Hosted engine installation oVirt 4.5 initialize lockspace volume

Hello, hope, you are doing well. I try to install a new hosted engine on my environment to switch the storage this engine. I use following command to deploy the instance: hosted-engine --deploy --4 --ansible-extra-vars=he_offline_deployment=true Everything works fine, except the initialization of lockspace volume. Recreate engine without backup

Hi all, I have a situation in which customer has deleted standalone engine completely (it was running on vmware), and all backups were saved on the same machine - so there is no backup available. Can someone suggest how to preserve virtual machines which are still running on kvm hosts, and recreate standalone engine to be able to manage existing kvm hosts and machines? Server 2008R2 UEFI ISO Boot Problerm

Greetings oVirt team I'm using "Version 4.5.7-0.master.20240327074810.git14bca0502d.el8 on CentOS Stream 9" I have occasion to restore a windows backup image for the purpose of data extraction. To accomplish this I need to boot off a Server 2008R2 ISO. The machine to be restored was UEFI based originally and so it is required to be UEFI for the restoration process. I seem to be having a problem with booting off of the ISO image in the required UEFI-based system. In pursuit of a solution I've read on some of the other forums about this same problem on other KVM-based platforms. Booting that same ISO after changing the VM to BIOS works flawlessly. In the articles and threads I've read there is mention of hyper-v services that load during the guest boot process that are causing the ISO boot to hang. Is it possible to disable (or is it even necessary to disable) "hv_time,hv_relaxed,hv_spinlocks=0x2000" in the "Custom Properties" section of the VM config ? If any of you have some insight into this problem and a possible solution I'd appreciate the feedback.

Hi Alex, After conducting a thorough check, we have confirmed that all virtual machines are operating smoothly, and the network is functioning without any issues (we can successfully SSH into both the VMs and the manager). Additionally, there is available storage on both the node and the manager. However, we are encountering difficulty accessing the oVirt manager console, as we are consistently receiving a "503 Service Unavailable" error. How to Add Centos9 KVM Host to oVirt engine?

Network interface configuration

Hi! There is any configuration on interface, kernel or sysctl.conf to tuning of network performance? We have Connect-X 40Gbps and 100Gbps but we guess we can have more performance, you know? Our VMs have a +- 1 or 2gigas (1500 MTU) of throughput on iperf test. ovirtmgmt has around 27 ~ 30Gbps (9000 MTU) of throughput on iperf test. We already use 9000 MTU in all network devices and ovirt's bonds. Tests were performed without concorrence workload. Cheers!

HI , I need to know about the Pre allocation size of a thin disk while creating a disk in a storage domain . Can we change the actual size (allocated Size ) after disk creation .Can anyone can enlighten me on how it will increase when the size of the disk exceeds the allocated limit ? If I try to write to the disk from the hypervisor , the write gets failed after the allocated size whereas if i create a thick disk i am able to write till the disk capacity Regards Shafi

VM's migrations cause timeouts on various unrelated hosts which results in host restart

During the VM's migrations from one host to another, various unrelated hosts have timeouts and some of them are being restarted by Engine due to their "unresponsive" status. However they're working fine at that time... It only happens when migration process is being run on other unrelated hosts. Of course, one solution might be increasing the timeout, but it's only a workaround and in my opinion, not a proper solution. virt-v2v cannot authenticate with oVirt engine API with OAuth2

