Info about soft fencing mechanism

Hello, I would like to know in better detail how soft fencing works in 4.3. In particular, with "soft fencing" we "only" mean vdsmd restart attempt, correct? Who is responsible for issuing the command? Manager or host itself? Because in case of Manager, if the host has already lost connection, how could the manager be able to do it? Hi Alex, Did you migrate from gluster v3 to v5 ? If yes, then it could be the issue with v5.3 where permissions go wrong. High Performance VM: trouble using vNUMA and hugepages

Hi, I'm having trouble using vNUMA and hugepages at the same time: - hypervisor host hast 2 CPU and 768G RAM - hypervisor host is configured to allocate 512 1G hugepages - VM configuration * 2 virtual sockets, vCPUs are evenly pinned to 2 physical CPUs * 512G RAM * 2 vNUMA nodes that are pinned to the 2 host NUMA nodes * custom property "hugepages=1048576" - VM is the only VM on hypervisor host when I want to start the VM I'm getting the error message "The host foo did not satisfy internal filter NUMA because cannot accommodate memory of VM's pinned virtual NUMA nodes within host's physical NUMA nodes" VM start only works when VM memory is shrunk so that it fits in (host memory - allocated huge pages) I don't understand why this happens. Can someone explain to me how this is supposed to work? oVirt engine is 4.3.3 oVirt host is 4.3.4 thanks matthias

Hi Adrian, You have several options: A) If you have space on another gluster volume (or volumes) or on NFS-based storage, you can migrate all VMs live . Once you do it, the simple way will be to stop and remove the storage domain (from UI) and gluster volume that correspond to the problematic brick. Once gone, you can remove the entry in oVirt for the old host and add the newly built one.Then you can recreate your volume and migrate the data back. B) If you don't have space you have to use a more riskier approach (usually it shouldn't be risky, but I had bad experience in gluster v3): - New server has same IP and hostname: Use command line and run the 'gluster volume reset-brick VOLNAME HOSTNAME:BRICKPATH HOSTNAME:BRICKPATH commit' Replace VOLNAME with your volume name. A more practical example would be: 'gluster volume reset-brick data ovirt3:/gluster_bricks/data/brick ovirt3:/gluster_ ricks/data/brick commit' If it refuses, then you have to cleanup '/gluster_bricks/data' (which should be empty). Also check if the new peer has been probed via 'gluster peer status'.Check the firewall is allowing gluster communication (you can compare it to the firewalls on another gluster host). The automatic healing will kick in 10 minutes (if it succeeds) and will stress the other 2 replicas, so pick your time properly. Note: I'm not recommending you to use the 'force' option in the previous command ... for now :) - The new server has a different IP/hostname: Instead of 'reset-brick' you can use 'replace-brick': It should be like this: gluster volume replace-brick data old-server:/path/to/brick new-server:/new/path/to/brick commit force In both cases check the status via: gluster volume info VOLNAME If your cluster is in production , I really recommend you the first option as it is less risky and the chance for unplanned downtime will be minimal. The 'reset-brick' in your previous e-mail shows that one of the servers is not connected. Check peer status on all servers, if they are less than they should check for network and/or firewall issues. On the new node check if glusterd is enabled and running. In order to debug - you should provide more info like 'gluster volume info' and the peer status from each node. oVirt engine/engine-setup with other port than default HTTPS 443 possible?

Hello, in a home lab with only one puplic IPv4-Adress is the Port 443 a very precious one. The installation of oVirt 4.3 on a single node/host with bare metal installed CentOS works well. (oVirt Cockpit and local installed engine added after installation of Centos 7.6). But it is more difficult to change the port from 443 to maybe 4443 the save the port 443. The change in: - /etc/httpd/conf/conf.d/ssl.conf - /var/lib/ovirt-engine/jboss_runtime/config/ovirt-engine.xml and - disable selinux - add 4443 to public with firewall-cmd It does not work... now I see is more difficult than I think before... A port redirection at the edge route from <public-IPv4>:4443 to <private-IPv4>:443 does also not work, because the links points all to the standard https adress without a port number. Is there a way to change the default port 443 of oVirt engine to a other port? Many Thanks in advance!

