Migrating to Gluster HCI - Export/Import

I'm upgrading from 2 host w/ attached storage to 3-host HCI w/Gluster. What is the procedure for this? Is export domain depreciated? 1. Shut down and export all VMs - Do I use export domain? Or is the "Backup Domain" the newer method? 2. Detach domains from cluster and wipe hosts 3. Build HCI cluster, setup gluster bricks/vols 4. Attach backup domain and import VMs Thanks! Vincent

Storage advice

I have a small oVirt cluster running but I have been having problems with the storage and would like to completely start again with the storage infrastructure. Currently for storage I have a single server running windows storage server serving oVirt via iSCSI. I also have a smaller storage server which is currently not used. The oVirt cluster is not running a production environment but ideally I do not want to have to power it all off to patch the storage servers and oVirt cluster. 1x storage server, raid 10 24TB usable, 2x 10Gb ethernet 1x storage server, raid 10 4TB usable, 4x 1Gb ethernet 8x oVirt hosts, 1x10Gb ethernet on each 1x 24port 10Gb switch What would be the best way to utilise the storage servers? I was thinking about sticking CentOS on both servers and running Gluster with a 4TB replicated volume across both servers for the hosted engine and other critical VMs and then a 20TB non-replicated Gluster volume running on just the larger storage server for non critical VMs. I have another spare server which i could potentially use as a arbiter node. Would this work or would I have huge problems as the hardware performance of each storage server is so different? Any advice appreciated.

Hello My names ryan and im studying for my rhcsa and rhce also a linux enthusiast, im setting up my first ovirt server and have my ovirt engine setup aswell as my data center and host, ive come to the point where i need to configure storage. Ovirt is installed on a 256GB nvme ssd with my iso and master data domain pointed to the drive. I have 2 WD 2TB hard drives available that havent been allocated yet, id like them to be combined with lvm and have a single share exported via nfs that all vm's (3 vm's) in total can access for data storage Is this possible ? removing FC storage

How to remove FC storage domain correctly? I turned off the FC storage domain in the cluster (maintenance -> detach -> remove), but the volume group still remained on the hosts and I would have to remove them manually and need to clear a multipath links too, before I turn off the LUN on the FC storage. How will the cluster behave if there are differences in the volume groups on the hosts? Because I can’t simultaneously delete partitions and multipath links on all hosts, and this process will occur sequentially on each host.

Cannot delete a stuck task

Hi, The task "Adding disk" is stuck at "creating volume". I tried to delete the task with "taskcleaner.sh", at CLI with list / remove jobs, deleted lastly the VM and restartet the engine-vm. But its still in the task list. Any idea to remove this job?

New oVirt deployment suggestions

Hello! I'm almost ready to start with a new oVirt deplyment. I will use CentOS 7, self hosting engine and glusert storage. I have 3 phisical host. Each host has four NIC. My first idea is: - configure bond betwheen NICs - configure a VLAN interface for management network (and local lan) - configure a VLAN interface for gluster network - configure gluster for the hosted engine - start "hosted-engine --deploy" process is this enough? do I need a phisical dedicated NIC for management network? VM Portal noVNC Console invocation

When I use the VM Portal and invoke a console I'm not sure how i can leverage the html5 noVNC version of this. I can only get the .vv file and would like to use a web based console, or rather provide them to users of an engine. TIA Brian

Hello Everybody, I only wanted to ask you, if the ovirt hosts does need the cockpit-networkmanager? master domain wont activate

I was attempting to migrate from nfs to iscsi storage domains. I have reached a state where I can no longer activate the old master storage domain, and thus no others will activate either. I'm ready to give up on the installation and just move to an HCI deployment instead. Wipe all the hosts clean and start again. My plan was to create and use an export domain, then wipe the nodes and set them up HCI where I could re-import. But without being able to activate a master domain, I can't create the export domain. Bad libvirt-spice certificate - regenerate?

I have an oVirt 4.1 cluster that was initially installed with 3.5 in 2014. The SSL certificates on the physical hosts in /etc/pki/vdsm/libvirt-spice have a problem - the "not before" date is invalid (it doesn't include a time zone), and so I can't connect to VM consoles from a client with OpenSSL 1.1.0i (up to date Fedora 27). How can I regenerate these certificates? Also, I noticed they expire next year - is that expiration handled automatically? -- Chris Adams <cma(a)cmadams.net>