I've been reading through archives but not able to find what i need. Essentially what I'm trying to do is migrate a larger number of VMs from our OVM environment to a new OLVM setup. In an effort to reduce lots of replication and copying of the disk image (export, convert, copy over, import etc.) I found this article which shows a pretty slick way to do it in one shot https://blogs.oracle.com/scoter/post/how-to-migrate-oracle-vm-to-oracle-lin… The main command behind it all is the virt-v2v that makes it possible. It looks something like this: virt-v2v -i libvirtxml vm-test1.xml -o rhv-upload -oc https://<OLVM-server>/ovirt-engine/api -os <my storage> -op /tmp/ovirt-admin-password -of raw -oo rhv-cluster=Default -oo rhv-cafile=/root/ca.pem The problem I'm having is I cannot authenticate with my new OLVM server at the ovirt-engine/api URL. Since user/password is depricated and you must use OAuth 2.0 with a token I'm stuck. I have OLVM 4.5.4-1.0.27.el8 and from what I've read in oVirt 4.5 (not sure what version it started) they use keycloak oAuth 2.0 and the older ovirt-aaa-jdbc-tool is now deprecated. In doing some testing I found I can use curl and authenticate against the ovirt-engine/api and get a token like this: OVIRT_ENGINE_URL="https://<myolvm1>/ovirt-engine" USERNAME="admin@ovirt@internalsso" PASSWORD="<mypassword>" CLUSTER_NAME="Default" TOKEN=$(curl -k -X POST -H "Accept: application/json" -H "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded" -d "grant_type=password &username=$USERNAME&password=$PASSWORD&scope=ovirt-app-api" $OVIRT_ENGINE_URL/sso/oauth/token | jq -r '.access_token') I was then able to query the API to validate my token works curl -k -H "Accept: application/json" -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" "$OVIRT_ENGINE_URL/api/clusters?search=name=$CLUSTER_NAME" The problem is virt-v2v does not support posting any form information or the token to authenticate. Best I can tell the -oc option is strictly the URL and if you want a username in there it's in the form of https://<name>@<server>. So even if I wrote a script and used curl to authenticate and get a token I still can't find a way to make virt-v2v use it. So I'm stuck how do I get virt-v2v working? Is there a way to re-enable the deprecated user/pass method of accessing the ovirt-engine/api ? or as a last resort a way to get virt-v2v supporting the token? Thanks for any insight Malcolm

Hi all, I manage three 4.5 engines with 4.5 ovirt-nodes. When I update nodes (el8 based) from 4.5.4 to 4.5.5, vms can't migrate anymore. They only migrate from 4.5.4 el8 to 4.5.4 el8 hosts, 4.5.5 el8 to 4.5.5 el8 hosts. But: They can migrate from 4.5.4(el8) to 4.5.5(el9) It may come from qemu-kvm incompatibility versions: 4.5.5 el9: qemu-kvm-8.1.0-4 4.5.4 el8: qemu-kvm-6.2.0-41 4.5.5 el8: qemu-kvm-6.2.0-20 This makes the migration impossible without a downtime. The solution could be to resintall each host in 4.5.5 el9 based, but the most of my production vms run with a qxl/spice graphic based which are not supported anymore on el9. Does anybody know how to do this migration without any downtime? Hi, I am migrating some vmware VM's from an NFS Storage via rhv-upload in virt-v2v, what is working good. Reason: timeout due to transfer inactivity. There are 2 strange things. 1. When I start virt-v2v it will create all 6 disks and set them to transferring, but virt-v2v will import one after the other, what leads to kind of unused/timing out transferring tickets. 2. When I copy the disk images to a local disk before, it works. Maybe just because of faster transfer speeds. Is there a possibility to transfer parallel or maybe extend the timeout? Deployment servers are behind a proxy and I have set it in environment and in yum.conf before run deploy. oVirt manager page fails with "500 error" after fresh install of oVirt 4.4.10 manager on Rocky Linux 8.9

I did a clean install of oVirt manager 4.4.10 on a clean Rocky Linux 8.9. I have found I get through installing and running "engine-setup" successfully without errors. The manager web site errors on "500 internal server error" but the Grafana site works without a problem. I seem to be missing one step or one configuration setting. I'm working with Rocky Linux 8.9 and oVirt 4.4.10 partially to plan for migration, but also because I have older hardware at home I am using to sandbox with. I also plan to test upgrading from CentOS 7.9 with oVirt 4.3.10, so I want to make sure I have a solid installation method Rocky Linux 8.9 and oVirt 4.4.10. (my current method for installing CentOS 7.9 with oVirt 4.3.10 works flawless on hardware, and VMs). When following the documentation for installing oVirt standalone manager on Enterprise Linux on the oVirt web site: https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/installing_ovirt_as_a_standalone_manage… There’s a section specific to "RedHat derivatives" – specifically Rocky Linux https://www.ovirt.org/download/install_on_rhel.html I followed the steps to the best of my ability. Here are the specific steps I took: installed Rocky Linux - minimal install, added "system tools" when that boots up I run these commands in this order: dnf distro-sync --nobest dnf install https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release44.rpm dnf module -y enable javapackages-tools dnf module -y enable pki-deps dnf module -y enable postgresql:12 dnf module -y enable mod_auth_openidc:2.3 dnf module -y enable nodejs:14 dnf install -y https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-4.4/rpm/el8/x86_64/ovirt-engine-appli… (this package gets installed when you run the command: dnf install ovirt-engine-appliance ) dnf install ovirt-engine -y engine-setup I found the documentation says to run adding repos first then install release 4.4 RPM but the Java repo errors out, so I install the RPM first. I could do that last and enable Java afterwards like this: ... everything else... dnf install https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release44.rpm dnf module -y enable nodejs:14 Again, to summarize: I have followed the documentation to the best of my ability and the process succeeds, but it always fails on 500s on trying to launch the manager. The Grafana web site works fine. I should note on the same system I can install CentOS 7.9 and oVirt 4.3.10. It succeeds and works flawlessly. Create Vm without Storage Domain

