Storage domain format version info

Hello, part of updating a DC from 4.2 to 4.3 consists in updating format of data storage domains from V4 to V5. Questions: - where can I find list of differences between V4 and V5? And in general between previous ones? - can I force only a particular storage domain to remain in V4 while having the other ones upgraded to V5, for any reason? Or the reverse: update only one of the defined domains? Eg on oVirt web site I only found this for V4 https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/storage/storage_d… with mention about Qcow2 v3 (link broken.. one ot the upstream pages for it here: https://wiki.qemu.org/Features/Qcow3 ) that should give near raw performance with advantages of qcow2 format... Ovirt Secure boot issues

Hello All, I would like to ask any of you to do a simple test. Please install a linux on a VM with Secure boot and after the install wizzard is over -power it off and then on. Here is what I have observed: 1. UEFI forgets the certificates after a poweroff and asks for the openSUSE certificate every time. Rebooting from the VM doesn't cause any problems till nextg boot. 2. RHEL8 grub menu consists only of 'System setup'. When you select it - you are sent to the UEFI menu. If you select continue - everything is fine. Poweroff + Poweron makes everything to repeat. Do you observe the same issues. If I'm not the only one hitting this - I will open a bug, otherwise I will try to further debug this. Best Regards, Strahil Nikolov

VM lost conection.

Hi there, I have a problem, Last week I lost connectivity a VM with OS Windows server 2008 I access to check it and in ovirtmanager that VM is power on and I could login it, but there was no ping to other VM machines So I restarted VM and I recovery connectivity. Today It shows the same scenario with same VM. I checked log from ovirtmananer and ovirt node from running VM but I didnt find any error. Where can I find out more ? Yes, But I thought that cockpit should prevent creation of the gluster volume 'engine' as it is too small. @Dev Do we have such control ? HE deployment failing

Hey! I'm trying to deploy a 3 node cluster with gluster storage. After the gluster deployment is completed successfully, the creation of storage domain fails during HE deployment giving the error: [ ERROR ] fatal: [localhost]: FAILED! => {"changed": false, "msg": "Error: the target storage domain contains only 46.0GiB of available space while a minimum of 61.0GiB is required If you wish to use the current target storage domain by extending it, make sure it contains nothing before adding it."} I have tried to increase the disk size(provided in storage tab) to 90GiB. But the deployment still fails. A 50GiB storage domain is created by default even if some other size is provided. Has anyone faced a similar issue? Regards Parth Dhanjal

Everything ended well - despite the warning 'do not shutdown' I powered off and powered on the VM. This action allowed me to trigger a snapshot deletion (again) and it completed successfully. Removing the disk of interest also completed successfully. So, I got a happy ending. I think I'm getting closer. It seems the snapshot of the VM did not get deleted and that might be the problem. Can someone give me a hint how to remove the snapshot as I get an error: Cannot remove Snapshot. The following disks are in ILLEGAL status: uyuni-OS-Disk1 - please remove them and try again. Yet, removal of the disk cannot happen as I got: Cannot detach Virtual Disk. The disk is already configured in a snapshot. In order to detach it, remove the disk's snapshot. This seems like 'Catch 22' . Hello All, I have changed my system layout and the old disk is removed (echo 1 > /sys/block/sdX/device/delete) from OS, but UI complains when I try to remove with the following error: Error while executing action: Cannot remove Virtual Disk. At least one of the VMs is not down. Is it a limitation of oVirt ? If so, I will open an enhancement entry in bugzilla. Hello Community, I have noticed that if I want a VM snapshot with memory - I get a warning "The VM will be paused while saving the memory" .Is there a way to make snapshot without pausing the VM for the whole duration ? Experience 4.1.x -> 4.2.8 -> 4.3.4 upgrade lessons