Error when running hosted-engine deploy on system with bond of bonds

Hi, I'm trying to set up ovirt using the hosted-engine --deploy command on CentOS7, but am encountering an error. I am running a slightly unusual network configuration. I have two fairly basic non stacked gigabit switches with port channels connecting the two switches together. I have a lacp bond from the host consisting of 4 ports to each switch (bond1 and bond2). I have then created an active-backup bond (bond0) using the two lacp bonds as slaves in the hope to create ha at the switch layer using my basic switches. There is then a VLAN (101) on bond0. This network configuration runs fine on the host, however, when run, after a short while, the hosted-engine --deploy command outputs the following error: ... iso domain don't list available images

Hello, I detached an existing iso domain from an other ovirt instance and attached it to on a fresh 4.2 install, but no images are available. Unable to mount CephFS as POSIX Compliant FS

I have a ceph filesystem that I can manually mount on my ovirt host. [root@ovirt121 ~]# mount -t ceph ceph01:/ /mnt -o name=admin,secret=<secret removed for security> [root@ovirt121 ~]# touch /mnt/test works great! Then I umount that filesystem and attempt to add storage domain in ovirt engine. Settings: Storage type: POSIX compliant FS Host to use: ovirt121 name: cephdata Path: ceph01:/ vfs type: ceph mount options: name=admin,secret=<secret removed for security> In the oVirt web UI I get a "General Exception" error. no space left to upgrade hosted-engine

I've deployed and hosted-engine with the hosted-engine provided appliance. When runing hosted-engine --upgrade-appliance on one host, it tells me "If your engine VM is already based on el7 you can also simply upgrade the engine there." ODL and Openstack issue

I am running one controller and one compute node. Controller node is running both ODL and OpenStack. I created tenants, underthem i created networks and launched instances on them. All is see on ODL web GUI is 3 swithces, and I guess those are br-int and br-ex of controller and br-int of compute and the links are missing too. Is there anyway where I can see my whole OpenStack https://goo.gl/6CgufL topology on ODL GUI with the links?

lost connection to hosted engine

Hi, Just run into the issue during cluster upgrade from 4.24 to 4.2.6.1. I'm running small cluster with 2 hosts and gluster storage. Once I upgraded one of the hosts to 4.2.6.1 something went wrong (looks like it tried to start HE instance) and I can't connect to hosted-engine any longer. As I can see HostedEngine is still running on the second host (and another yet 7 VM's) , but I can't stop it. ovirt-ha-agent and ovirt-ha-broker are failing to start. hosted-engine --vm-status gives nothing but error message "The hosted engine configuration has not been retrieved from shared storage. Please ensure that ovirt-ha-agent is running and the storage server is reachable." ps -ef shows plenty of vdsm processes in defunc state thats probably the reason why agent and brocker can't start. Just wondering that is the good way to start problem resolution here to minimize downtime for running VM's? Restart vdsm and try again restarting agent and broker or just reboot the whole host? ISCSI domain won't attach

I setup an iscsi domain in hopes of moving away from NFS. I created a new logical network for this on a storage vlan. both hosts and storage server grabbed a good IP on this vlan. ISCSI Domain connected ok and I started moving disks over from the NFS domain. Transfers were completing so I let it do its thing. This morning, after the transfers completed, three things occurred in quick succession: 1. Affinity Rules Enforcement Manager started. 2. Invalid status on Data Center. Setting status to Non Responsive. 3. Storage Pool Manager runs on Host brian.xxx.net (Address: brian.xxx.net) Data Center. 4. Storage Domain domiscsi was deactivated by system because it's not visible by any of the hosts. Try to attach it again and it fails. clean up a fc lun to reuse it

Hi all, I tried to install the Hosted-Engine on a FC lun, and the first time, it failed at the end because of a sanlock issue. So I fixed it and the re-deoployed from scratch until this new issue [ ERROR ] Error: Fault reason is "Operation Failed". Fault detail is "[Physical device initialization failed. Please check that the device is empty and accessible by the host.]". HTTP response code is 400. Before, I found that the lun [2] was used: [ INFO ] ok: [localhost] The following luns have been found on the requested target: [1] 36006016039a142001792ac5b1b9e513a 1024GiB DGC VRAID status: free, paths: 8 active [2] 36006016039a142006755b25b7505d26b 100GiB DGC VRAID status: used, paths: 8 active So it was the good explanation for the failure. Following the admin guide, I cleaned up the lun using |# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mapper/||36006016039a142006755b25b7505d26b bs=1M count=200 oflag=direct| And re-deployed it until it complains the device was not empty despite of before. The script still reported that the status of the lun was "used" Finally, I rebooted the host, and that time the script considered the lun status as free. So there is somewhere a bit of code into the ansible script that keeps the old status of the lun before dd, until rebooting. Is there an other way to refresh the lun status after dd ? Hello, I have a windows 7 VM that is composed by a raw disk on filesystem on Fedora 28. I would like to transfer this VM to another environment, always based on same version of Fedora 28, but where the storage is configured in virt-manager as lvm based, so similar to what happens in oVirt block based storage domains. I'm trying to figure how to transfer the image. I presume I can create a new LV and then leave some bytes for the LVM header into the created LV and then make a sort of dd with offset? iSCSI multipath with Dell Compellent