Hi Team , I am new to Ovirt and have been using KVM off late . I use libvirt (virt or virsh commands) to create and manage Vms . I have a pretty basic doubt in OVirt . I was trying to migrate a VM from my KVM host .I copied my .qcow2 virtual disk to the ovirt host. I am able to create a Vm after uploading the disk to a new storage domain and create a VM with the storage domain. Can I create a VM without using a storage domain ( By directly attaching the copied .qcow2 disk ) to the Vm Regards Shafi

oVirt hosts mounting old storage domain even though it's not listed in the engine

We have an oVirt cluster with multiple hosts that continues to mount an old storage domain we used for ISO images. The engine does not show this old storage domain and I've even looked at the engine sql database and not found this old storage domain. Manually unmounting the ISO storage domain on the hosts doesn't fix it as it will remount within a few minutes. Is there some way to manually make vdsm stop remounting this old path? I didn't know if there is a way to regenerate those files from scratch. We've went through all our VMs and removed the cdroms even trying to get it to stop. We're going to try rebuilding a host from scratch to see if it's an artifact left on the host versus an artifact that's coming from the engine. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello oVirt community. i just tried to add a new host(wh refresh) to our cluster with installed Centos Stream 9, bud ovirt installation fails with message network not found. there are 4 NICs (2SPF one Is the DB vacuum cleaning thorough? I tried that a long time ago and it didn't seem to clear much space. Is the data recorded in DB cyclic or automatically cleared periodically? Is it necessary to enable global maintenance for DB vacuum?

Hi, We are experiencing some network limitations on our virtual machines, we have done some initial testing to pinpoint the exact issue. Hardware: 2 x 25G NICs per physical machine 2 x 100G interlinks between datacenters iPerf test between two VMs in same host on same cluster and same datacenter reveals ~20GB/s (what is more or less expected) iPerf test between two VMs in differet host on same cluster and same datacenter reveals ~20GB/s (what is more or less expected) iPerf test between two VMs in differet host on different cluster and different datacenter reveals ~10GB/s (what is half or less than expected) There are no firewalls or other identified blockeing equipment between the datacenters. The only difference, as I see it, are traffic going across the 100G interlinks. Are there anything that needs to be tuned / setup in the NICs either on the VM or the host to be able to get higher speed between the datacenters? /John

Hello I migrated back a self hosted engine to standalone vm, but I can't delete the old hosted engine vm and its related hosted storage domain. I tried to do it into the database (vm_static table) but I had this error: violates foreign key constraint "fk_snapshot_vm". Hello, I have been trying to install Ovirt 4.5.5 for the very first time but I have been struggling. I install Ovirt using the documentation on the website: https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/installing_ovirt_as_a_self-hosted_engin…. When I install my first node I am unable to access the webconsole on port 9090. I have set the root password and disabled the root lock. I am however unable to login on the webconsole with the root user. I have searched far and low but I am unable to find the correct information. Can someone tell me what the default login should be? Storage Domain Limitations

Hi, We have oVirt v4.4.9 environment on our organizitaion. There are 2TB storage domains which have one LUN each and the storage type is Fibre Channel. I would like to add 10TB or more sized LUNs and reduce the number of storage domain. Is it possible? Is there any limitation for storage domain size in this version of oVirt? I’m looking for documentation about this subject but I couldn't find any information. I would be so glad if you could help me.