RFE: HostedEngine to use boom by default

Hello All, I have seen a lot of cases where the HostedEngine gets corrupted/broken and beyond repair. I think that BOOM is a good option for our HostedEngine appliances due to the fact that it supports booting from LVM snapshots and thus being able to easily recover after upgrades or other outstanding situations. Sadly, BOOM has 1 drawback - that everything should be under a single snapshot - thus no separation of /var /log or /audit. Do you think that changing the appliance layout is worth it ? Note: I might have an unsupported layout that could cause my confusion.Is your layout a single root LV ? Best Regards,Strahil Nikolov

vNUMA question

Hi, when I want to use vNUMA for VMs is it necessary that the number of VM virtual sockets corresponds to the number of vNUMA nodes? concrete example: hypervisor host has 2 physical cpus VM has 2 vNUMA nodes and uses CPU pinning which distributes the VCPUs equally over both physical CPUs is it necessary for the VM to have 2 virtual sockets or is it ok for virtual socket count to be powers of 2 (eg. 16)? thanks matthias

VM Disk Performance metrics?

Is there any way to get ovirt disk performance metrics into the web interface? It would be nice to see some type of IOPs data, so we can see which VMs are hitting our data stores the most. It seems you can run virt-top on a host to get some of these metrics, but it would be nice to get some sort of data in the gui. Thanks!

Can't bring upgraded to 4.3 host back to cluster

Hello, May I ask you for and advise? I'm running a small oVirt cluster and couple of months ago I decided to do an upgrade from oVirt 4.2.8 to 4.3 and having an issues since that time. I can only guess what I did wrong - probably one of the problems that I haven't switched the cluster from iptables to firewalld. But this is just my guess. The problem is that I have upgraded the engine and one host, and then I done an upgrade of second host I can't bring it to active state. Looks like VDSM can't detect the network and fails to start. I even tried to reinstall the hosts from UI (I have seen that the packages being installed) but again, VDSM doesn't startup at the end and reinstallation fails. Hi Has anyone experiencing the following issue with Storage Domain - Failed to activate Storage Domain cLUN-R940-DC2-dstore01 -- VDSM command ActivateStorageDomainVDS failed: Storage domain does not exist: (u'1b0ef853-fd71-45ea-8165-cc6047a267bc',) Currently, the storge Domain is Inactive and strangely, the VMs are running as normal. We can't manage or extend the volume size of this storage domain. Anybody have had to replace a failed host from a 3, 6, or 9 node hyperconverged setup with gluster storage? One of my hosts is completely dead, I need to do a fresh install using ovirt node iso, can anybody point me to the proper steps? thanks,

Hi Adrian, Did you fix the issue with the gluster and the missing brick? If yes, try to set the 'old' host in maintenance and then forcefully remove it from oVirt. If it succeeds (and it should), then you can add the server back and then check what happens. OVirt + Gluster is called 'Hyperconverged' setup and it supports only replica3 or a 'replica3 arbiter1' volumes. Vmware VSAN is another popular Hyperconverged Setup but requires a lot of licenses. The CPU and Disk resources are plenty on virtualization Hosts and this setup allows you to save space by removal of the iSCSI/NFS/SAN dedicated system. The setup is quite popular and it works quite well, but requires a 10G network (as load balancing smaller NICs is very hard ) - if performance is required, while even a 1 gbit/s NIC is possible to be used. Note: 1gbit/s will provide no more than 87 MB/s on gluster level for all your VMs , which is very poor. If you have 4 hosts -> one of them will not be in the gluster setup, or you will have 2 separate gluster volumes like this: oVirt1- Replica for volume A oVirt2- Replica for volume A , arbiter for volume B oVirt3 - Replica for volume B,arbiter for volume A oVirt4 - Replica for volume B Then you add them as hosts in your oVirt setup. Hi, everybody. When I was looking at the administrator's manual, it prompted Clusters run virtual machines or Red Hat Gluster Storage Servers. These two purposes are mad exclusive: Virtualization and storage hosts together. When I configured the cluster, I said that the glusterfs and virt I saw were alternatives to the two checkboxes. I would like to ask what happens when glusterfs and virt are in the same cluster? How can I use hosted engine when I have four nodes? Thank you very much for your reply.

