to automate the dumping of the db, but other config files are left up to the admin. - restoration appears to be equally complex - engine-cleanup (rhevm-cleanup) doesn't always cleanup - there appear to be instances where the only way to get a solid base is reinstallation. I've removed and reinstalled components so many times it is now second nature. ;) I'm curious about: - Are there technical issues (beyond the code not being written yet) that prevent backup and restore procedures from working correctly to save and restore an engine environment? I would expect that a test for that operation would be to setup an environment, take a snapshot, and restore the whole thing to another management node. - Are all the config files properly identified? The RHEVM Admin manual has an extensive list but is it exhaustive? - What technically prevents engine-cleanup from really *cleaning* a system? My expectation would be that I should be able to run engine-cleanup and completely wipe out the setup. All databases, certs, config files and the like returned to their original, pristine state. Perhaps another script - engine-restore-defaults? - needs to go beyond where engine-cleanup goes today? As a support professional, these are areas that I think warrant investment and I wonder what is gating the development here. [Users] Connecting to portals through ip and consoles

Hello, I'm verifying this behavior with an oVirt 3.2 beta in all-in-one config if the client doesn't know the hostname of engine and uses instead its ip to connect to webadmin portal or user portal, the gui works, but then when it connects to a spice console of a VM it receives the error of unable to connect to connet to graphics server as soon as I put engine entry hostname ip in /etc/hosts of a fedora 17 client it can now connect to spice console. Is this expected behavior? Any workaround (other than hosts one I tested) in case of lab/test environment when no dns feasible? Thanks Gianluca

Hi, A user of mine is trying to ruin oVirt's reputation by asking me how will I handle the USB dongle issue. I found nothing like USB passthrough drivers, and I don't intend to use such a bad solution. Is there anyone here who faced such a request? I saw http://www.dongleservice.com/ and http://www.digi.com/products/usb/anywhereusb, but I was wondering if anything lighter would exist (based on some dd if=/dev/goodOldLinuxTrickWeLove things...) The VM is a XP or 2003, and I already tried dd /dev/myUsbDevice of=dongle.iso, then mount it in the VM with daemon tool. The iso is mounting, but the content does not appear. Anyway, I'm not sure at all this will be enough emulation to convince the doubtful software *this* is its dongle. Regards, -- Nicolas Ecarnot

[Users] Restirct list of AD servers

I have a situation where the Active Directory domain I am trying to use as authentication for ovirt lists many servers all around the world. But... my server running ovirt is sitting behind a firewall that doesn't allow me to access all of them... only the local ones. We do have a "locater dns record" which we can query at a well known name and it will always return the local ip address of the AD server... but if you query the SRV records for the domain it will return all of the servers. I was able to add the domain using engine-manage-domains, and I tweaked the /etc/ovirt-engine/krb5.conf to only include the local AD servers where we can access, but that doesn't seem to be sufficient. Not sure if ovirt is querying the dns records on boot to get the list of servers to talk to or not, but it doesn't seem to be using /etc/ovirt-engine/krb.conf for this purpose. So... is there anyway to manually force it to use a certain server and not have it query dns? thanks.

I'm doing PoC of a number of systems, so need to give oVirt a fair shake, but I'm tripping up before I can even get going (does not bode well). I've tried following the QuickStart, all-in-one & other guides, & quickly came across issues. Next I'll have to start building from source - a prospect that will by no means present me with less issues. New F18, minimal headless server. Installed via yum as documented, but install failed at the last steps, as there seems to be an issue with the scripts' implementation of firewalld. A very nice chap @ the IRC channel managed to help be out to get over that initial hurdle - had to *completely* disable firewalld & select the 'None' option for the setup. (seems like a really bad idea to start off like that - disabling security - but this is a lab PoC, so OK, will let it slide for now) I've also disabled SELinux & IPtables via systemctl - so that we can eliminate that as an issue. Script(s) still don't complete without issue, but at lease the engine seems to come up & I can log in. After logging in, I try to (re)connect to the local hypervisor via (root@) $FQDN, localhost & 127.0.0.1, but it fails to come up (why root? OK....). It adds the host, but there seems to be connectivity issues. I'm seeing this in the GUI events: Host localhost installation failed. I have installed Ovirt 3.1 on a Fedora 17 server, and would like to upgrade to Fedora 18... The documentation I have found on the mailing list is unclear on how to do this. Does anyone have any pointers on how this can be done.. as well as upgrading to Ovirt 3.2 after we've upgraded to Fedora 18 Thanks In advance