Hi oVirters, Did a 4.1 - > 4.2.8 -> 4.3.4 upgrade in two hops. Here is my experience, hope it can save you some pain. Gotchas 1. For shutdown VMs, their disks were deactivated (though still attached) 2. For shutdown VMs, their NICs were "Up" but "Unplugged" 3. VM Custom Compatibility Version is hard to find. (If it is too old say 3.6, 4.1) they won't start up. The location is: VM -> Edit -> System -> Advanced Parameters (click this) "Advanced Parameters" is an expandable widget that is quite small when collapsed. When it is expanded then you will see "Custom Compatibility Version" 4. Storage Domain migration to V5: I use a NFS storoage domain. This is migrated to the "V5" format and a lot of cleanup is done. If you have stray files or images not owned by 36:36 (vdsm:kvm on my NFS server), the V5 upgrade will fail, there will be no SPM, and the Data Center will oscillate between Non-responsive and Contending. Why would there be non 36:36 uid/gid files? This is a long story, but from the older 3.x days when there was less functionality, we would sometimes directly manipulate the filesystem and/or qcow2 images using guestfish or equivalent tools which would change the owner to qemu:qemu. Forgetting to chown back to vdsm:kvm is a recipe for pain. Cheers! -- Richard Chan

Anaconda crashing on start while trying to Install oVirt Node on bare metal

Hello there! I'm trying to install an oVirt node(the most stable recent one) on a machine(just in case you didn't figure from the title :P) and anaconda just crashes \o/ I've tried to start anaconda in text mode, but the error is the exact same. Here's a screenshot of the event(text mode, although it shouldn't matter): https://i.imgur.com/ihO1xWP.jpg The only "disk" attached to the machine has no partitions, it's absolutely clean. The machine in question is a PowerEdge M520, if that matters, and I'm trying to install on top of a pair of 32GB mirrored SD cards. I installed CentOS7 on a machine that's virtually the same(they're the exact same, but aren't the same machine) and didn't have any problem. I just have no idea. Never encountered such problem. So any help would be very appreciated. Thanks ^^

I'm having a similar problem. The passtrough needs 2 steps, the first is to attach the host device to the VM, but if you don't enable the spice usb the vm fails to start. I don't know if the USB works straight from the host device or if it depends on the spice console. In my case, a device that work in a windows 10 pc doesn't work in a windows 10 vm. Maybe we both can get help in this matter. Dear oVIrt, Although it should be simple, I am failing to understand the connection between Default Gateway setting and Bad Gateway issue. On which network I need to set default gateway: Our ovirtmgmt is set not to be used by Guest VMs, only Hosted-Engine. We have tenant1 network which is assigned to VM Guest instances and it has Default Gateway, working one 😊. Hi, I want to set custom vm property as shown below testme = String1:45;String2:67; I know engine-config command to run in ovirt, but not able to construct regular expresion. Please help me. engine-config -s UserDefinedVMProperties='multiq=<regex>' I tried below regex but server throw 500 error code after setting property. regex =(^[a-z_A-Z0-9]+:[0-9]+\;)+$ And even if match entire contain as string that also fine for me. If you don't have a raid controller with battery-backed cache - disable the raid in bios. Fake raids are just like software raid, use the cpu for calculations and could be a potential problem if the Motherboard dies. Software raid (controlled by mdadm) and lvm raid (sane driver but controlled from lvm) can easily be recovered on any type of linux (as long as it is not too old ofc) and do not have the minuses of the fake raid. I think the simplest way is to get a new LUN and migrate the VM disks to it. Once the 2 old LUNs are free - you can release them both. Spice console very poor performance for Windows 10 vm

Hello Everyone, Maybe I am something wrong, but spice console seem to be very laggy and slow for windows 10 vms. I have tried both qxl and qxl-dod drivers, but no luck so far... As a notice, the Win 2012R2 vm console is running fine, the problem seems to only affect Windows 10. Any ideas, what should I do to sort this out ? Thank you very much ! Using a synology as an nfs storage

Hello, I'm setting up a 3 node cluster with the ovirtnode iso and a seperate server with the engine on and a synology for nfs storage. I have done my configuration and I'm able to mount the share manually on the node with a command. Also on the server with the engine on I can mount it manually. But when I want to do it through the webinterface to add a data domain it say the permissions are wrong. Any idea's on how to figure this out ? Kind regards.