oVirt hosted engine lost superblocks, need to recover data - 4.1

I have been working on this a few days now, though no solution seems to have emerged. I have an oVirt 4.1 hosted engine that is now failing to boot except into emergency mode. When xfs_repair is run, it gives an error saying that the primary and secondary superblocks are bad. Earlier this week, I was trying to install engine-backup because there were problems with the root partition being full. I was working on resolving dependencies for engine-backup when the hosted engine became unresponsive with an output about gov0 (which I believe is related to gluster), and I have not been able to boot it correctly since then. I am able to mount /var, and I have access to it, but that is not true for the root partition. What are some suggestions for recovering the data on the root partition? Thanks!

high number of interface RX errors on ovirtmgmt network

I have a three node HCI setup on Dell R720s running the latest stable version of 4.3.3 Each hosts has a 1gig link and a 10gig link. The 1gig is used for ovirt management network and 10gig link is used for backend glusterFS traffic. I haven't noticed before but after installing ovirt metrics store I'm seeing that gig interface used for ovirtmgmt on all three hosts are showing high RX error rates. The 10gig interfaces for glusterFS on all three hosts appear to be fine. The 1gig ethernet controllers are: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries NetXtreme II BCM57800 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10) Other physical servers on the same network/switches outside of oVirt have zero RX errors. Hosted Engine Abruptly Stopped Responding - Unexpected Shutdown

Hello, I came upon a problem the previous month that I figured it would be good to discuss here. I'm sorry I didn't post here earlier but time slipped me. I have set up a glustered, hyperconverged oVirt environment for experimental use as a means to see its behaviour and get used to its management and performance before setting it up as a production environment for use in our organization. The environment is up and running since 2018 October. The three nodes are HP ProLiant DL380 G7 and have the following characteristics: Mem: 22GB CPU: 2x Hexa Core - Intel Xeon Hexa Core E56xx HDD: 5x 300GB Network: BCM5709C with dual-port Gigabit OS: Linux RedHat 7.5.1804(Core 3.10.0-862.3.2.el7.x86_64 x86_64) - Ovirt Node 4.2.3.1 As I was working on the environment, the engine stopped working. Not long before the time the HE stopped, I was in the web interface managing my VMs, when the browser froze and the HE was also not responding to ICMP requests. The first thing I did was to connect via ssh to all nodes and run the command #hosted-engine --vm-status which showed that the HE was down in nodes 1 and 2 and up on the 3rd node. After executing #virsh -r list the VM list that was shown contained two of the VMs I had previously created and were up; the HE was nowhere. I tried to restart the HE with the #hosted-engine --vm-start but it didn't work. I then put all nodes in maintenance mode with the command #hosted-engine --set-maintenance --mode=global (I guess I should have done that earlier) and re-run #hosted-engine --vm-start that had the same result as it previously did. After checking the mails the system sent to the root user, I saw there were several mails on the 3rd node (where the HE had been), informing of the HE's state. The messages were changing between EngineDown-EngineStart, EngineStart-EngineStarting, EngineStarting-EngineMaybeAway, EngineMaybeAway-EngineUnexpectedlyDown, EngineUnexpectedlyDown-EngineDown, EngineDown-EngineStart and so forth. Killed process 5422 (qemu-kvm) total-vm:17526548kB, anon-rss:9310396kB, file-rss:2336kB, shmem-rss:12kB" which after that the ovirtmgmt started not responding. I tried to restart the vhostd by executing #/etc/rc.d/init.d/vhostmd start but it didn't work. Finally, I decided to run the HE restart command on the other nodes as well (I'd figured that since the HE was last running on the node #3, that's where I should try to restart it). So, I run #hosted-engine --vm-start and the output was "Command VM.getStats with args {'vmID':'...<το ID της HE>....'} failed: (code=1,message=Virtual machine does not exist: {'vmID':'...<το ID της HE>....'})" And then I run the command again and the output was "VM exists and its status is Powering Up." After that I executed #virsh -r list and the output was the following: Id Name State ---------------------------------------------------- 2 HostedEngine running After the HE's restart two mails came that stated: ReinitializeFSMEngineStarting and EngineStarting-EngineUp After that and after checking that we had access to the web interface again, we executed hosted-engine --set-maintenance --mode=none to get out of the maintenance mode. The thing is, I still am not 1000% sure what the problem was that led to the shutdown of the hosted engine and I think that maybe some of the steps I took were not needed. I believe it was because the process qemu-kvm was killed after there was not enough memory for it but is this the real cause? I wasn't doing anything unusual before the shutdown to believe it was because of the new VM that was still in shutdown mode or anything of the sort. Also, I believe it may be because of memory shortage because I hadn't executed the #sync ; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches command for a couple of weeks. What are your thoughts on this? Could you point me to where to search for more information on the topic or tell me what is the right process to follow when something like this happens? Also, I have set up a few VMs but only three are Up and they have no users yet, even so the buffers fill almost to the brim when the usage is almost non-existant. If you have an environment that has some users or you use the VMs as virtual servers of some sort, what is the consumption of the memory? What's the optimal size for the memory? Hi ! Followup to my previous post. Creating template from snapshot in 4.2.8 also suffers from the same bug - allocation policy selected to thin provision even if I select RAW from the popup menu. Hi ! Looks like there is some strange glitch creating new VM from template on oVirt 4.2.8.2. Basically I’m need to convert disk image from QCOW2 thin allocated to raw format in an existing VM. These are steps performed: 1) Create snapshot of an existing VM. 2) Make template from snapshot. 3) Create new VM using template, in Resource Allocation -> Storage Allocation -> Clone -> Format -> Raw. Unfortunately, newly created VM still have QCOW2 thin allocated disk. Did this operation twice to be sure, and both times things went wrong. What is done wrong, and how to solve this problem? Hi everyone, I'm evaluating some datacenter backup solution, and finally I'm going to give a chance to storware vprotect for my ovirt DC (2 clusters, 3+32 hypervisors, about 100+ VMs). How many of you are using it? Any suggestion? Any caveat not immediately visible? Hints? Drawbacks? For example I have some problem mounting backup of some VM (pfsense firewalls), based on UFS filesystem. And I couldn't browse mounted backup from WebUI (NFS problems between server and node). I know these are problems I can easily get around, but I'm more concerned about issue I can't see right now. TIA, gc