Ovirt 4.5 HA over NFS fails when a single host goes down

Greetings, we have recently installed ovirt as a hosted-engine with high availability on six nodes over NFS storage (no Gluster), with power management through an on-board IPMI device, and the setup was successful. All the nodes (from Supermicro) are identical in every aspect, so no hardware differences exist and no modifications to the servers' hardware were performed. The hosted-engine was deployed on a second host, where two of the six hosts only were required to host the HE VM. The network interface on each node is bonded between two physical fiber optics NICs in LACP mode with a VLAN on top, serving as the sole networking interface for the server/node, no separate VM or storage networks were needed, as the host OS, hosted-engine vm, and storage are required to be on the same network and VLAN. We started by testing the high-availability of the hosted-engine VM (as it was deployed on two of the six nodes) by rebooting or powering off one of the hosts, and the VM would migrate successfully to the second HE node. The main goal of our experiments is to test the robustness of the setup, as it is required for the cluster to remain functional even when up to two hosts are brought down (whether due to a network or power issue), however, when rebooting or powering off one of the hosts, the HE VM goes down and takes the entire cluster with it, where we can't even access the web portal. Once the host is rebooted, the HE VM and the cluster becomes functional again. Sometimes the HE VM stays down for a set amount of time (5 to 6 minutes) and then goes back up, and sometimes it goes down until the problematic host is back up. This behavior happens to other VMs as well not the the HE. We suspected an issue with the NFS storage, however, during ovirt operation it is being mounted properly over /rhev/data-center/mnt/<nfs:directory>, while the expected behavior is for the cluster to stay operational and any other VMs to be migrated to other hosts. During one of the tests, we tried to mount the NFS storage on a different directory and there was no problem, we were even able to perform commands such as ls without any issues, as well as writing a text file at the directory's root, and be able to modify it normally. We suspected a couple of things the first being that the HE is unable to fence the problematic host (the one we took down), however, power management is setup properly. The other thing we suspected is the cluster hosts (after taking down one of them) are unable to acquire storage lease, which is weird since the host in question is down and non-operational, hence no locks should be in place. The reason behind this suspicion is the following two errors that we receive frequently when one host or more goes down from the engine\ovirt-engine\engine.log file: 1- "EVENT_ID: VM_DOWN_ERROR(119), VM HostedEngine is down with error. Exit message: resource busy: Failed to acquire lock: Lease is held by another host." 2- "[<id>] Command 'GetVmLeaseInfoVDSCommand( VmLeaseVDSParameters:{expectedEngineErrors='[NoSuchVmLeaseOnDomain]', storagePoolId='<pool-id>', ignoreFailoverLimit='false', leaseId='<lease-id>', storageDomainId='<domain-id>'})' execution failed: IRSGenericException: IRSErrorException: No such lease: 'lease=<lease-id>'" This is a third warning from the /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log file 1- "WARN (check/loop) [storage.check] Checker '/rhev/data-center/mnt/<nfs-domain:/directory>/<id>/dom_md/metadata' is blocked for 310.00 seconds (check:265)" All the tests are done without setting nodes into maintenance mode as we are simulating an emergency situation. No HE configuration were modified via the config-engine command, the default values are used. Is this a normal behavior? Are we missing something? Do we need to tweak a certain configuration using the config-engine command to get a better behavior (e.g., shorter down period)? Best regards

Hosted Engine out of sync

Hi, Last January I lost access to my oVirt Manager dashboard due to a certificate error. I managed to fix this problem, but since then I have lost all the usage information displayed on the dashboard. After that, two of my hosts lost communication with the hosted engine and no matter what I've tried, they can't connect to my cluster and always have an "Unassigned" or "NonOperational" status. Recently I have noticed that the web interface of the manager is too slow due to the high CPU of the hosted engine. The high CPU is caused by the postmaster process. I have been running this cluster for many years but this is the first time I have experienced so many problems. Can you please help me? BR Odysseas Odysseos

VM - HDD vs SSD virtual disks

Hi, In Windows 11 VMs, virtual disks are reported as "HDD" whereas the underlying storage is SSD (ISCSI Storage Array). This may lead to unnecessary defragmentation and other "optimizations". Is there something to do to flag virtual disks as being "SSD" ? It is also detected as "Thin-provisioned". Which is also false. From the VM point of view we create our disks as "preallocated". Thin-provisioning is handled at the underlying storage array level. I don't think that it's a good idea to cascade to thin-provisioning features, that are of different nature and don't act together.

Fail to web-console Hosted Engine

Good afternoon. I'm mocking up Red virtualization in the HostedEngine+Iscsi configuration. I installed the Engine on one host, added Iscsi storage to store the Engine, I try to log into the Engine’s web console, but the page does not load -ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED. I can't ping anything from Engine. I can only log into Engine from the host via shh or vm-console. Engine statu : {"vm": "up", "health": "good", "detail": "Up"} What errors can there be? Entries in /etc/hosts have been made. After pinging and looking at the arp tables of everything I could, I realized that the problem was in the connection between the ovirtmgmt interface of the Host and the eth0 Engine. But I haven’t figured out how to fix this yet. Sorry for my English - it's my second language.