Hi, I'm trying to achieve iSCSI multipathing with an Dell Compellent SC4020 array. As the Dell Array does not work as an ALUA system it displays available LUNs only on the currently active system (here is a good description that I found: https://niktips.wordpress.com/2016/05/16/dell-compellent-is-not-an-alua-sto… ). As a result I cannot add the currently non-active controller to an iSCSI-Bond (as it does not present the LUNs to oVirt) and so the path to the second controller will not be up. Hi, after I changed the network configuration of one of my hosted engine hosts in oVirt I am no longer able to run the ha-daemon on the host. Current cocpit packages are conflicting, which is preventing the host update: .... clarification needed on power management options

I would like some clarification on MinFreeMemoryForUnderUtilized and MaxFreeMemoryForOverUtilized. How does that work? it seems the names should be oposite ? so if I have hosts with 64GB ram and I want to consider them over utilized at 48GB used and under utilized at 12GB used, should I set MinFreeMemoryForUnderUtilized=12GB MaxFreeMemoryForOverUtilized=48GB ? is this correct ? Also If ihave hyperconverged setup with 3 hosts having a replica3 storage for the engine and I disable policy management on these hosts, will these hosts be part of the overall utilization regardless if the engine can shut them down ?

liveliness check fails on one host

I have an ovirt installation (4.2.6), and I have come accross this issue: Hosted engine can migrate to a certain host say host5. Admin portal is working fine, everything is working fine AFAIK but hosted-engne --vm-status shows "failed livelines check", when engine is on that host, so after a while the engine migrates somewhere else, it not a terrible problem, but it is annoying and I would like to know why is this happening, and if there is a way to fix it On every other host in the cluster this problem does not exists. firewall rules are exactly the same on hosts (in fact they are copied) . Any places to look at? Thank you

Hi All, I have a ovirt 4.1.9 self hosted setup with 3 servers. As storage gluster is used in replica 3. I have at a cluster the following error, and this seems to have risen following a routine update (software packages) of the servers. When trying to delete a snapshot of a VM I get at GUI: General command validation failure. Engine logs the attached. Any help is appreciated. Thanx, Alex

My current usage of oVirt requires me to switch the boot priorities for virtual machines from hard disk to pxe fairly often. It would be nice to see an option added in that would set a one-off pxe boot for virtual machines, reverting back to the original boot priorities after restart. This would save some time when dealing with multiple machines, by eliminating the need to switch them to pxe and then back to their previous boot options in the middle of their boot process.