VM import doesn't see VMs on storage

Hi, I have 2 independent oVirt datacenters. Need to move some of the VMs from DC1 to DC2. So far the strategy was as simple as this - 1) connect new storage domain (NFS) to DC1 2) move VM disks to that storage 3) shut down VMs 4) disconnect storage from DC1 5) import same storage into DC2 6) import VMs from that storage and optionally move VM disks to storage local to DC2. Works fine for a dozen VMs until last Friday when I tried to import another 13 VMs into DC2 and VM import shows only 6. I can see disks in Disk import tab, but not VMs. I guess this is related to the fact that some of the VMs to be moved are based on a template that is still on DC1. But how do I move these VMs then? I can't move the template as 1) I still need it in DC1 2) it doesn't have any disks attached, so I can't really do the same steps to move it. Any ideas are very welcome here. Hello All, I would like to ask how many of you use VDO before asking the oVirt Devs to assess a feature in oVirt for monitoring the size of the VDOs on hyperconverged systems. I just get a blank output from that command. Uploading disk images (oVirt 4.3.3.1)

Hi, I have an issue while trying to upload disk images thru the Web UI. "Connection to ovirt-imageio-proxy service has failed. Make sure the service is installed, configured, and ovirt-engine certificate is registered as a valid CA in the browser." My ovirt engine's fqdn is ovirt-engine.mydomain.com however due to network restrictions I had to set rules in order to reach our ovirt-engine ovirt-engine.mydomain.com = 192.168.0.45 For example ovirt-engine.mydomain.otherstuff.com - 192.168.10.109:80, 192.168.10.109:443, 192.168.0.45:80 So as you can see I need to hit the ovirt-engine using ovirt-engine.mydomain.otherstuff.com which I am able to by modifyting the 11-setup-sso.conf file and adding "SSO_ENGINE_URL="https://ovirt-engine.mydomain.otherstuff.com:443/ovirt-engine/" I am able to upload disk images when using http://ovirt-engine.mydomain.com but not able to http://ovirt-engine.mydomain.otherstuff.com I know it might be related to the certificates but I need to be able to upload disk images using both URLs. any ideas?