network performance issues

Hello. we have installed Ovirt on HPE ProLiant XL270d Gen10. The server is installed with 2 * Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6154 CPU @ 3.00GHz, 1.5T Ram, 23T Local SSD, 4 Nvidia V100 32GB GPU and 2* Mellanox Technologies MT27800 Family [ConnectX-5] The Mellanox card are 2 100Gbit DualPort each connected with a single 100Gbit port to a Mellanox 100Gbit switch which has access to a 16GByte storage server. MTU is set to 9000 for jumbo packets. Running our application on a VM created on top of the server is having lower network performance vs the host. I tried both normal ovirt network driver, using Virtual Function and PCI-passthrough moving one of the Mellanox card directly to the VM but i never get the same result as on the host. I also tried allocating the numa bush directly to the VM but it doesnt improve the results. Hi, I am new to oVirt, coming from XenServer platform, so please be patient with me. After a successful install of latest stable oVirt node (ovirt-node-ng-installer-4.3.4-2019061016.el7.iso) I am having troubles deploying hosted engine to an iscsi target over Cockpit. I have a couple of iscsi targets available on two different storage platforms (Synology DS418, Lenovo DE2000H). After retrieving iscsi Target list all LUNs get automatically "connected" by "Target list scan" and shown as used on LUNs list. I can reproduce this every single time. On storage system I can also see, that all LUNs get connected by the initial scan. As a result I an unable to continue the deployment as there are no LUNs available. Is this a normal behavior? What would you suggest me to do? Thanks.

Adding a custom fence agent on 4.3.4

Hi, I'm trying to add a custom fence agent for my test deployment on hetzner. Have written a small fence_hetzner_robot script which works ok from cli and installed on every ovirt node. Then added with engine_config in this way: # engine-config -s CustomVdsFenceType="hetzner_robot" But does not show up in fence agents list under host pm configuration. I'm missing something? thanks! Matteo PS: Also tried to set up an empty param mapping, just to test # engine-config -s CustomVdsFenceOptionMapping="hetzner_robot:" but still nothing.

SPICE and VNC native

Hi, We are running ovirt 4.3. The engine is on a bare metal machine and the hosts are running on Centos 7. When installing the engine, I set it to be the webproxy. When I create a new vm, I select both SPICE+VNC. When clicking on the console I only have the option for SPICE native, not for the HTML option. For VNC I have both options and the HTML option can be selected and works. But, this is also the only option that works. VNC Native as well as SPICE Native do not work. I have tried using both remote viewer on Mac and a VNC client on a Windows machine and neither will actually open the VM. I would really also like the SPICE HTML option to exist, but it does not. The enable SPICE proxy in the Console selection is greyed out. When I open in remoteviewer (Mac) I get Unable to connect to the graphic server. Any suggestions? Kim

We using ovirt in production environment with each virtual machine with a vGpu。but serveral days later, I find several phisical server has been crash and automatic reboot。And I also found some vGpu exist with no virtual machine using. So it makes virtual machine start fail because of lacking resource.I must enter the vgpu directory and using "echo "1" >remove" to free this vGpu。With ceaselessly stop and start, the probability of its occurrence is approximately 0.1%-1%

There were various lease errors for the servers but they came up and seemed functional. Clearly the issue is here: "Exception in startFailedAutoStartVms" in the "START_ARRAY token" but I can't find anything as of yet that says if you see this - do x,y,z. Learning oVirt so my apologies if this is a 101 question.

The graphics server is the actual host. Can you directly access SPICE/VNC port from your workstation? You can attach the usb to an oVirt node and check the module in use there. Then you can try patthrough the device and check the module in use on the VM (if it's linux) or install the driver (if Windows). No. Keep the hosts with different Brand CPU in separate clusters. For example, I have 2 gluster Bricks with AMD (default cluster) and an Intel-based arbiter (Intel cluster).