At the moment I only have one server available, so I install the iso on this server ovirt-node-ng-installer-4.5.5-2023113015.el8 via the cockpit web interface as a second step I have to install the vm for the engine then I configure the storage gluster for the virtual machines. Advice on upgrading oVirt 4.2 CentOS 7.x cluster to oVirt 4.5 Rocky Linux 8.9

I have multiple aging clusters that I now need to upgrade both the host OS and the oVirt release. I have seen the notes about upgrading 4.2 to 4.3 and then being able to upgrade to 4.5, but what's not so clear is how to upgrade the host nodes' OS versions. After thinking about it, I wonder if this method is sane. Any advice or guidance is greatly appreciated. 1) spin up a new cluster running oVirt 4.5.x on the latest Rocky Linux release. 2) shutdown VMs on the original cluster 3) detach the domain storage 4) snapshot the domain storage (for rollback) 5) import the domain on the new cluster. 6) reload the OS on the original cluster to the new OS release (no local storage) 7) add those hosts to the new cluster

Hi, I experienced a weird Failure. I hope I explain it understandable and not too hard to read We had issues with our backups, that they can't finalize Here is a Thread someone having the same issue. https://forums.veeam.com/ovirt-kvm-f62/veeam-rhv-12-1-command-removeimageti… so I made some investigations and recognized, it seems to be an Issue with Snapshot 1. Maybe the storage was failing for some reason or maybe veeam messed something up, but what leaves me afraid is, that the Ovirt-Engine didn't show me any Problem with the Cluster or the Storage. I mean it's obvious, that there was/is a huge failure with the storage and Ovirt did not recognize neither did it alarm me. Some of my VMs have actual sizes showing more than virtual size and when we look inside the Vm the used space is much less than the actual size. Locked VHDD - Help To Unlock/Delete

Hi All, I've gone and made a (bad) mistake. When creating a new VM I accidentally selected the wrong Storage Domain for the VM's VHDD; a Storage Domain with less space available than the size of the new (thick provisioned) VHDD. So now I want to delete that VHDD (and possibly the accompanying VM) and start over. However, the VHDD is "Locked" and I can't figure out a way to delete it (or Unlock it, or delete the VM, or Unattach the VHDD, etc, etc, etc). I can't find anything online so hopefully someone here can help me out. For the record I have full Admin access to *all* physical and virtual resources and I don't mind doing things via CLI (which I suspect is what's going to be required). I'm also familia with SQL (MariaDB, MS-SQL) but not Postgres, so if this is going to required manipulating the oVirt DB then so-be-it, I can do that as well. Thanks in advance Cheers Dulux-Oz

Using External CA

Hello all- I am looking for a methodology to force oVirt to use certs/keys managed and deployed externally. These are automated by our various automation systems and are configured to match our security policies. Rogue and/or non-transparent and/or standalone CAs in our org do not comply with our security policy. If I pre-deploy certificates and keys, does oVirt engine still need to be a CA? Similarly, our encryption policy requires use of RSA 4096 or ED25519 for SSH. This, as I understand it, is also not compatible with the RSA 2048 generated/used by the engine's internal CA. Is SSHing to this new host using this key necessary, or can I externally enroll a new host into a cluster or - if not - use different SSH key via the engine (likely derived from the above/below-mentioned certs, which may be RSA 4096)? Essentially, could I: 1. Pre-provision certificates and keys in /etc/pki/ovirt-*/ with the appropriate filenames<https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/infra/pki.html#fi…> 2. Run engine-setup for the first time (using an answers file)? Will engine-setup balk at the existence of those files, silently overwrite them, or use them? Thanks in advance. AFter migration, the disk became un-allocated in windows and now it's asking to re-initialize, I am afraid that data has been lost. Is there a way we can recover it back? Thanks

I noticed when doing the install of the engine it cant be done in the cockpit i dont see the tab in the frame so I did the install command line no problem with that. During the install of the engine it disconnects and in the messages it just continues with node-ansible-async_wrapper.py [16052] still running 55070. Any idea what this means ? How can I get this to install. I have done 4.3 installs in past with no problems.