Hello, I got an error when trying to migrate a VM. On the "events" tab on the bottom it said. [Users] fedora-18 host deploy regression

Hello, Since the release of fedora-18, there are some regressions related to tuned package. It is regression compared to Beta. tuned service does not start because of various reasons[1][2][3]. One option is to drop tuned usage, another is to push fedora into fixing these. A fix for [3] is available, but has not been pushed yet. [Users] Host deployment on 3.2

I've hit a couple of small problems deploying an F18 minimal host with 3.2. The first problem was missing tar. Second, I had manually set up a vlan on the host for initial communication and the regular expression in bridge.py of the otopi plugin couldn't determine the vlan id. After tweeking it a bit to make it similar to _RE_VLAN_DEVICE it was fine. --- Jeff

While not an actual problem with oVirt, the latest systemd/udev packages for F18 (197-1) break permissions on LVM volumes and stop vdsm/qemu/etc from accessing them. I just downgraded them and everything seems OK but I thought I'd let people know (easier to just avoid rather than repair :) ). There's a bugzilla for it from a week or two ago but since 3.2 came out I figured a lot more people might be installing it on new F18 installations with all the updates and running into problems.

Hi, I find it hard to find any information about the way I have to follow to convert/import a vmdk/qcow/raw/etc... single disk into an oVirt disks list. I know how to use virt-v2v to import complete VMs (disk AND config), but don't know how to handle a single data disk. Regards, -- Nicolas Ecarnot

Hi, Here is a simple question about what is the best practice about the location of a NFS export domain. At present, I'm using a server as the oVirt manager, and this server is also a NFS server for the ISO storage domain. I'm using another server to serve an NFS export domain, but I'm thinking of changing that. Is there any advice against the decision to host the export domain NFS on the same server as the manager? For the time being, I will mainly use this export storage domain to rarely import some p2v imports, but I don't need performance. Your opinion? -- Nicolas Ecarnot

Hi, I've just set up a new oVirt installation with two nodes. Both of the nodes have had 'firewalld' disabled. When I went to test VM migration, it failed, apparently due to this (from the vdsm log on the source node): error : virNetClientProgramDispatchError:174 : Error while building firewall: Some rules could not be created for interface vnet0: Failure to execute command '$EBT -t nat -N libvirt-J-vnet0' : 'DBusException org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.fedoraproject.FirewallD1 was not provided by any .service filesCouldn't connect to FirewallD, it's probably not running.'. Hi, For setting up a firewall in a VM I would like to add 2 of my 4 nics directly to a VM. In my previous setup I thought I have done that, but at the moment I cannot figure this out and cannot find the docs to accomplish this. I would like to dedicate those 2 nics to my firewall VM's to avoid sharing them using a network per accident to other VM's. How is this be done at the moment ? Cheers, Matt

[Users] Engine location best practice?

I'm setting up an oVirt environment at $WORK and trying to decide where to locate the ovirt-engine. Is it better practice to put it on a separate computer from the nodes? If I co-locate it on a node machine, then I have to worry about it being unavailable if that node is down. How much of an issue is that likely to be? Thanks, --[Lance]

[Users] ovirt-shell: Disabling autopage

Hi, Currently the ovirt-shell displays command results using a pager. It does this even when running non-interactively (ie. input via pipe) which is broken. As a workaround, I discovered the option 'cli:autopage = False' should be placed in my .ovirtshellrc file. This works great the first time, but then it seems ovirt-shell is overwriting this file and dumping my new setting. Ever since this change: http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/11078/ The webadmin and userportal UI no longer displays nor works correctly within Internet Explorer 8 or 9. Under IE 8 or 9 the UI is pretty much an usable garbled mess. Everything looks and works fine under Chrome and Firefox. Unfortunately Internet Exploder is a necessary evil for windows users to be able to get at SPICE consoles. (No spice plugin/support for Firefox/Chrome yet...) - DHC

[Users] NFS Advanced Parameters Greyed out on Existing Storage Domains

So I have read this BZ https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=855729 and these related ovirt BZs http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/8110/ http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/8797/ http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/8798/ So forgive me but I am a little confused. I have some existing NFS Storage domains that I was not paying attention and attached without doing any advanced parameters in RHEV 3.1 Now the NFS Advanced Parameters box is greyed out. So now that I have attached these domains I cannot change the advanced nfs option such as change it to Nfs4 from 3 or rsize and wsize? Maybe if I was using upstream oVirt instead of Rhev 3.1 I would be able to make the changes in vdsm.conf and they would be honored? -- Chris Noffsinger