Networking in oVirt

Hi all, Today I have installed oVirt 4.2 on a single machine (self hosted engine). My server has 6 physical adapters, but only 1 has an active uplink (enp2s0f0). The server is directly connected to the internet. The installation of oVirt created the following interfaces: - br-int - ovirtmgmt [IP configured: inet 85.17.x.x] - virbr0 [IP configured: inet 192.168.122.1] - virbr0-nic - vnet0 The hosted-engine is attached to ovirtmgmt and got IP 192.168.122.76 assigned. The hosted-engine does have access to the internet. The logical network ovirtmgmt is assigned to the physical interface enp2s0f0 when I check this via the oVirt webgui. I have 2 questions. Q1: I would like to achieve the following: - Create a new network, call it vm_network. - Create VM's and attach them to the vm_network. - These VM's should able to access the internet. Is this possible, if so, how do I achieve this? Q2: When my first question is answered and I have VM's running, some of the VM's I would like to give an external/public IP address. Hi all, sorry for being late to such an interesting thread. I discussed almost this same issue (properly and programmatically shutting down a complete oVirt environment in a way that also guarantees a clean and easy power up later) privately with some friends some time ago. Please note that the issue has been already discussed on the mailing list before (we had started from those hints):http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2017-August/083667.html I will translate here from Italian our description of the scenario, hoping to add something to the discussion (maybe simply as another use case): Setup: * We are talking about an hyperconverged oVirt+GlusterFS (HE-HC) setup (let's say 1 or 3 nodes, but more should work the same) * We are talking about abusing the "hyperconverged" term above (so CTDB/Samba/Gluster-NFS/Gluster- block are also running, directly on the nodes) ;-) Business case: * Let's say that we are in a small business setup and we do not have the luxury of diesel-powered generators guaranteeing no black-outs * Let's say that we have (intelligent) UPSs with limited battery, so that we must make sure that a clean global power down gets initiated as soon as the UPSs signal that a certain low threshold has been passed (threshold to be carefully defined in order to give enough time for a clean shutdown) * Let's say that those UPSs may be: * 1 UPS powering everything (smells single-point-of-failure, but could be) * 2 UPSs with all physical equipment having redundant (2) power cords * 3 or more UPSs somehow variously connected * Let's say the the UPSs may be network-monitored (SNMP on the ovirtmgmt network) or directly attached to the nodes (USB/serial) General strategy leading to shutdown decision: * We want to centralize UPS management and use something like NUT[1] running on the Engine vm * Network controlled UPSs will be directly controlled by NUT running on the Engine vm, while directly attached UPSs (USB/serial) will be controlled by NUT running on the nodes they are attached to, but only in a "proxy" mode (relaying actual control/logic to the NUT service running on the Engine vm) * A proper logic will be devised (knowing the capacity of each UPS, the load it sustains and what actually means to power down those connected equipment in view of quorum maintenance) in order to decide whether a partial power down or a complete global power down are needed, in case only a subset of UPSs should experience a low-battery event (obviously a complete low-battery on all UPSs means global power down) Detailed strategy of shutdown implementation: * A partial power down (only some nodes) means: * Those nodes will be put in local maintenance (vms get automatically migrated on other nodes or cleanly shut down if migration is impossible because of constraints or limited resources; shutdown of vms should respect proper order, using tags, dependency rules, HA status or other hints) but without stopping GlusterFS services (since there are further services depending on those, see below) * Services running on those nodes get cleanly stopped: * Proper stopping of oVirt HA Agent and Broker services on those nodes * Proper stopping of CTDB (brings down Samba too) and Gluster-block (NFS-Ganesha too, if used instead of Gluster-NFS) services on those nodes * Clean unmounting of all still-mounted GlusterFS volumes on those nodes * Clean OS poweroff of those nodes * A global power down of everything means: * All guest vms (except the Engine) get cleanly shut down (by means of oVirt guest agent), possibly in a proper dependency order (using tags, dependency rules, HA status or other hints) * All storage domains (except the Engine one) are put in maintenance * Global oVirt maintenance is activated (no more HA actions to guarantee that the Engine is up) * Clean OS poweroff of the Engine vm * Proper stopping of oVirt HA Agent and Broker services on all nodes * Proper stopping of CTDB (brings down Samba too) and Gluster- block (NFS-Ganesha too, if used instead of Gluster-NFS) services on all nodes * Clean unmounting of all still-mounted GlusterFS volumes on all nodes * Clean stop of all GlusterFS volumes (issued from a single, chosen node) * Clean OS poweroff of all nodes Sorry for the lenghty email :-) Many thanks. VNC Console on iOS device using Shotcuts

Hi, I am currently experimenting with ability to connect VM console from iPad. I have developed a workflow in Shorcuts app (formerly Workflow). https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/183ccea2fcca472c8e05b0eb766a8b39 You have to install VNC viewer that is able to open vnc:// url on your device. I am using VNC Viewer - Remote Desktop by RealVNC (https://itunes.apple.com/cz/app/vnc-viewer-remote-desktop/id352019548?mt=8) Workflow is far from perfect so if you have any ideas to improve this workflow I am surely listening.

Enabling Gluster Service

I just enabled the Gluster service in an existing oVirt 7.2.7-1 cluster via the Web-UI which put all hosts into non-operational status. Lots of events being created: Could not find gluster uuid of server host001.local on Cluster testlab. Could not find gluster uuid of server host002.local on Cluster testlab. Could not find gluster uuid of server host003.local on Cluster testlab. and a bunch of failed vm migrations Is it possible to add glusterfs after ovirt has been installed and configured?

Host restarting for unknown reasons

I have a dual host, self hosted engine, cluster/datacenter. I call these Node1 and Node2. They are running CentOS 7 and I have been running the updates regular by putting each host into maintenance mode and installing the update via the web gui. Node1 is restarting at odd times, causing VMs on that node to start up on Node2 (which is by design). However the restarts are becoming more frequent and I am having a hard time figuring out what is causing it. Below is a snippet from the /var/log/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/agent.log on Node1. My current plan is to simply rebuild Node1 by re-installing CentOS 7, and using the cluster tools to import it.
